Chapter 3: The Name on the Record

I didn't sleep.

Neither did Maya.

At 2:17 in the morning, I found her sitting on the floor beside the fireplace, wrapped in a gray blanket, staring through the dark window at the snow.

She looked seventeen again.

Not twelve.

Not small.

Just seventeen.

Old enough to understand that adults could build entire lives around lies.

I sat beside her.

She didn't look at me.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Am I your daughter?””

The question hit harder than anything Claire had said.

I turned toward her.

“Yes.””

She finally looked at me.

“How do you know?””

“Because I raised you.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

I was silent.

She wiped her cheek.

“I saw your face when you got that message.””

“Maya—”

“Am I?””

I looked directly into her eyes.

“I don't know what that document means.””

Her lips parted.

“So you don't know.””

“I know what matters.””

“What?””

“That you're my daughter.””

“But what if I'm not?””

I took her hand.

“Then biology can explain where you came from. It doesn't explain seventeen years.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“I’m scared.””

“So am I.””

That honesty seemed to calm her.

A little.

Then my phone rang.

My mother's name appeared.

Evelyn Davis.

I stared at it.

Maya whispered, “Answer.””

I did.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Andre, where are you?””

“Colorado.””

“You took Maya?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Keep her with you.””

I stood.

“What do you know?””

Silence.

“Mom.””

She exhaled.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Maya stood too.

“What does that mean?””

My mother heard her.

“Oh God.””

I put the phone on speaker.

“Start talking.””

“I can't.””

“You just said you should have told me.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

My mother's voice broke.

“Claire wasn't supposed to raise her.””

Maya stopped breathing.

I stared at the phone.

“What did you say?””

“I said Claire wasn't supposed to raise Maya.””

Maya grabbed my arm.

“Dad…”

I could barely speak.

“Then who was?””

My mother began crying.

“Her name was Elena.””

The room went silent.

“Who is Elena?””

“She was seventeen.””

I froze.

“Seventeen?””

“When Maya was born.””

My knees weakened.

I sat back down.

My mother continued.

“She was frightened. She didn't know what to do. Claire promised she would help.””

“Help how?””

“She said she would arrange everything.””

“What everything?””

My mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

“An adoption.””

Maya covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“You're saying Maya was adopted?””

“No.””

My mother's answer came immediately.

“She wasn't.””

“Then what happened?””

“I don't know all of it.””

“You knew enough.””

“I knew Claire took the baby.””

“Why?””

“Because she said she could give her a better life.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened to Elena?””

My mother didn't answer.

“Mom.””

“She disappeared.””

Maya's eyes widened.

“Disappeared?””

My mother began sobbing.

“I thought she left.””

I couldn't speak.

Then another voice came through the phone.

A man's voice.

Deep.

Unfamiliar.

“That's not what happened.””

I stood so fast the chair scraped the floor.

“Who is this?””

The man ignored me.

“Maya, if you're listening, you need to know your mother didn't abandon you.””

Maya's face went white.

I gripped the phone.

“Who are you?””

The man paused.

Then said,

“My name is Daniel Reyes.””

I stared at Maya.

She looked as confused as I was.

Daniel continued.

“I've been looking for you for seventeen years.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena was my sister.””

Maya's breath caught.

“And Claire,” Daniel said, “is the reason she never came home.””

The line went dead.

I called back.

The number was disconnected.

Maya stood motionless.

“Dad…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

“If Elena is my mother…”

She couldn't finish.

I walked over and pulled her into my arms.

She broke down against my chest.

I held her tightly.

“No matter what we find,” I whispered, “you are not alone.””

But even as I said it, something inside me refused to settle.

Because there was one question I couldn't ignore.

If Maya had been taken from Elena seventeen years ago…

Why had Claire spent all these years insisting Maya was hers?

At sunrise, I drove back toward town.

I needed answers.

The first stop was going to be my mother's house.

But when I reached the bottom of the mountain, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, there was no number.

Only a photograph.

It showed Claire standing outside a hospital seventeen years earlier.

Beside her was a young woman holding a newborn baby.

Elena.

And in the background stood a much younger version of me.

I stared at the photograph.

I didn't remember being there.

Then I zoomed in.

There was a second man beside me.

A man I had never seen before.

May you like

And written across the bottom of the photograph were four words:

*Andre, you knew everything.*
