Chapter 4: The Name on the Secret Document
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.
My name sat beneath the heading *Beneficial Ownership and Transfer Authorization*, typed in black letters beside a series of figures that seemed to grow larger the longer I stared at them.
Adrian held his phone between us.
“Claire, what is this?””
“I've never seen that document before.””
“Your name is on it.””
“I can read, Adrian.””
The sharpness in my voice surprised both of us. Mia was sitting at the birthday table, quietly picking at the frosting on her cake while Rachel helped remove the stained decorations. I lowered my voice.
“Please don't do this here.””
“Do what? Ask you why your name is on a document that was downloaded from my private account?””
“I'm asking you to give me a chance to explain something I don't understand myself.””
He looked back at the screen.
The contract concerned a company called Northbridge Holdings, a business that had approached Adrian's firm about a major acquisition. He had spent six months negotiating the deal. If it closed, it would become the largest transaction of his career.
I knew the broad details because Adrian talked about work at dinner, but I had never seen the confidential paperwork.
Now, according to the document on his phone, I was listed as the proposed recipient of a transfer involving a substantial block of shares.
Beneath my name was an electronic signature.
It looked like mine.
Almost.
My stomach tightened.
“Adrian, I didn't sign that.””
He zoomed in on the signature.
“It's your signature.””
“No, it's a copy of my signature.””
He looked up sharply.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone could have taken it from another document. You know I've signed things for the house, the mortgage, school forms. My signature isn't a secret.””
His jaw tightened.
“Why would anyone use it?””
“I don't know!””
My voice carried farther than I intended. Mia looked up from the cake.
I immediately forced myself to smile at her.
“Everything's okay, sweetheart. Daddy and I just need to talk for a minute.””
She nodded, although the worried expression on her face told me she didn't believe me.
Adrian moved toward the windows overlooking the golf course.
I followed him.
“Look at me,” I said.
“You know me. Have I ever asked you to hide money or transfer your company's shares?””
“No.””
“Have I ever asked for access to your confidential files?””
“No.””
“Then why are you looking at me as if I'm a stranger?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Because the document came from my account, Claire. And now Vanessa is telling me you've been hiding something.””
“Vanessa just poured punch over our daughter's dress and blamed Mia for it. She was caught on video. Why would you believe anything she says?””
“I'm not saying I believe her.””
“But you suspect me.””
He didn't answer.
That silence hurt more than an accusation.
I had spent twelve years building a life with Adrian. I had been there when he left a comfortable job to start his own company. I had watched him work through weekends, miss holidays, and sit awake at three in the morning worrying about payroll.
I had never resented his ambition.
I had supported it.
And now, after one carefully placed document, he was wondering whether I had betrayed him.
“Check the access logs,” I said.
He frowned.
“What?””
“Your company's IT department can tell you who accessed the files. Don't guess. Don't accuse me. Find out.””
Adrian stared at the document again.
Then he nodded once.
“I'm calling Daniel.””
I stiffened.
“Daniel? The attorney who messaged Vanessa?””
He looked at me.
“You saw that?””
“Everyone saw it. The message was on her screen.””
Adrian walked away to make the call.
I watched him move toward the far end of the hall, speaking quietly into his phone. His posture was rigid, his free hand pressed against his hip.
I turned toward Mia.
She had stopped eating.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “is Daddy mad because of me?””
I crossed the room immediately.
“No, baby.””
“But Aunt Vanessa said I made her do it.””
I knelt beside her chair.
“Your aunt chose to pour that drink. You didn't make her do anything.””
“Then why is everyone fighting?””
Because adults sometimes made terrible choices and expected children to carry the consequences.
Because the people who should have protected her had spent too long excusing someone else's behavior.
Because I had no idea how to explain that her birthday had uncovered something much uglier than a ruined dress.
I cupped her face.
“Listen to me. Nothing that happened today is your fault. Not the dress, not the argument, and not whatever Daddy and I are trying to understand.””
Mia nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on Adrian.
I wished I could give her certainty.
Instead, I gave her a slice of cake and promised that we would finish the birthday celebration at home.
When I returned to Adrian, he was ending his call.
“What did Daniel say?”” I asked.
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
“He says the document may be part of a proposed restructuring.””
“May be?””
“He wants to review the original files before making any conclusions.””
“Then let him review them.””
Adrian hesitated.
“There is something else.””
I waited.
“Daniel said Vanessa contacted him two weeks ago.””
My skin prickled.
“About what?””
“She asked whether a family member could legally receive shares in a company without appearing in the initial ownership disclosures.””
I stared at him.
“And he didn't think to tell you?””
“He says he assumed she was asking a hypothetical question.””
“Did she mention me?””
“He doesn't know.””
I let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“Your sister is asking a lawyer how to conceal a share transfer, your confidential documents are being accessed, and a forged signature appears on a transfer authorization bearing my name. Adrian, what exactly are we waiting to discover?””
He looked away.
For the first time, I saw something other than suspicion in his expression.
Fear.
Not fear of me.
Fear that someone close to him had been planning something he couldn't yet comprehend.
“I need to get the original file,” he said.
“Then go.””
He looked surprised.
“You're not coming with me?””
“Mia's birthday isn't over.””
“Claire—”
“She has spent the last hour believing she's ruined everything. I'm not leaving her alone at a birthday table while the adults who failed her go chasing documents.””
Adrian looked toward our daughter.
Mia was carefully arranging her cake decorations into a little circle. She had put the golden sugar stars in the middle, as though trying to make something beautiful out of the pieces left behind.
His shoulders dropped.
“You're right.””
He sat beside her and helped arrange the stars.
For ten minutes, we pretended the world was normal.
Mia blew out her candles.
Adrian sang off-key.
I took photographs of our daughter smiling in a borrowed cardigan, her ruined dress hidden beneath the table.
For those ten minutes, I wanted to believe that the day could still be saved.
Then Adrian's phone rang again.
This time, it was his company's security director.
He listened without speaking.
His face grew paler with every passing second.
Finally, he asked, “Are you certain?””
A pause.
“Send me the report.””
He ended the call and stared at the screen.
“What happened?”” I asked.
“The files weren't accessed through my office computer.””
“Then where?””
“Someone used my executive credentials remotely.””
“Can they identify the person?””
“They've traced the session to an external device.””
He looked at me.
“And the recovery report shows that the transfer authorization was modified yesterday.””
My heart thudded.
“By whom?””
Adrian shook his head.
“They're still checking.””
Then another notification appeared.
A photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside our house three nights earlier, holding a thick blue folder beneath her arm.
I recognized the folder immediately.
It belonged to Adrian's office.
But the message attached to the photograph was what made my blood run cold.
*We found this in the building's visitor log. The person who signed Vanessa in used your wife's identification details.*
Adrian slowly raised his eyes to mine.
I couldn't speak.
Because three nights earlier, I had been home with Mia.
And I could prove it.
May you like
But someone had apparently gone into Adrian's office pretending to be me.
And that person had left with the documents now threatening to destroy our family.
