Chapter 2: The Screen Told the Truth

For three seconds, the only sound in the hall was the faint electronic hum of the projector.

Then someone near the back whispered, “She did it on purpose.””

The words traveled farther than a shout.

Vanessa spun toward the screen.

“Turn that off!””

Nobody moved.

On the giant display, the footage continued.

Rachel's phone had captured everything from a slightly elevated angle. The camera showed Vanessa checking the room before stepping toward Mia. It showed her glancing toward the main entrance, where Adrian had disappeared minutes earlier.

Then came the part that made my stomach twist.

Vanessa looked directly at Mia.

She said something Rachel's microphone caught clearly.

“Let's see how perfect you look after this.””

A second later, she poured the punch.

The room erupted.

“Oh, my God!””

“Did she actually say that?””

“She planned it!””

Adrian stood motionless, staring at the screen.

His sister had spent years telling him that I was dramatic, that Mia was spoiled, and that every disagreement in our family somehow began with me.

But there was no dramatic interpretation that could save her now.

The video showed the truth in high definition.

Vanessa marched toward the projector table, her heels striking the floor.

“Stop playing that!”” she screamed.

“Rachel, turn it off right now!””

Rachel stepped back, keeping her phone raised.

“I'm not the one controlling the projector.””

“Then find whoever is!””

“I didn't even know it was connected to the big screen.””

That was true. The venue's audiovisual technician had set up the projector to receive the party's shared photo feed. When Rachel's live stream was selected for the birthday montage, the feed had automatically mirrored onto the display.

No one had intended to broadcast Vanessa's cruelty.

But no one could deny what they had just seen.

Adrian finally moved.

He approached his sister slowly, his expression so controlled that I knew he was fighting to keep his temper in check.

“Vanessa,” he said, “tell me that video is fake.””

She stared at him.

“It was taken out of context.””

“What context?””

“She was being disrespectful!””

“She was carrying lemonade.””

“She knows how to push my buttons!””

Adrian blinked.

“You poured a drink on an eight-year-old because she annoyed you?””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“Don't make me sound like a monster.””

“You did that yourself.””

The words landed hard.

Vanessa looked around for support. Her gaze stopped on their father, Robert, who sat near the head table in a charcoal suit.

“Dad,” she pleaded, “you know how Mia behaves. She's always trying to get attention.””

Robert slowly removed his glasses.

“I watched the same video you did.””

“She bumped me!””

“No,” he said.

“She didn't.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Robert had always been protective of his daughter. When she forgot birthdays, he made excuses. When she insulted waitstaff, he called her demanding. When she borrowed money and failed to repay it, he quietly covered the debt.

But even he looked shaken now.

“You humiliated a child,” he said.

“At her birthday party.””

Vanessa threw her hands up.

“This is unbelievable! Everyone is acting like I committed a crime over a stupid dress!””

Mia flinched at the word stupid.

Adrian noticed.

He immediately turned away from his sister and crouched beside our daughter.

“Hey, princess.””

Mia stared at him through tears.

“Daddy, I didn't spill it.””

“I know.””

“I didn't touch Aunt Vanessa.””

“I saw the video, sweetheart.””

“Is she mad at me?””

Adrian's face changed.

He took Mia's small hands in his.

“No. You don't have to worry about whether she's mad. You didn't do anything wrong.””

“But she said I did.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked at me.

I saw the pain in his eyes. He was finally seeing what I had been trying to tell him for years: Vanessa's cruelty wasn't harmless teasing, and our daughter's innocence wouldn't protect her from it.

He swallowed hard.

“Sometimes grown-ups do things they should be ashamed of,” he told Mia.

“That doesn't mean you caused them.””

Mia threw her arms around his neck.

Adrian held her close, one hand protecting the back of her head.

For a moment, I thought the worst was over.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“You're choosing them over me?””

Adrian didn't look up.

“I'm choosing the truth.””

“I'm your sister!””

“And she's my daughter!””

His voice cracked across the hall.

Several guests turned away, suddenly uncomfortable to be witnessing a family argument that had gone far beyond a ruined dress.

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

“You have no idea what Claire has been saying about me behind my back.””

I rose slowly.

“Don't drag me into this.””

“You've wanted to turn Adrian against me for years!””

“No,” I replied.

“I've wanted you to stop hurting people and calling it a joke.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You always play the victim.””

I glanced at the screen.

The footage had paused on the exact moment Vanessa tipped the glass.

“No,” I said.

“Today, Mia is the victim. And everyone here knows why.””

A few guests murmured in agreement.

Vanessa looked around the room again, and this time the faces staring back at her were different. Her usual audience had become a jury.

She grabbed a napkin from the nearest table and pressed it against the front of her dress, although there wasn't a single drop of punch on it.

“I hope you're all happy,” she announced.

“You've ruined my life over nothing.””

Rachel lowered her phone slightly.

“Vanessa, you ruined Mia's dress. Nobody forced you to do that.””

“Stay out of this!””

“I was standing right there.””

“And you filmed me without my permission!””

Rachel looked stunned.

“You've been posing for people's cameras all afternoon.””

“That is completely different!””

“How?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Instead, she turned to Adrian.

“You need to fix this. Tell everyone it was an accident.””

Adrian rose to his full height.

“I'm not lying for you.””

“Then you're dead to me.””

He stared at her for a long moment.

“If that's what it takes to protect my daughter, so be it.””

The silence that followed was heavier than before.

Vanessa looked as though he had struck her.

Then her expression hardened.

“Fine. If we're doing this in public, let's do it properly.””

She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out her phone.

I watched her fingers move across the screen.

“Who are you calling?”” I demanded.

“Someone who can explain what really happened.””

Adrian stepped toward her.

“There is nothing to explain.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Oh, really? Then perhaps everyone should know why Mia was standing next to me in the first place.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Vanessa smiled without warmth.

“Ask your daughter what she did before you walked over.””

Mia stiffened against Adrian's side.

I immediately moved closer to her.

“Don't you dare question her.””

“I'm not questioning her, Claire. I'm telling you that the video doesn't show everything.””

Rachel frowned.

“It shows you pouring the drink.””

“And what happened before the recording started?””

Adrian glanced toward the screen.

The footage had begun only a few minutes earlier, when Rachel had started filming the children around the drinks table. It didn't show what had happened before that.

Vanessa noticed the uncertainty spreading through the room.

Her shoulders straightened.

“Exactly,” she said.

“You all saw thirty seconds and decided I'm evil. Maybe you should find out what that little girl was doing before you start judging me.””

Mia's fingers tightened around Adrian's jacket.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

He bent toward her.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She looked at Vanessa, then at me.

“I didn't want anyone to know.””

My heart began to pound.

“Know what, baby?””

Mia's eyes filled with fresh tears.

Vanessa's smile widened.

“Go on, Mia. Tell them.””

I stepped between them.

“You are not going to intimidate my child.””

But Mia had already begun shaking.

“It was an accident,” she whispered.

“I didn't mean to see it.””

Adrian's face changed.

“See what?””

Mia looked toward the head table, where Vanessa's handbag had been resting earlier that afternoon.

Then she pointed at her aunt's phone.

“The pictures,” she said.

“The pictures Aunt Vanessa took.””

Vanessa stopped smiling.

For the first time since the party began, she looked genuinely frightened.

And when Adrian asked what pictures Mia was talking about, Vanessa lunged toward the phone in his hand.
