Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording

Vanessa stared at me from the hallway.

Her fingers tightened around the phone in her hand.

“What are you doing here?”” she asked.

Her voice was soft.

Too soft.

I looked at the security room door behind me.

“I just wanted to see the cameras.””

A strange silence filled the hallway.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“You’re curious about cameras now?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“Why?””

I swallowed.

“Because maybe they saw what happened.””

For a second, her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The confidence disappeared.

The perfect calm expression cracked.

Then she laughed quietly.

“Oh, Lily.””

She placed a hand on my shoulder.

“You’re still trying to prove something that doesn’t matter.””

I stepped away from her.

“It matters to me.””

Her smile faded.

“You need to stop blaming other people for your mistakes.””

The words hit me like a slap.

Because those were the exact words my father had used.

I ran away before she could say anything else.

That evening, my father arrived home late.

I waited near the staircase, hoping I could talk to him.

“Daddy?””

He removed his coat.

“What is it?””

“I found the camera.””

He looked confused.

“What camera?””

“The one in the living room.””

His expression changed.

“Lily, this again?””

“Please,” I said.

“Just look at it.””

He sighed.

“I’m tired.””

“But what if I’m telling the truth?””

My father looked at me.

A long pause followed.

Then he said quietly:

“Why would Vanessa lie about something like this?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because I was only seven.

I didn’t know how to explain jealousy.

I didn’t know how to explain manipulation.

I only knew that someone had hurt me.

And the person I trusted most refused to see it.

That night, something unexpected happened.

My father’s older brother, Michael, came to visit.

Uncle Michael had always been different.

He listened before speaking.

He asked questions.

And he never made me feel small.

When he saw my face, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“Lily,” he said gently, “what happened?””

I looked at my father.

Then at Vanessa.

Then I whispered:

“The vase.””

Michael frowned.

“What vase?””

Nobody answered.

Finally, my father explained.

“She broke a family antique.””

Michael looked at me.

“Did you?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He studied my face for a moment.

Then he turned to my father.

“Did you check the cameras?””

My father froze.

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“Daniel already handled it.””

Michael looked at her.

“Handled it how?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Michael walked toward the security room.

“Let’s see what happened.””

My father followed.

Vanessa stayed behind.

But I noticed something.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t annoyed.

She was terrified.

The security system took several minutes to load.

Every second felt like an hour.

Finally, the monitor showed the living room.

The date appeared on the screen.

The day the vase broke.

Everyone gathered around.

Nobody spoke.

The video began.

There I was.

Seven years old.

Sitting on the couch, reading my book.

Exactly as I had said.

Then I got up and walked toward the kitchen.

A few seconds later…

Vanessa entered the room.

My father leaned closer.

The footage continued.

Vanessa looked around.

She walked directly toward the vase.

The entire room went silent.

Then she reached out her hand.

And touched it.

My father’s face changed.

“No…”

The video continued.

Vanessa didn’t accidentally knock the vase over.

She moved it.

She adjusted it carefully.

Then she stepped back.

A few moments later, the vase fell.

Right after that, she ran into the hallway and started shouting for everyone.

Pretending she had just discovered it.

My father stopped breathing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael quietly said:

“Daniel…”

But my father wasn’t listening.

He was staring at the screen.

At the truth he had refused to see.

Behind them, Vanessa whispered:

“Turn that off.””

Everyone turned.

She stood near the doorway.

Her face was pale.

My father looked at her.

“Why?””

Her lips parted.

No words came out.

For the first time, she had no story ready.

My father looked back at the screen.

Then at me.

And his expression broke.

Because he finally understood.

The person he punished was innocent.

And the person he trusted had been standing behind him the entire time.

But before anyone could say another word, the security monitor suddenly flickered.

A new file appeared on the screen.

A recording from the night before the vase broke.

And the file name made my father’s face turn completely white.

Because it wasn’t just the vase incident.

It was a video of Vanessa saying my name.

May you like

And she wasn’t talking about the vase.

She was saying something much worse.
