Chapter 8: The Man Who Owned the Truth

Richard Hale's office occupied the thirty-second floor of a glass tower downtown.

I had been there hundreds of times.

I had shaken his hand.

Broken bread with him.

Trusted him with my company.

Trusted him with my family.

Now I stood outside his office wondering how many lies had been hiding behind that polished smile.

Lena sat in the waiting area beside Maya.

Daniel stood near the elevators.

My mother had stayed behind.

Claire had disappeared.

Richard's assistant looked up.

“Mr. Davis?””

“Yes.””

“He's expecting you.””

My pulse quickened.

“Expecting me?””

She nodded.

“He said you'd eventually come.””

I entered.

Richard stood beside the windows.

He was seventy now.

Silver hair.

Tailored suit.

Perfect posture.

He didn't turn around.

“You found Lena.””

I stopped.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew.””

He turned.

His face was tired.

“I knew eventually.””

“You were at the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“With my father.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He walked toward the desk.

“Because Thomas asked me to help.””

“Help him do what?””

“Protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

Richard sat.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

He sighed.

“You look like your father.””

“I don't care.””

“I know.””

“Tell me about Elena.””

Richard's expression changed.

“She was frightened.””

“So you knew her?””

“Yes.””

“Did she trust you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew I worked for your father.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“Thomas was investigating Patricia.””

I froze.

“My father suspected Patricia?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

“Fraud.””

“What kind?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“Adoption fraud.””

My stomach tightened.

“Patricia had been arranging illegal adoptions for years.””

Maya stood in the doorway.

Richard looked at her.

“You shouldn't be here.””

She walked inside.

“I deserve to hear it.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a thick file.

He pushed it across the desk.

“Patricia had connections inside two hospitals.””

“St. Vincent?””

“Yes.””

“She took children?””

“Sometimes.””

“Why?””

“Money.””

Lena stepped inside.

“What about me?””

Richard looked at her.

“Your case was different.””

“How?””

“You weren't supposed to be adopted.””

She froze.

“Then why was I?””

Richard's voice lowered.

“Because someone paid Patricia to make you disappear.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Your father.””

I felt as though someone had struck me.

“My father paid her?””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“Your father paid to stop her.””

“Then why did she take Lena?””

“Because Patricia discovered the second baby before Thomas did.””

“Why would she care?””

“Because Elena refused to surrender either child.””

Richard looked at Maya.

“And Elena knew someone was trying to separate them.””

Maya's face tightened.

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

“Your father.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He believed Elena would take both children and disappear.””

“Why would he think that?””

“Because Elena told him she planned to leave.””

“With Maya?””

“With both girls.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It didn't to Thomas either.””

“Then why?””

Richard's voice became quiet.

“Because Elena wasn't the person everyone thought she was.””

Maya stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at her.

“She wasn't unstable.””

“I know.””

“She wasn't dangerous.””

“I know.””

“She was hiding from someone.””

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your father.””

Silence.

I couldn't understand.

“Why would she hide from my father?””

“Because Thomas was the reason her family had lost everything.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your father's company had acquired Elena's father's business.””

“So?””

“The deal wasn't clean.””

My chest tightened.

Richard continued.

“Thomas discovered financial fraud in the company. Elena's father took the blame.””

“Was he guilty?””

“Yes.””

“Then why does this matter?””

“Because Elena believed Thomas had deliberately destroyed her family.””

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

“Did my father hurt her?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what did he do?””

“He threatened her.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“Because she had evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Richard opened another file.

Inside was a bank statement.

Payments.

Large payments.

From a company controlled by Patricia.

To an account belonging to—

Claire.

I stared at the name.

“Claire?””

Richard nodded.

“She was being paid.””

“For what?””

“To keep Maya.””

Maya made a small sound.

Richard continued.

“Claire agreed to raise one child as her own. Patricia would take the other.””

Lena looked at him.

“And Elena?””

“She discovered the plan.””

“What happened?””

“She tried to stop it.””

“Then?””

Richard's eyes lowered.

“She disappeared.””

“Who took her?””

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You know.””

Richard looked at me.

“I know where she went.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

He opened a final folder.

A photograph fell onto the desk.

A roadside motel.

A woman standing beside an old car.

Elena.

Older.

Alive.

Maya stared.

“She survived.””

Richard nodded.

“Until last year.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened last year?””

Richard's voice cracked.

“She came back.””

“Why?””

“To find you.””

“Where is she?””

He didn't answer.

“Richard.””

“She never reached you.””

“Why?””

“Because someone intercepted her.””

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the door.

Then whispered,

“Claire.””

The door opened.

Claire stood there.

Her face was streaked with tears.

“That's not what happened.””

I turned toward her.

“Then tell me what did.””

She looked at Maya.

“I tried to protect you.””

Maya shook her head.

“From my mother?””

“From the people who wanted you dead.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire stepped inside.

“Your mother came back because she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Proof that Patricia wasn't acting alone.””

I stared at her.

“Who else?””

Claire looked at me.

“Your father.””

“No.””

“He wasn't the mastermind.””

“Then who?””

Claire's lips trembled.

“The man who ordered Elena's disappearance.””

She pointed toward Richard.

“Richard knows.””

I turned.

Richard was standing behind his desk.

But the color had drained from his face.

Claire whispered,

“He has known for seventeen years.””

Richard suddenly reached for the desk drawer.

Daniel shouted,

“Don't!””

Richard pulled out a gun.

The room erupted in chaos.

Maya screamed.

I grabbed her and pulled her behind me.

Richard backed toward the window.

“I never wanted this,” he said.

Daniel moved slowly toward him.

“Put it down.””

Richard's hand trembled.

“I did what Thomas asked.””

I stared at him.

“What did he ask?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“To make sure Elena never came back.””

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed completely.

He lowered the gun.

“It's too late.””

“What is?””

May you like

He looked at Maya.

“The person who took Elena knows you're here.””
