Chapter 12: The Woman Pulling Every String

Marcus couldn’t stop looking at the photograph.

Rebecca Carter.

The woman he had never met.

The woman connected to every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

“Why would Daniel’s sister be involved?””

Henry looked at Vanessa.

“She wanted control.””

“Control over what?””

“Nia.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Henry sighed.

“Years ago, Daniel’s family built their entire reputation around him. Money. Influence. Power.””

Marcus listened.

“But when Daniel’s marriage failed, everything changed.””

Henry continued.

“Emily was the only person who challenged them.””

“She fought them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she discovered what they were doing.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“What were they doing?””

Henry hesitated.

Then said:

“Moving money through fake companies.””

Marcus frowned.

“Fraud.””

“Yes.””

Daniel wasn’t just careless.

He was dangerous.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“And she knew?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Emily told me.””

The room went silent.

“You knew?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“There it is again.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.””

“What were you afraid of?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Rebecca.””

Henry nodded.

“She threatened her.””

Marcus turned.

“How?””

Henry looked down.

“She told Vanessa that if she helped Emily, she would make sure Vanessa lost everything.””

Marcus stared.

“And Vanessa chose herself.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt because she didn’t deny it.

Marcus looked away.

For years, he had tried to understand Vanessa.

He had defended her.

He had told himself she was struggling.

That she was overwhelmed.

That she loved Nia.

But love without courage could still destroy someone.

“Why did you treat Nia the way you did?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“The chores.””

Her face changed.

“The way you made her feel like she didn’t belong.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I hated seeing Emily in her.””

Marcus froze.

The confession was almost too cruel.

“She had Emily’s eyes.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Her smile.””

Her voice broke.

“And every time Nia looked happy, I remembered that Emily was the person Nia would always choose first.””

Marcus stared.

“You punished a child for reminding you of her mother.””

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.””

No excuse.

No defense.

Just the truth.

Before Marcus could respond, his phone rang.

Rebecca Hall.

The attorney.

He answered.

“Hello?””

“Mr. Bennett, I found something.””

Marcus walked away slightly.

“What?””

“A document Emily left behind.””

“What kind of document?””

“A legal statement.””

Marcus frowned.

“About what?””

Rebecca’s voice became serious.

“About Nia’s guardianship.””

Marcus looked back at Vanessa.

“What does it say?””

A pause.

Then:

“Emily named someone as Nia’s permanent guardian.””

Marcus’s heart dropped.

“Who?””

Rebecca answered:

“Not Vanessa.””

Marcus looked at Henry.

Then Caleb.

Then the empty room.

“Who?””

Rebecca continued.

“Marcus Bennett.””

He stopped breathing.

“What?””

“She legally named you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Even after everything.

Even after the secrets.

Emily had trusted him.

“But there’s a problem.””

His eyes opened.

“What problem?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“The document was never filed.””

“Why?””

“Because someone removed it from the court records.””

Marcus’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca said:

“The person who removed it signed the paperwork herself.””

Marcus already knew.

But he needed to hear it.

“Who?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Vanessa Bennett.””

Marcus turned slowly.

Vanessa was standing there.

And she knew.

She knew he had found out.

The woman who had spent years saying she protected Nia had been the person who erased the one thing that could have kept her safe.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I thought I was saving her.””

Marcus stared.

“You erased her mother’s final wish.””

“I was scared.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You were choosing.””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked like she understood.

She hadn’t lost control of the situation.

She had created it.

Then Henry’s phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Marcus asked.

Henry looked up.

“We have a bigger problem.””

“What?””

Henry turned the phone around.

A news alert filled the screen.
