Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile
Adrian caught Vanessa's wrist before she could grab his phone.
“Don't,” he warned.
She yanked her arm away.
“Give me that!””
“You said Mia did something before the video started. What are you talking about?””
“Nothing!””
“Then why are you trying to take my phone?””
Vanessa glanced around the hall. Her gaze darted from Rachel to Robert, then to the guests who had begun quietly recording the confrontation themselves.
She was losing control of the room.
And she knew it.
“Adrian, this is a private family matter,” she said, suddenly lowering her voice.
“We can discuss it at home.””
“No. You wanted everyone to watch Mia being humiliated. Now everyone can hear your explanation.””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
I knelt beside Mia.
“Sweetheart, you don't have to say anything you're not comfortable saying.””
Mia rubbed her damp cheeks with the backs of her hands.
“But Aunt Vanessa says I did something bad.””
“That's not what matters right now.””
“She said Daddy would be angry.””
Adrian immediately crouched beside us.
“Angry with whom?””
Mia looked down.
“With me.””
He took her hand.
“I could never be angry with you for telling me the truth.””
Vanessa made an impatient noise.
“This is exactly what I mean. Everyone treats her like she's made of glass.””
Robert stood up from his chair.
“Enough, Vanessa.””
She swung toward him.
“Dad, please don't start.””
“No. I've spent years letting you speak to people however you like because I thought you would grow out of it. But you're standing in front of your niece, blaming her for something we all watched you do.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what she's been saying about me!””
“Then tell us.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched Mia struggle with something she was too frightened to explain. Her birthday crown had slipped sideways in her curls. Red punch stained the hem of her gown, and a small wet patch had soaked through one of her white shoes.
She looked impossibly young.
I wanted to carry her out of the room and never let her see Vanessa again.
But something told me Mia needed to be heard.
Not because an eight-year-old should have to defend herself against an adult.
Because she deserved to learn that the truth would not be buried simply because someone powerful wanted it buried.
I brushed a curl away from her cheek.
“Take your time, sweetheart.””
Mia nodded.
Then she looked directly at her aunt.
“I went to get my birthday cards.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
I frowned.
“Your birthday cards?””
Mia nodded again.
“The ones on the table near the kitchen. Aunt Vanessa was there, and her phone was on the chair.””
Vanessa took a sharp step forward.
“Mia, stop talking.””
Adrian stood immediately.
“Don't you dare.””
Mia flinched, and Adrian softened his voice.
“Keep going, princess. I'm listening.””
She swallowed.
“I thought Aunt Vanessa had left her phone. I wanted to give it to her, so I picked it up.””
Vanessa shook her head furiously.
“She was snooping!””
“I wasn't!”” Mia cried.
“Vanessa,” I said, “let her finish.””
Mia's voice trembled.
“When I picked up the phone, a picture was on the screen. It was a picture of Daddy's papers.””
Adrian went still.
“What papers?””
“The ones you keep in your office. The papers with the blue folder.””
His expression changed so subtly that I might have missed it if I hadn't known him for twelve years.
“What did the picture show, sweetheart?””
Mia wiped her nose on her sleeve.
“It had your name on it. And a lot of numbers.””
Vanessa's handbag slipped from her shoulder and hit the floor.
A lipstick rolled beneath the table.
She didn't bend to pick it up.
Adrian stared at her.
“Why do you have photographs of my business documents?””
“I don't.””
“Mia just said—”
“She doesn't understand what she saw!””
Mia's eyes widened.
“I do understand!””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You picked up my phone without permission!””
“I was trying to give it back!””
“And you looked through my private things!””
“I didn't mean to!””
Vanessa turned toward the guests.
“See? This is what happens when children aren't taught boundaries. She takes people's belongings and then everyone blames me when something goes wrong.””
I felt something cold settle inside me.
There it was again.
The same trick.
Take an innocent act, twist it into a crime, and attack the person who tries to explain.
But this time, Adrian wasn't looking at his daughter with confusion.
He was looking at his sister.
“Show me your phone,” he said.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Absolutely not.””
“Then unlock it.””
“You cannot be serious.””
“Those documents are confidential. If you have pictures of them, I need to know why.””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag from the floor.
“I don't owe you an explanation.””
She turned toward the exit.
Adrian stepped into her path.
“Not until you answer my question.””
“Move.””
