Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

The entire world seemed to stop.

My father stared at the woman standing in the doorway.

His face had lost all color.

Not the kind of fear I had seen when he discovered the truth about Vanessa.

Not the kind of anger he showed when Thomas threatened us.

This was something else.

This was shock.

Impossible shock.

“Emma?””

The woman’s lips trembled.

“Daniel.””

The name came out like a whisper.

I looked at my father.

Then at the woman.

My heart started racing.

Because I knew that name.

Emma.

My mother.

The woman whose picture sat beside my bed.

The woman everyone told me I had lost.

The woman who was supposed to be gone.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father took one slow step forward.

“No.””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know how this looks.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I watched them lower your coffin.””

The woman looked down.

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

He looked like he was trying to force himself awake.

“This isn’t possible.””

Michael moved between them.

“Daniel, don’t.””

The woman stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“Then explain why everyone believed you were dead.””

The woman looked at him.

Then at me.

And her expression broke.

“Lily.””

My body froze.

Nobody said my name like that.

Not even my father.

It was the way someone says the name of a person they have missed for years.

My father immediately stepped in front of me.

“Don’t.””

Emma looked hurt.

“I would never hurt her.””

“You left her.””

The words came out before he could stop them.

The room became silent.

Emma closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let her grow up thinking she had no mother.””

“I know.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

My father’s anger was covering something deeper.

Pain.

A pain he had carried for years.

Emma looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t know what to say.

I had spent years imagining what my mother would look like if she came back.

I imagined running into her arms.

I imagined asking her why she left.

But now that she was standing in front of me…

I felt confused.

Scared.

Lost.

My father noticed.

He lowered himself beside me.

“Lily.””

I looked at him.

“Is she really my mommy?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Emma covered her mouth.

Hearing me call her that seemed to break something inside her.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered again.

Michael crossed his arms.

“We need answers.””

Emma nodded.

“You deserve them.””

She stepped inside carefully.

Like she knew she no longer belonged in this house.

Rachel stared at her.

“You’re alive.””

Emma looked at her.

“Yes.””

Rachel looked angry.

“You knew this would happen.””

Emma shook her head.

“I hoped it wouldn’t.””

My father looked between them.

“You two knew.””

Rachel looked down.

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Emma swallowed.

“I tried to protect you.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“By pretending to be dead?””

The words hurt everyone.

Emma looked away.

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I chose Lily.””

My father froze.

Emma looked at me.

“Thomas was going to use her.””

The room became quiet.

“He knew about the inheritance. He knew about the trust. He knew Lily was the key.””

My father stared.

“Then why fake your death?””

Emma took a deep breath.

“Because he needed me gone.””

Michael frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I had proof.””

She looked toward the laptop.

“The same proof you found tonight.””

My father looked at the screen.

“The recording.””

Emma nodded.

“Thomas had been stealing from the family for years.””

My father looked stunned.

“He admitted it?””

“He admitted enough.””

Emma walked toward the laptop.

“He knew if I exposed him, he would lose everything.””

Michael asked:

“So he tried to eliminate the problem.””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

My father looked at her.

“And you thought disappearing would protect us?””

Emma’s eyes filled.

“I thought if Thomas believed I was gone, he would stop looking.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He waited.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“For Lily.””

Emma nodded.

“He knew she was the future owner of everything.””

My father looked at me.

“He wanted my daughter.””

Emma’s expression hardened.

“He wanted her trust.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa suddenly whispered:

“Thomas told me Lily was the problem.””

Everyone looked at her.

Emma turned.

“You believed him.””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Emma shook her head.

“He used your insecurity.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I know.””

My father looked at Emma.

“How much did you know?””

“About Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

Emma sighed.

“I knew Thomas was looking for someone close to you.””

“And you didn’t warn me?””

“I tried.””

My father stared.

“What?””

Emma looked toward Rachel.

Rachel stepped forward.

“She tried to contact you.””

My father looked confused.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“But I never heard from her.””

Emma’s expression changed.

“Because Thomas intercepted the messages.””

Michael immediately understood.

“The emails.””

Rachel nodded.

“He controlled information around Daniel.””

My father looked back at Emma.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

Emma’s eyes moved toward me.

“Because I saw what happened.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

“I watched from a distance.””

The words shocked me.

“You watched me?””

Emma started crying.

“I know how terrible that sounds.””

My father’s voice was quiet.

“You watched our daughter grow up without you.””

“I wanted to come back every day.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What?””

“Threats.””

The room went silent.

“Thomas sent me photographs of Lily.””

My father’s face changed.

“Photographs?””

“Yes.””

“He threatened her?””

Emma nodded.

“He told me if I returned, he would make sure Lily was taken away from you.””

My father looked furious.

“He used our daughter as a weapon.””

“Yes.””

Emma looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“You should have told me.””

Everyone became quiet.

My father looked at me.

Emma looked at me.

I didn’t know where the words came from.

But they were true.

“I waited for you.””

Emma covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“I thought you didn’t love me.””

She started crying.

“Oh, Lily.””

She took a step forward.

My father looked at me.

Then at Emma.

For a moment, nobody knew what to do.

Then my father slowly moved aside.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Emma approached carefully.

She knelt in front of me.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.””

I looked at her.

“Why did everyone lie?””

Emma looked down.

“Because they thought the truth would hurt you.””

“It did.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

Then she held out her hand.

I looked at my father.

He nodded.

Slowly, I took her hand.

And the moment I did, she started crying.

Not like someone pretending.

Like someone who had been holding pain for years.

But before anything else could happen, Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He listened.

Then his face became serious.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then he looked at my father.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

Michael lowered the phone.

“The police are outside.””

My father frowned.

“Why?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“They received a report.””

“About what?””

Michael looked at me.

“About Lily being in danger.””

My father went still.

Emma stood.

“What?””

Michael continued.

“The caller claimed Daniel kidnapped Lily and is refusing to hand her over.””

My father stared.

Everyone understood at the same time.

Thomas had made his move.

He wasn’t coming for the money anymore.

He was coming for the one thing my father could never lose.

Me.

Outside, sirens grew louder.

And then my father’s phone received a message.

One sentence.

From Thomas.

*“You wanted the truth, Daniel. Now let everyone hear it.””*

My father looked toward the front door.

May you like

Because the battle was no longer hidden.

It had reached the world outside.
