Chapter 5: The Secret Buried With My Mother
The photograph on the floor felt louder than any scream.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The entire room seemed frozen around one piece of paper.
My father stared at it like he was afraid to pick it up.
I had never seen him look that way before.
Not when he lost business deals.
Not when people disappointed him.
Not even when he learned Vanessa had betrayed him.
This was different.
This was fear.
“Daniel,” Michael said quietly.
“What is it?””
My father didn’t answer.
Rachel stood near the doorway, watching.
She wasn’t smiling anymore.
She looked almost sad.
Almost.
My father finally bent down and picked up the paper.
His hands were shaking.
I had never seen my father’s hands shake.
He read the page again.
Then again.
Like the words might change if he looked at them long enough.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
Nobody answered.
My heart started beating faster.
“Daddy?””
He looked at me.
And the expression on his face scared me more than anything.
Because I wasn’t seeing anger.
I wasn’t seeing disappointment.
I was seeing confusion.
Like he didn’t know how to look at me anymore.
“What does it say?”” Michael asked.
My father swallowed.
“It’s a hospital record.””
Michael took the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed too.
“Lily…”
I stepped closer.
“What?””
Michael looked at my father.
Then at me.
He didn’t say anything.
That silence hurt.
“Please,” I whispered.
“What does it say?””
My father closed his eyes.
Then Rachel spoke.
“Lily was born with a different father listed on her original records.””
The room went silent.
I didn’t understand.
Different father?
I looked at my father.
“But you’re my daddy.””
My voice sounded smaller than I expected.
Everyone looked at me.
My father immediately moved toward me.
“No.””
He dropped to his knees.
“No, Lily. Look at me.””
I looked at him.
“You are my daughter.””
His voice cracked.
“You understand me?””
I nodded slowly.
“But the paper…”
He looked back at the document.
And for the first time, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.
Not about loving me.
About what he knew.
Rachel stepped forward.
“The truth is complicated.””
Michael looked at her angrily.
“You created chaos in this family and now you want to act like you’re helping?””
Rachel ignored him.
“Daniel deserves to know.””
My father stood.
“What do you know?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Your wife knew.””
The words hit harder than anything before.
My father froze.
“My wife?””
“Lily’s mother.””
The room changed.
My mother.
The woman whose photograph sat beside my bed.
The woman I barely remembered.
My father’s expression softened.
“Don’t talk about her.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You have spent seven years believing one story.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“What story?””
“That your wife left you a perfect family.””
Nobody spoke.
Rachel continued.
“But she left behind secrets.””
I hated hearing my mother talked about like this.
Even though I was young, I knew something was wrong.
My mother wasn’t there to defend herself.
And everyone else was telling their version of her.
My father noticed my face.
He immediately turned back to me.
“Lily, go upstairs.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked surprised.
“I don’t want you hearing this.””
“I’m part of it.””
That sentence made him stop.
Because I was right.
Whatever secret they were discussing…
It was about me.
My father looked at Michael.
Then back at me.
Finally, he nodded.
“Stay with me.””
I held onto his hand.
Rachel watched.
Then she continued.
“Your wife and I knew each other before you met her.””
My father looked confused.
“You never mentioned her.””
“Because we weren’t friends.””
“Then what were you?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Enemies.””
Michael frowned.
“Enemies?””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew something about me.””
My father stared.
“And you knew something about her.””
“Yes.””
The rain outside grew louder.
Rachel continued.
“Years ago, before Lily was born, your wife discovered financial fraud connected to someone close to her.””
My father frowned.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately looked away.
Everyone noticed.
My father’s face darkened.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
Rachel answered:
“More than she admitted.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Rachel looked at her.
“You wanted the truth.””
“No, I wanted this to stop.””
My father stepped toward Vanessa.
“What truth?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“What truth?””
She looked down.
“I knew about Lily.””
My father stared.
“You knew what?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I knew there was a question about her biological father.””
The room went silent.
My father looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“How?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Rachel told me.””
Michael immediately looked at Rachel.
“So this started before the vase.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My father turned toward Vanessa.
“All this time…”
His voice was barely audible.
“You knew?””
Vanessa cried.
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“But you knew there was a possibility.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I loved you.””
My father laughed once.
But there was no happiness in it.
“You loved me while keeping the biggest secret of my life?””
Vanessa had no answer.
I looked at my father.
He looked broken.
Not because he thought I wasn’t his daughter.
Because someone had taken years of his life and filled them with lies.
Rachel walked closer.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
Michael looked at her.
“You caused it.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No. I revealed it.””
My father looked at her.
“Why now?””
Rachel was quiet.
Then she said:
“Because someone was getting ready to use Lily.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What?””
Rachel opened another document.
“This was the next step.””
She handed it to him.
He read it.
Then his face turned pale.
Michael took it.
His eyes widened.
“What is this?””
My father answered quietly.
“A legal petition.””
“For what?””
My father looked at me.
Then at the paper.
“They were preparing to challenge my guardianship.””
My stomach dropped.
I didn’t understand every word.
But I understood one thing.
Someone wanted to take me away.
My father held the document tightly.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa started crying.
“Daniel, I never signed anything.””
Rachel laughed.
“You didn’t have to.””
My father looked at Rachel.
“Then who did?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She walked toward the table and placed another file down.
“This is the person behind everything.””
Michael opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man.
My father looked at the picture.
Then stepped back.
“No.””
I looked at the photograph.
I didn’t know the man.
But my father did.
Because he whispered a name I had never heard before.
“Thomas.””
Rachel nodded.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
Michael looked confused.
“Your brother?””
My father didn’t answer.
Because his face told us enough.
This wasn’t just a stranger.
This was family.
Rachel spoke softly.
“Your own brother has been trying to destroy you for years.””
My father stared at the photo.
“Why?””
Rachel looked toward me.
“Because Lily inherited something he wanted.””
My father’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Rachel placed one final document on the table.
A copy of a will.
The name at the top made my father freeze.
*Evelyn Whitmore.*
His grandmother.
The woman who owned the antique vase.
The woman whose fortune had built the Whitmore family.
Rachel pointed to the bottom of the page.
“Your grandmother changed her will before she died.””
My father read the final sentence.
And his face went completely pale.
Because the inheritance wasn’t left to him.
It wasn’t left to Thomas.
It wasn’t left to any adult.
It was left to me.
Lily Whitmore.
Rachel looked at me.
“That’s why they needed you to disappear.””
And then my father’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
May you like
Because the caller ID showed a name everyone in the room recognized.
*Thomas Whitmore.*
