Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Smile
For the first time in my life, I saw my father look at Vanessa like she was a stranger.
Not his wife.
Not the woman who had shared his home for years.
A stranger.
The question hung in the room.
“Who are you really?””
Vanessa stood completely still.
The confidence she had carried for so long was gone. The perfect posture, the gentle smile, the calm voice she used whenever guests were around—all of it disappeared.
She looked like someone who had just watched a door close behind her.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
My father didn’t blink.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“Don’t say my name like you’re confused.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
Michael let out a bitter laugh.
“That’s what everyone says after they get caught.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
My father stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
The room became silent.
Even the house seemed to be listening.
The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked loudly.
One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.
But Vanessa didn’t speak.
And that silence said more than words could.
My father shook his head slowly.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked down.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been lying to me?””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t lie about everything.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“That’s not an answer.””
She wiped her cheek.
“I loved you.””
The words made something change in his face.
Not because he believed her.
Because he was trying to understand how someone could say those words after hurting his child.
“You loved me?”” he repeated.
“Yes.””
“And you hurt my daughter?””
Vanessa looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she might apologize.
I thought maybe she would finally admit everything.
Instead, she looked away.
That small movement told me everything.
My father noticed it too.
“You can’t even look at her.””
Vanessa quickly shook her head.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
My father’s voice rose.
“You want to talk about fair?””
He pointed toward me.
“She spent days thinking I didn’t trust her because of you.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I made a mistake.””
Michael stepped forward.
“No. A mistake is forgetting a birthday. A mistake is saying the wrong thing during an argument.””
He pointed toward the security screen.
“That was a plan.””
Vanessa said nothing.
I stood behind my father, watching everything happen.
A part of me felt relieved.
The truth was finally out.
But another part of me felt afraid.
Because I realized something.
The vase was never really about the vase.
It was about making my father doubt me.
And that meant Vanessa had been trying to hurt me long before that day.
My father looked at Michael.
“Find out who that woman is.””
Michael nodded.
“I’ll start tonight.””
Vanessa suddenly looked up.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Her reaction was immediate.
Too immediate.
My father noticed.
“Why not?””
She froze.
“I mean… because this has gone too far.””
Michael narrowed his eyes.
“You’re afraid of what we’ll find.””
“No.””
But her voice was weak.
My father stared at her.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I can’t tell you.””
The room went quiet.
My father’s face changed.
“You can’t?””
She whispered:
“If I tell you, everything will be destroyed.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered me.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Everything?””
She covered her face with her hands.
“I never wanted this.””
Michael shook his head.
“You wanted something.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
“The money?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“The house?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked toward me.
And for one terrifying second, I thought she was going to blame me again.
Instead, she said:
“I wanted Daniel to stop seeing Lily as the only person who mattered.””
My father stared at her.
I felt my chest tighten.
Even after everything…
Even after being exposed…
She still said it.
She still made it about me.
“Why?”” my father asked.
Vanessa looked down.
“Because before me, there was only her.””
I didn’t understand.
I was seven.
I didn’t understand why an adult could be jealous of a child.
I only understood that someone had wanted me to feel unwanted.
My father’s voice became quiet.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked at her.
“If you knew, you would never have done this.””
Vanessa started crying harder.
But this time, nobody comforted her.
Not even me.
Because I remembered standing alone in that living room.
I remembered saying I didn’t do it.
I remembered my father’s disappointed face.
And I remembered how small I felt.
A sound suddenly came from the security room.
A notification.
Everyone turned.
The computer screen had turned back on.
A new message appeared.
*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.*
Michael walked quickly toward the computer.
“What?””
He clicked the notification.
A list of files appeared.
Someone had accessed the security system from outside the house.
My father frowned.
“Can someone do that?””
Michael looked serious.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Someone who knows the system.””
Everyone looked around.
The meaning was obvious.
Someone connected to the house.
Someone who knew the security codes.
Someone close.
My father looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head immediately.
“It wasn’t me.””
Nobody responded.
Michael checked the screen.
“There’s more.””
He opened another file.
A recording from three months earlier.
The room went quiet.
The video showed my father’s office.
Vanessa was inside.
But she wasn’t alone.
The same woman from the previous video was sitting across from her.
The woman placed a folder on the desk.
Vanessa opened it.
“What is this?””
The woman smiled.
“Your insurance.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Insurance?””
“Yes.””
She tapped the folder.
“Everything you need if Daniel ever turns against you.””
My father stepped closer.
“What is that?””
The video continued.
Vanessa pulled out several documents.
Then her face changed.
“No.””
The woman leaned forward.
“You wanted Daniel’s attention.””
Vanessa stared at the papers.
“I didn’t know you would go this far.””
The woman smiled.
“You said you wanted Lily gone.””
My father’s face turned pale.
I felt my fingers go cold.
Gone?
The word echoed in my head.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, that’s not what I meant.””
But nobody heard her.
The video continued.
The woman said:
“You don’t have to worry. Nobody will suspect you.””
Vanessa looked frightened.
“What if someone finds out?””
The woman leaned back.
“Then we use the documents.””
My father looked at Michael.
“What documents?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Because on the video, Vanessa opened the folder again.
And the camera zoomed in.
Everyone stared.
There were papers.
Legal documents.
A photograph.
And one name.
My name.
My father’s hand covered his mouth.
Because the documents were about me.
Not the vase.
Not the punishment.
Me.
The video suddenly stopped.
A notification appeared.
*FILE DELETED.*
Michael tried to recover it.
But the screen went blank.
Someone had erased the evidence.
Someone was still controlling the system.
My father turned slowly.
The entire room felt different now.
Because the truth about the vase was only the beginning.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What were you planning to do with my daughter?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She just stood there crying.
Then the front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman’s voice came from the entrance.
“Daniel?””
My father froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
The woman from the security footage stepped into the mansion.
She looked at the room full of shocked faces.
Then her eyes landed on Vanessa.
May you like
And she smiled.
“Looks like you finally found out.””
