Chapter 2: The Original File
“The person who requested the altered document was…”
The doctor stopped.
For one terrible second, nobody in the room moved.
I could hear Noah breathing softly against my chest.
That tiny sound was the only thing keeping me from falling apart.
The doctor looked down at the envelope in her hands.
Then she looked directly at Linda.
“Linda Carter.””
The silence afterward felt heavier than any accusation.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“What?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
The doctor walked toward the table and placed the sealed envelope beside the fake DNA report.
“I’m Dr. Emily Parker. I was the physician overseeing the genetic testing department at St.
Mary’s Medical Center. This envelope contains the original documentation from Noah’s test.””
Linda shook her head immediately.
“No. That’s not possible.””
Dr. Parker looked at her calmly.
“Why wouldn’t it be possible?””
Linda opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the first time I saw fear on her face.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
And somehow, that scared me more.
Daniel stood up slowly.
“Mom, what is she talking about?””
Linda looked at her son.
“Daniel, don’t listen to this. This woman doesn’t know what she’s saying.””
Dr. Parker placed her hand on the envelope.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
She opened it carefully.
“I received a request three weeks ago asking for a duplicate copy of the DNA report. The request was submitted using your family’s information.””
She looked at Linda.
“But the request was modified after it entered our system.””
Mr. Hayes leaned forward.
“Modified how?””
Dr. Parker pulled out several pages.
“The original result was changed. The genetic match between Daniel Carter and Noah Carter was removed and replaced with a false conclusion.””
My fingers tightened around my son.
A wave of anger moved through me.
Not because I was surprised.
Because someone had actually planned this.
Someone had sat down and decided that destroying my family was worth the effort.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
His voice cracked.
“Did you do this?””
Linda stared at him.
For a moment, I thought she would deny everything.
I thought she would create another story.
Another lie.
Instead, she looked at me.
And that look told me everything.
“You don’t understand what happened,” Linda said.
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those were the words she chose.
“You tried to take my baby from me.””
Linda’s expression hardened.
“I tried to protect my son.””
“From what?”” I asked.
She pointed toward Daniel.
“From making the biggest mistake of his life.””
Daniel stepped back.
“What mistake?””
Linda looked at him with disappointment.
“You married someone who was never right for this family.””
My stomach turned.
There it was.
The truth she had hidden behind polite smiles and fake concern.
It was never about Noah.
It was never about the DNA.
It was about me.
“I knew it,” I whispered.
Linda looked at me.
“You always acted like you belonged here.””
My eyes burned.
“I am his wife.””
She shook her head.
“You changed Daniel.””
“No,” I said.
My voice became stronger.
“You just didn’t like that you couldn’t control him anymore.””
Daniel looked between us.
His face was filled with confusion.
“Mom, stop.””
Linda turned toward him.
“I did this because I love you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You forged a DNA report.””
“I was trying to show you the truth.””
“No,” he said.
His voice was louder now.
“You were trying to create your own truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Linda seemed shocked by his response.
I had spent weeks wondering if Daniel would believe me.
If he would choose me.
But standing there, watching him finally question his mother, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time.
Hope.
Then Linda reached into her purse.
And pulled out her phone.
“I have proof too.””
My heart sank.
Of course she did.
People like Linda never walked into a fight without another weapon.
She unlocked her phone and placed it on the table.
“There were messages.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Messages from who?””
Linda looked at me.
“From Ava.””
My body went cold.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward everyone.
There were screenshots.
Text messages.
Conversations that appeared to show me admitting that I had something to hide.
Mr. Hayes picked up the phone.
He examined the screen.
“This needs to be verified.””
Linda smiled slightly.
“Why? Because you don’t want to believe it?””
The words hit the room like a slap.
Daniel looked at me.
For one second, I saw the same doubt again.
That hurt more than Linda’s accusation.
Because I knew that look.
The look of someone fighting between love and suspicion.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
He looked away.
“I don’t know what to think.””
Those words broke my heart all over again.
I stepped back.
Noah stirred in my arms, sensing my distress.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“It’s okay, baby.””
I kissed his forehead.
“I’m here.””
Linda watched me.
Almost like she was waiting for me to cry.
Waiting for me to collapse.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
I looked at the screenshots.
Then I looked at Dr. Parker.
“Can you prove these are fake too?””
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Dr. Parker pointed at the phone.
“Because the timestamps don’t match the hospital records.””
Linda’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
“The messages shown here were supposedly sent while Ava was inside the hospital during Noah’s delivery.””
Dr. Parker looked at me.
“But Ava’s medical records show she was in active labor and had no access to her phone during that time.””
The room became silent again.
Mr. Hayes slowly put the phone down.
“So the messages were created.””
“Yes,” Dr. Parker said.
“Someone built a false timeline.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
His shoulders dropped.
“How long?””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked at his mother.
“How long have you been doing this?””
Linda didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her expression changed.
The confidence was gone.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked down.
“I knew you were unhappy.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Unhappy?””
“Yes.””
Linda’s voice became emotional.
“You were struggling. Your marriage was falling apart. I thought you needed help.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You thought destroying my life was help?””
Linda looked at me.
“I thought you needed to leave.””
“Leave?””
She nodded.
“You and Noah.””
My blood ran cold.
“You wanted me gone.””
“Yes.””
The word landed heavily.
Daniel looked like someone had punched him.
“You wanted my son taken away from me?””
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted my son back.””
That sentence revealed everything.
She wasn’t trying to protect Daniel.
She wanted ownership of his life.
And Noah was just another way to control him.
Mr. Hayes stood up.
“This meeting is over until we complete a full investigation.””
Linda immediately panicked.
“No, wait.””
But nobody listened.
The doctor gathered the documents.
I held Noah closer.
For the first time that day, I felt like I could breathe.
The truth was finally coming out.
But as I walked toward the door, Daniel grabbed my arm gently.
“Ava.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
Because I was afraid.
Afraid that I would see the same doubt again.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
My eyes closed.
An apology was not enough.
Not after everything.
“You believed a piece of paper before you believed me.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I turned around.
“You watched me cry while someone tried to take our child away.””
His face fell.
“I was wrong.””
I wanted to forgive him.
Part of me still loved him.
But another part of me remembered sitting in that room, holding Noah, while everyone questioned whether I had the right to call myself his mother.
Before I could answer, Dr. Parker suddenly looked at the original documents again.
Her expression changed.
“Wait.””
Everyone stopped.
“What is it?”” Mr. Hayes asked.
She looked at the pages.
“There’s something else.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Dr. Parker turned the document around.
“There was another person who accessed Noah’s medical file.””
Daniel frowned.
“Another person?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Then she pointed to the access record.
A name appeared on the screen.
A name none of us expected.
And when Daniel saw it, all the color left his face.
May you like
Because the person who helped Linda change the DNA report…
Was someone much closer to our family than any of us imagined.