“Did you photograph documents from my office?””
“No!””
“Then show me your phone.””
Her eyes filled with furious tears.
“You're humiliating me in front of everyone!””
I almost laughed at the absurdity of it.
Mia stood nearby in a ruined dress, her birthday party shattered, and Vanessa was worried about being embarrassed.
Robert moved between them.
“Vanessa, give him the phone.””
She stared at their father as if he had betrayed her.
“You too?””
“Just show him.””
For a moment, I thought she might comply.
Then her phone vibrated.
The screen lit up.
Even from where I stood, I could see a message preview from a contact saved under the name *Daniel—Attorney*.
The message contained only one sentence.
*Did you get the final file? We need it before Monday.*
Adrian saw it.
So did Robert.
Vanessa immediately turned the screen facedown.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian held out his hand.
“Who is Daniel?””
Vanessa's face had become almost gray.
“It's work.””
“What work?””
“Adrian, please. Not here.””
“Who is Daniel?””
She looked at me, and for the first time that afternoon, I saw something that resembled desperation.
“Claire, tell him to stop.””
I stared at her.
“You poured red punch on my daughter's dress and accused her of doing it. You don't get to ask me for protection now.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at Adrian again.
He didn't move his hand.
Finally, she whispered, “Daniel is helping me with a business opportunity.””
“What business opportunity?””
“It's complicated.””
“Then start with the simple part.””
Vanessa looked down at her phone.
For a moment, I thought she would tell him everything.
Instead, she pressed the screen, locked it, and slipped it into her handbag.
“I won't discuss this in front of strangers.””
Robert's voice turned icy.
“Those strangers were invited to Mia's birthday. You are the one who turned this into a public spectacle.””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Then she lifted her chin.
“Fine. You want the truth? Adrian, your wife has been lying to you.””
My heart lurched.
Adrian didn't even blink.
“About what?””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“Ask her why she insisted on having this party at Willow Creek. Ask her why she wanted everyone here today. Ask her what she's been planning behind your back.””
I stared at her in disbelief.
“This party was for our daughter.””
“That's what you want him to believe.””
Adrian stepped between us.
“Enough. You will not drag Claire into your mess to distract me from those documents.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You'll regret taking her side.””
“I'm taking my daughter's side.””
“And when you find out what your wife has been hiding, don't come crying to me.””
She brushed past him and marched toward the doors.
No one tried to stop her.
At the entrance, she paused and looked back at Mia.
“I hope you're happy with yourself.””
Mia shrank against my side.
Adrian took one step toward his sister.
“If you speak to my daughter like that again, you'll never see her without my permission.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
Then she left.
The doors slammed behind her.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The projector still displayed the frozen image of Vanessa pouring punch over Mia's dress.
Rachel finally reached the technician and asked him to shut down the feed. The screen went black.
But the damage was already done.
Guests began approaching us, offering apologies and awkward reassurances. One woman gave Mia a soft pink cardigan to cover the stained gown. Another brought her a glass of water.
Mia accepted the cardigan without speaking.
When the crowd thinned, Adrian knelt in front of her again.
“I'm sorry, princess.””
She looked at him.
“Are you mad at Aunt Vanessa?””
He brushed a tear from her cheek.
“I'm disappointed in her.””
“Are you mad at me?””
His face crumpled.
“No. Never.””
Mia studied him for a moment.
“Can we still have cake?””
The question broke whatever composure I had left.
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
Adrian pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“We're going to have cake.””
He looked at me over her shoulder.
“Even if it's just the three of us.””
But as I watched my husband carry our daughter toward the birthday table, I couldn't stop thinking about Vanessa's final accusation.
Ask her what she's been planning behind your back.
I knew I hadn't done anything wrong.
At least, I thought I knew.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
He looked down at the screen.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned the phone toward me.
An email had just arrived from his company's legal department. The subject line read:
*URGENT: Unauthorized Access to Confidential Acquisition Files.*
Below it was a list of documents that had been downloaded from his private office account.
One of them was the final contract for the acquisition Adrian had been negotiating for six months.
Another was a confidential financial report.
The third was a document I had never seen before.
*Beneficial Ownership and Transfer Authorization.*
Adrian opened the attachment.
His fingers went completely still.
May you like
Then he looked up at me, his face stripped of color.
“Claire,” he whispered, “why is your name on this?””
