Chapter 5: The Father at the Door
Marcus spent the next hour reading every document in the box.
Every page revealed another piece of a life he had never known existed.
Daniel Carter had not disappeared.
He had been watching.
Waiting.
Preparing.
The emergency custody petition claimed Nia had been kept from him illegally.
It claimed Vanessa had lied about his whereabouts.
It claimed Marcus had no legal relationship to Nia.
That last part was the one Marcus couldn’t stop reading.
No legal relationship.
After all these years.
After school plays.
Birthday cakes.
Broken bones.
Late-night fevers.
After every moment he had shown up.
A stranger could walk in and say he wasn’t her father.
And legally…
Maybe he was right.
Marcus closed the file.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
“No.””
He placed the papers down.
“He doesn’t get to erase six years.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You still want to fight?””
Marcus looked at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“You don’t know what he’ll do.””
“I know what I’ll do.””
“What?””
“I’ll protect her.””
The front doorbell rang.
Both of them stopped.
Neither spoke.
Then it rang again.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Marcus walked downstairs.
Vanessa followed.
The moment he reached the door, he knew.
He didn’t know how.
He just knew.
He opened it.
A man stood outside.
Tall.
Expensive coat.
Perfectly styled hair.
A calm expression that didn’t match the situation.
“Marcus Bennett?””
Marcus stared.
“Yes.””
The man extended his hand.
“Daniel Carter.””
Marcus didn’t take it.
Daniel lowered his hand.
“I expected you to be angry.””
“You expected correctly.””
Daniel looked past him.
Toward the house.
“Is Nia here?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You don’t come here asking questions.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I have legal rights.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Not in my house.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You sound like a father.””
The words were deliberate.
Marcus hated that they worked.
Because they reminded him of the one thing he feared.
Daniel continued.
“I’m not here to fight.””
“Then why are you here?””
“To meet my daughter.””
Marcus stared.
“She’s not ready.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Did Vanessa tell you that?””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Vanessa has been controlling this story for a long time.””
Marcus looked back.
Vanessa had stopped near the staircase.
Her face was pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Hello, Vanessa.””
She said nothing.
The silence between them was filled with years.
Marcus looked between them.
“You know each other well.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“We know each other better than anyone.””
Vanessa’s voice was cold.
“Leave.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You still think you can make me disappear?””
“You disappeared yourself.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“You left.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You made sure I couldn’t come back.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both turned.
He looked at Daniel.
“If you’re here to see Nia, you need to understand something.””
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
“She is not a prize.””
Daniel’s face remained calm.
“I agree.””
“She is not a chance for you to fix your mistakes.””
A pause.
Daniel looked almost impressed.
“You really do love her.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s what worries me.””
“What?””
“That you believe love is enough.””
Marcus stared.
Daniel continued.
“Courts don’t care who attended birthdays.””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“They care about facts.””
Then back to Marcus.
“And the facts are that I am her biological father.””
The front door opened slightly behind Marcus.
A small voice came from the hallway.
“Dad?””
Marcus turned.
Nia stood there.
She had heard everything.
Her eyes were fixed on Daniel.
The man looked at her.
And for the first time, his confident expression broke.
“Nia.””
She stepped backward.
Not forward.
Daniel noticed.
So did Marcus.
The girl whispered,
“I don’t know you.””
Daniel’s face fell.
“Nia…”
“I don’t know you.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I don’t know why you’re here.””
Daniel looked hurt.
But Marcus noticed something else.
Something behind the hurt.
A calculation.
Daniel took a step back.
“I understand.””
He reached into his coat.
“I brought something for you.””
Nia didn’t move.
Daniel held out a small envelope.
“I think you should read this.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“She deserves the truth.””
Then he placed the envelope on the porch.
And walked away.
Marcus waited until his car disappeared.
Then he picked up the envelope.
He didn’t open it.
Not yet.

Because written on the front were three words that made Vanessa cover her mouth.
“From your mother.””
