Chapter 14: The Truth Daniel Tried to Bury

The courtroom became silent.

The judge looked directly at Daniel.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel adjusted his suit.

“Your Honor, there were misunderstandings.””

The judge didn’t look convinced.

“Misunderstandings?””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“My relationship with Emily was complicated.””

Marcus almost laughed.

Everyone used that word.

Complicated.

As if it could cover everything.

Daniel continued.

“After our separation, Emily made it difficult for me to see Nia.””

The judge looked at the documents.

“But you filed no custody motions?””

Daniel paused.

“I was dealing with personal issues.””

“What kind?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

The judge waited.

Finally, he said:

“Financial difficulties.””

Marcus watched Rebecca.

She didn’t react.

That worried him.

Because she knew more.

The judge looked toward Rebecca.

“Do you have additional information?””

Rebecca stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

She approached.

“My concern is that Mr. Carter is presenting only part of the history.””

Daniel’s attorney objected.

“Your Honor—”

“Overruled.””

Rebecca continued.

“Daniel Carter was not absent because Emily prevented contact.””

She placed a document down.

“He was absent because he was under investigation.””

The courtroom went quiet.

The judge looked at the paper.

“For financial crimes?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That has nothing to do with my ability to parent.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Perhaps not.””

She looked at him.

“But your actions afterward do.””

The judge looked up.

“Explain.””

Rebecca turned.

“After Emily became ill, Mr. Carter attempted to regain custody.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But not through the court.””

The judge frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Rebecca placed another document down.

“He attempted to negotiate a private agreement with Emily.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What kind of agreement?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“One where Emily would surrender custody permanently.””

The room changed.

Daniel stood.

“That’s not what happened.””

Rebecca continued.

“Emily refused.””

“Because she was unstable.””

“No.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Because she discovered your family’s financial crimes.””

The judge looked sharply at Daniel.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus felt Nia’s hand move away from his.

He looked at her.

She was watching Daniel.

Not as a father.

As a stranger.

Then Daniel’s attorney stood.

“This is irrelevant.””

The judge disagreed.

“Continue.””

Rebecca opened another file.

“Emily wrote a statement before her death.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

The judge looked at him.

“No?””

He recovered quickly.

“I mean, I was unaware.””

Rebecca pulled out the letter.

“Emily stated that she feared Mr. Carter would use Nia as leverage.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

Rebecca read:

“She wrote that Nia was not a possession to be transferred between adults.””

The words echoed.

Because that was exactly what everyone had done.

Everyone except Marcus.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Do you deny attempting to use custody as a way to pressure Emily?””

Daniel remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Then Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I need to say something.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked surprised.

Vanessa looked terrified.

But determined.

The judge allowed it.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I lied.””

The courtroom went still.

“I lied about Emily. I lied about Daniel. I lied about the documents.””

She looked at Nia.

“And I hurt her.””

Nia looked down.

Vanessa cried.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting her.””

Marcus listened.

“But I wasn’t.””

She looked at the judge.

“I was protecting myself.””

No one spoke.

Then Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

And Nia’s pain did not disappear because Vanessa finally admitted it.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Then she made her decision.

“Temporary custody will remain with Mr. Bennett.””

Marcus exhaled.

Nia looked at him.

But the judge continued.

“However, this matter is not fully resolved.””

Marcus nodded.

He expected that.

“Mr. Carter’s parental rights will be evaluated.””

Daniel looked angry.

“But—”

The judge cut him off.

“Furthermore, Mrs. Bennett, your actions regarding the withheld documentation will be referred for investigation.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus felt nothing.

Only exhaustion.

Then the judge looked at Nia.

“Nia?””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

The judge softened.

“I want you to understand something.””

Nia waited.

“This was never your responsibility to fix.””

A tear fell from Nia’s cheek.

The hearing ended.

Outside the courtroom, Marcus thought it was over.

He was wrong.

Because Daniel was waiting.

“You think you won.””

Marcus stopped.

Nia held his hand.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’m not your enemy.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then stop acting like one.””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“I found something.””

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“What?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Something Emily left behind.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“A video.””

Nia’s face changed.

“A video of my mom?””

Daniel nodded.

“She recorded it before she died.””

Marcus felt uneasy.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at him.

Then handed over a small drive.

“She wanted Nia to have it.””

Marcus took it.

“Why give it to me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because after everything…”

He swallowed.

“I think she trusted you more than she trusted me.””

Then he walked away.

That night, Marcus and Nia sat together.

The drive sat between them.

Neither touched it.

Finally, Nia whispered:

“Do you think she knew me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because she fought for you.””

Nia nodded.

Then she pressed play.

The screen lit up.

A woman appeared.

Emily.

Older than in the photographs.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Hi, Nia.””

Nia immediately covered her mouth.

Because after all these years…

Her mother knew her name.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””

She paused.

“But if you’re watching…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Something went wrong.””

Marcus and Nia stared.

Then Emily said:

“And I need you to know the truth about the person who helped me hide you.””

The video glitched.

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

May you like

A sentence that made Marcus and Nia look at each other.

“She is not who you think she is.””
