Chapter 6: The Brother Who Wanted Everything

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

*Thomas Whitmore.*

My father’s brother.

The man whose face I had never seen.

The man whose name had just appeared in a nightmare nobody knew existed.

The ringing stopped.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then the phone rang again.

My father stared at it.

He looked like he was deciding whether answering it would make everything real.

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

My father didn’t look at him.

“What?””

“Don’t answer alone.””

My father finally looked up.

There was something different in his eyes now.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Determination.

He pressed the answer button and put the phone on speaker.

“Thomas.””

A deep voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel.””

The calmness of that voice made my skin crawl.

It sounded like someone calling an old friend.

Not someone whose secrets had just been exposed.

“I heard you had an interesting evening,” Thomas said.

Nobody spoke.

My father’s hand tightened.

“How did you know?””

A small laugh came through the phone.

“Because you were never as careful as you thought.””

Michael looked at the security system.

My father noticed.

“Were you watching us?””

Thomas didn’t answer directly.

“I’ve been watching for a long time.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Why?””

“Why?””

Thomas repeated the word like it was funny.

“After everything our family has lost, you still ask why?””

My father stepped closer to the phone.

“This has nothing to do with Lily.””

A pause.

Then Thomas laughed quietly.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

I felt my father’s hand move toward mine.

He held it tightly.

Thomas continued.

“Everything has to do with Lily.””

My father’s voice became dangerous.

“Don’t say her name.””

“Why? Because she’s your daughter?””

The room froze.

Thomas knew.

He knew everything.

My father looked at Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

Then Michael.

“How long have you known?””

Thomas sighed.

“Daniel, you always did this.””

“Did what?””

“Protected everyone except yourself.””

My father didn’t respond.

Thomas continued.

“You built your whole life around a child who may not even carry your blood.””

I felt my father’s hand tighten.

But he didn’t let go.

“She is my daughter.””

The words came immediately.

No hesitation.

Thomas went quiet.

Then he said:

“You really believe that.””

My father’s eyes changed.

Not because he doubted me.

Because Thomas was trying to make him doubt.

Again.

The same trick.

The same wound.

Only this time, my father saw it.

“You’re not going to use her against me,” he said.

Thomas laughed.

“Too late.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

My father stared at the phone.

Then he slowly put it down.

Michael broke the silence.

“He knew about the camera.””

“Yes,” my father said.

“He knew about the documents.””

“Yes.””

“And he knew Lily was the reason.””

My father nodded.

Rachel crossed her arms.

“Now you understand.””

My father turned toward her.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“I understand that you knew.””

Rachel looked away.

“That’s different.””

“No, it isn’t.””

He stepped closer.

“You walked into my house knowing someone was trying to destroy my family.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“I tried to stop it.””

“After helping start it?””

That hit her.

She looked down.

For the first time, she had no response.

Vanessa quietly spoke.

“Daniel…”

He turned toward her.

She stopped immediately.

Maybe she realized she no longer had the right to ask for anything.

My father looked at all of them.

“Everyone knew something.””

Nobody argued.

“Everyone except me.””

I watched my father’s face.

For years, I had seen him as someone who could solve anything.

A problem appeared.

He fixed it.

Someone hurt us.

He protected us.

But now he looked human.

A man who had been surrounded by secrets.

A man who had failed to see what was happening inside his own home.

My father looked at me.

“Lily.””

I looked up.

“I need you to know something.””

I waited.

“Nothing changes.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“You mean…”

“You’re my daughter.””

His voice was firm.

“Not because of a piece of paper.””

He touched my shoulder.

“Not because of a name on a document.””

His eyes softened.

“Because I raised you. Because I loved you. Because I chose you every single day.””

I couldn’t stop the tears anymore.

For the first time since the vase broke, I believed him.

Not because he said sorry.

Because he finally understood what I needed.

To be believed.

Michael cleared his throat.

“We need to focus.””

My father nodded.

He was right.

“What do we know?””

Rachel walked toward the table.

“Thomas has been planning this for months.””

“How?””

“He knew about your grandmother’s will.””

My father frowned.

“How?””

“Because he was supposed to inherit.””

Michael looked at the document.

“But Lily got everything.””

Rachel nodded.

“Your grandmother changed the will after discovering Thomas had been manipulating family finances.””

My father looked shocked.

“She never told me.””

“She was afraid.””

“Of Thomas?””

Rachel nodded.

“She knew what he was capable of.””

My father looked at the papers.

“And Lily?””

Rachel answered carefully.

“Your grandmother wanted to protect her.””

Michael frowned.

“A child?””

“She believed adults around her would fight over money.””

Rachel looked at me.

“So she placed everything in Lily’s name.””

I looked at my father.

“Why me?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my father said:

“Because your great-grandmother loved you.””

My throat tightened.

I had never met her.

But somehow, someone I never knew had believed in me.

Even before I understood anything.

Rachel continued.

“Thomas couldn’t access the inheritance while Lily was under Daniel’s care.””

Michael understood.

“So he needed Daniel to lose custody.””

“Yes.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“And you helped him.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know the whole plan.””

“But you knew enough.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

A loud noise suddenly came from upstairs.

Everyone stopped.

A door closing.

My father immediately turned.

“Lily?””

“I’m here.””

But then Michael looked toward the staircase.

“Was anyone else in the house?””

The question made everyone freeze.

The mansion had felt crowded.

Now it felt empty.

My father grabbed his phone.

He checked the security system.

The cameras were loading.

One by one.

Front door.

Garage.

Garden.

Hallway.

Then the upstairs camera appeared.

The screen showed my bedroom door.

Open.

My father’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael looked at him.

“What?””

“My bedroom was locked.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone had been upstairs.

Near my room.

My father rushed toward the stairs.

Everyone followed.

When we reached my bedroom, the door was slightly open.

My father pushed it wide.

Everything looked normal.

My bed.

My toys.

My books.

Then I saw it.

Something sitting on my pillow.

A small envelope.

My father walked slowly toward it.

“Don’t touch it,” Michael warned.

But my father already saw the name written on the front.

It wasn’t his.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It was mine.

*LILY.*

My father opened it carefully.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Five words.

And when he read them, his face changed.

“What does it say?”” Michael asked.

My father handed him the note.

Michael read it.

Then looked at me.

The words were simple.

But they made everyone afraid.

*“Ask your father about Emma.””*

My father stepped back.

Because Emma was my mother’s name.

May you like

And the last time anyone had spoken about her…

Was the day she died.
