Chapter 11: The House With No Memories
Marcus drove faster than he should have.
But he couldn’t slow down.
Not this time.
Not when another secret was waiting.
Not when his children were already carrying too much.
The old house sat outside town.
Abandoned.
Broken.
Forgotten.
The kind of place people passed without noticing.
Caleb stood near the driveway when Marcus arrived.
The boy ran toward him.
“Dad.””
Marcus immediately hugged him.
“Are you okay?””
Caleb nodded.
“I followed Mom.””
Marcus pulled back.
“You followed her?””
“I wanted to know where she was going.””
Marcus wanted to be angry.
But he couldn’t.
Because he understood.
Caleb was looking for answers too.
“Where is she?””
Caleb pointed.
“Inside.””
Marcus looked at the house.
The windows were dark.
The door was slightly open.
He stepped forward.
“Stay behind me.””
Inside, the house smelled like dust.
Old wood.
And memories.
Marcus walked through the rooms.
Then stopped.
A photograph hung crooked on the wall.
A young Vanessa.
A young Emily.
And Nia.
Together.
Marcus stared.
Because he had never seen that picture.
A voice came from upstairs.
“I knew you’d come.””
Marcus looked up.
Vanessa stood on the stairs.
She looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just broken.
“Why are you here?””
She came down slowly.
“Because this is where everything started.””
Marcus looked around.
“What is this place?””
Vanessa touched the wall.
“This was Emily’s house.””
Marcus froze.
“Why do you have access?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because after she died, I kept some things.””
“You kept things.””
“Yes.””
“Like the letter?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa sat down.
“Because I was jealous.””
The honesty surprised him.
“Of Emily?””
“Yes.””
Marcus stared.
“She was Nia’s mother.””
“I know.””
“And you hated that?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I loved Nia.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Love doesn’t look like this.””
“I know.””
The admission came quietly.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t explain.
She simply accepted it.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa looked up.
“About what?””
“Everything.””
She was silent.
Then she said,
“I wasn’t trying to send Nia away.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then why did she write that?””
“Because I told her something.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I told her Daniel wanted her back.””
Marcus stared.
“That was true.””
“Yes.””
“So?””
“I also told her that if he won, she might never see you again.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“You scared her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Because I was scared.””
There it was again.
The same excuse.
But this time it sounded different.
Smaller.
“I thought if Nia was afraid of losing me, she would stop looking for everyone else.””
Marcus stared.
“You wanted her to choose you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth was ugly.
But it was finally the truth.
Then footsteps came from another room.
Marcus turned.
Caleb froze.
Because someone else was there.
A man.
Older.
Holding a folder.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Where did you come from?””
The man ignored her.
He looked at Marcus.
“You’re Marcus Bennett.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man held out the folder.
“My name is Henry Mills.””
Rachel’s last name.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Rachel?””
“My daughter.””
The man looked at Vanessa.
“You promised me this would stay hidden.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I tried.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Henry opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Not old.
Recent.
Marcus took it.
And froze.
It showed Vanessa.
Standing with someone.
Someone Marcus recognized.
Someone who was supposed to have no connection to her.
Daniel Carter.
Together.
Talking.
Secretly.
“When was this taken?””
Henry answered:
“Three months ago.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You told me you hadn’t seen him.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Henry spoke again.
“That’s because she wasn’t meeting him.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Henry’s face was grim.
“She was meeting someone else.””
“Who?””
Henry pulled out another photograph.
A woman.
A woman Marcus had never seen.
But Vanessa recognized instantly.
Her face went white.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Rebecca.””
The same name Rachel had mentioned.
Rebecca Carter.
Daniel’s sister.
May you like
Henry looked at Marcus.
“And she’s the reason all of this started.””
