Chapter 5: The Woman at the Hospital

Claire didn't look at me.

She looked at Maya.

Then at the folder.

Then back at Maya.

“You shouldn't have brought her here.””

My grip tightened around the folder.

“You don't get to tell me where my daughter goes.””

Claire flinched.

For the first time, she looked genuinely hurt.

“She's not—”

She stopped.

Maya stared at her.

“Not what?””

Claire's mouth closed.

“Finish the sentence,” I said.

Claire looked at me.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

My mother stepped between us.

“Claire, it's over.””

Claire turned sharply.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“You've been hiding it for seventeen years.””

“I was protecting her.””

“From what?””

Claire's eyes moved to Maya.

“From the truth.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“You mean from my own mother?””

Claire's face collapsed.

“You were never supposed to know her.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena wasn't safe.””

“Was she dangerous?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Claire didn't answer.

I stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

Claire's eyes filled.

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

I threw the photograph onto the desk.

“You were there.””

Claire looked at it.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew about this.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why am I in it?””

“You were there.””

“I know I was there. Why don't I remember Elena?””

Claire looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“Because you never met her.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“You arrived after she was taken away.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does.””

“Then explain it.””

Claire took a breath.

“The woman in the photograph wasn't Elena.””

Maya frowned.

“Who was she?””

Claire looked directly at her.

“Your aunt.””

Silence.

Maya's face went blank.

“You said Elena was your mother.””

“She was.””

“Then who was that woman?””

Claire whispered,

“Sarah.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I stared at Claire.

“How many women were involved in this?””

“Three.””

“Claire.””

“I didn't plan for any of this.””

“You signed my name.””

“No.””

“You changed the birth certificate.””

“No.””

“You took a newborn from her mother.””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn't take anyone.””

“Then what did you do?””

She finally looked at me.

“I took responsibility.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Why?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Elena asked me to.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my mother.

She nodded.

“She did.””

My stomach turned.

“You both knew?””

My mother whispered, “Yes.””

Claire continued.

“Elena was seventeen. She was pregnant. Her family wanted her to give you up.””

Maya stared at her.

“She wanted to keep me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't she?””

“Because she was terrified.””

“Of what?””

“Her father.””

I frowned.

“What did he do?””

Claire looked away.

“He threatened to take you.””

Maya's face hardened.

“So she gave me to you?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“She gave you to Andre.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Claire's voice broke.

“She wanted you to have a father who could protect you.””

I stared at her.

“But she knew me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She met you before the hospital.””

My mind searched through seventeen years of memories.

Nothing.

Claire continued.

“Your father knew her.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That's why he was there?””

She nodded.

“He arranged the transfer.””

My mother whispered, “Thomas believed he was protecting you.””

I turned toward her.

“Protecting me from what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya asked the question none of us wanted to hear.

“Where is my mother now?””

Claire looked at her.

“I don't know.””

“You said she asked you to do this.””

“She did.””

“So where did she go?””

Claire swallowed.

“She disappeared two days later.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Did you look for her?””

“Yes.””

“Did Dad?””

Claire hesitated.

“No.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because your father told us you couldn't know.””

“Why?””

Claire's face became pale.

“Because he believed you would go looking.””

“And?””

“And he was afraid of what you'd find.””

A sharp knock came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Another knock.

Then a man's voice echoed through the house.

“Andre?””

I knew that voice.

Daniel.

Maya looked at me.

“That's him.””

I walked toward the hallway.

Daniel stood outside.

He looked older than he had in the photograph.

Maybe late forties.

Dark hair.

Gray at the temples.

He held a worn brown envelope.

“You're Daniel Reyes,” I said.

“Yes.””

“How did you find us?””

“I followed Claire.””

Claire stepped into the hallway.

Daniel looked at her.

“You should have stayed gone.””

Claire's face hardened.

“I've spent seventeen years staying gone.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

His expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya stood beside me.

“Are you my uncle?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is my mother?””

Daniel stared at Claire.

Then he held out the envelope.

“She left this.””

“For me?””

“For Andre.””

I took it.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was yellowed.

The handwriting was small and careful.

*Andre,*

I stopped breathing.

I knew the handwriting.

Not because I remembered it.

Because I had seen it once before.

On a birthday card Maya had received when she was five.

A card Claire had said came from “an old family friend.””

I read the first line again.

*If you are reading this, then they finally told you about Maya.*

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

*I never abandoned my daughter. I left because I was told you had chosen Claire.*

I looked up.

Claire whispered, “That's not true.””

Daniel said, “Keep reading.””

I did.

*Claire told me you knew the truth and wanted nothing to do with me. Your father confirmed it. I believed them.*

My hands went numb.

My father had told Elena that I didn't want her.

I had never met her.

I had never rejected her.

Someone had built an entire life around a lie.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*Andre, if you ever find this, there is one thing you need to know. Maya was not the only child born that night.*

I stopped.

Maya's eyes widened.

Daniel looked at Claire.

Claire whispered,

“Don't.””

I turned the page.

May you like

There was one final sentence.

*Her twin sister is alive.*
