Chapter 9: The Man Who Came Back from the Dead
The private airport was nearly deserted when Nathaniel's convoy arrived.
A cold wind swept across the runway.
Beyond the hangars, a black private jet sat beneath the floodlights.
Its engines were still running.
Nathaniel stepped out of the SUV.
Marcus approached immediately.
"Police units are two minutes away. I've also notified federal investigators about the Meridian recordings.""
"Good.""
Daniel stood beside Rose.
He looked pale.
"Are you sure you want to do this?""
Nathaniel glanced at him.
"I've spent thirty-two years waiting for my father to tell me the truth.""
He looked toward the aircraft.
"I'm not leaving until he does.""
Rose adjusted her coat.
"And I'm not leaving without answers about my mother.""
Thomas remained at the estate under Marcus's secondary security team.
He had wanted to come, but his doctors had refused to release him.
Before they left, he had given Rose the wooden airplane.
"Tell him I want to meet him," Thomas had said.
Rose had promised.
Now she held the little airplane tightly in her pocket.
A staircase descended from the jet.
A man appeared at the top.
Silver hair.
Dark overcoat.
One hand resting on the railing.
Nathaniel stopped breathing.
Richard Callaway.
His father.
Alive.
The man descended slowly.
When his shoes touched the runway, he looked directly at Nathaniel.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Richard smiled.
"Hello, son.""
Nathaniel felt something inside him break.
"Don't call me that.""
Richard's smile faded.
"I understand.""
"No, you don't.""
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"You don't get to disappear for eleven years, let your wife bury you, let your son grow up believing he was abandoned, and then walk back into my life like you're returning from a business trip.""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"You don't know anything.""
Daniel moved forward.
"Richard.""
Richard looked at him.
"Daniel.""
The two men stood facing each other.
Old friends.
Old enemies.
Two men who had allowed a woman and two children to pay for their mistakes.
Richard finally spoke.
"You came back.""
Daniel's voice was cold.
"Because you left us no choice.""
Richard nodded.
"Fair enough.""
Nathaniel looked between them.
"Enough. I want the truth.""
Richard gestured toward the hangar.
"Inside.""
Nathaniel didn't move.
"Here.""
Richard sighed.
"Very well.""
He looked at Rose.
"Margaret's daughter.""
Rose stiffened.
"You knew my mother?""
Richard nodded.
"She was one of the bravest people I've ever known.""
"Then why did she die alone?""
Richard's expression changed.
"Because I failed her.""
Rose's eyes filled.
"Did you kill her?""
"No.""
"Did you know she was in danger?""
Richard looked away.
"Yes.""
The answer struck harder than a denial.
Rose stepped forward.
"Then you let her die.""
Richard lowered his head.
"Yes.""
Nathaniel stared at the man.
For the first time, he understood that the truth would not necessarily bring relief.
Sometimes it simply gave pain a name.
Inside the hangar, Richard sat at a metal table.
Nathaniel remained standing.
Daniel leaned against a support beam.
Rose sat opposite Richard.
"You have five minutes," Nathaniel said.
Richard looked at him.
"Eleven years of secrets won't fit into five minutes.""
"Then speak quickly.""
Richard folded his hands.
"Arthur Sterling and I built Meridian together. We started with legitimate investments. Defense contracts, infrastructure, international logistics.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Then you started laundering money.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
"And using shell companies to hide illegal procurement deals.""
"Yes.""
Nathaniel's expression hardened.
"Why?""
Richard looked at his son.
"Because I wanted more.""
The simplicity of the answer was almost unbearable.
"I wanted the company to become untouchable. I wanted political influence. I wanted to control the markets we entered. Arthur promised that the money would eventually make us powerful enough to protect our families.""
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"And when you discovered what he was doing?""
"I tried to stop.""
"After how many people had already been hurt?""
Richard looked down.
"I can't change that.""
Nathaniel approached the table.
"What happened to Daniel?""
Richard glanced at him.
"Arthur arranged the aircraft accident. The plane was supposed to explode over the Atlantic.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"But it didn't.""
"No. Margaret warned me at the last moment. We switched aircraft. I disappeared under another identity.""
Nathaniel stared.
"You let everyone believe Daniel was dead?""
"I had to.""
"Why?""
"Because Arthur had people inside the police, the courts, and our company. If he believed Daniel was dead, he would stop looking for him.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You could have told Eleanor.""
"I couldn't risk it.""
"You could have told your sons.""
Richard's voice cracked.
"I was trying to keep them alive.""
Rose leaned forward.
"And my mother?""
Richard looked at her.
"Margaret discovered the original Meridian ledger. She knew Arthur had arranged the murder of two financial investigators who were preparing to testify.""
"She could have gone to the police.""
"Arthur controlled the local authorities.""
"So you left her?""
Richard closed his eyes.
"I arranged for her to disappear. I sent money. I gave her a new identity.""
Rose shook her head.
"She never received it.""
Richard looked up sharply.
"What?""
"My mother lived in the same apartment for eleven years. She worked three jobs. She raised me alone.""
Richard's face went white.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Sterling intercepted the payments.""
Richard slowly sat back.
"Then he knew where she was.""
Rose stared at him.
"He knew all along.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Nathaniel asked the question that had been burning inside him.
"Why did you let Eleanor believe you were dead?""
Richard looked toward the hangar doors.
"Because Arthur threatened to kill you if I returned.""
"And you believed him?""
"I saw what he was capable of.""
Nathaniel's voice grew cold.
"So you left me with him.""
Richard frowned.
"What?""
"Victoria. You allowed her into my life.""
Richard looked genuinely confused.
"Victoria?""
Nathaniel laughed bitterly.
"She married me. She tried to kill my mother. She imprisoned Thomas. She has been working with Arthur for months.""
Richard's expression changed.
"Then the plan has already begun.""
Daniel stepped away from the wall.
"What plan?""
Richard looked at Nathaniel.
"The merger.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"What merger?""
"Arthur intends to combine Sterling Defense with the Callaway operating company. Victoria was supposed to secure your marriage, obtain your voting rights, and transfer the Meridian assets into a new holding structure.""
Nathaniel stared.
"She never loved me.""
Richard didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
A loud metallic bang echoed outside.
Marcus entered the hangar.
"Mr. Callaway, we have a situation.""
Nathaniel turned.
"What?""
"Three vehicles just entered the airport perimeter. They're not police.""
Daniel reached for his weapon.
"Sterling's people.""
Marcus nodded.
"Security footage shows at least eight armed men.""
Richard stood abruptly.
"Where's the nearest exit?""
Marcus pointed toward the rear hangar door.
"Two hundred yards.""
Richard grabbed Nathaniel's arm.
"We need to move.""
Nathaniel pulled away.
"Not until you finish.""
"Your life is in danger.""
"My entire life has been in danger because of you.""
A burst of gunfire shattered the windows.
Marcus shouted.
"Down!""
Everyone dropped behind the table.
Glass scattered across the concrete.
Rose covered her head.
Daniel crawled toward the side entrance.
Marcus drew his weapon.
"Mr. Callaway, we need to evacuate!""
Nathaniel looked toward the runway.
A black SUV had stopped beside the jet.
A woman stepped out.
Victoria.
She was wearing a long black coat, her hair pulled into a tight knot.
She held a phone to her ear.
Then she looked directly toward the hangar.
Even from a distance, Nathaniel could see her smile.
"She's here," he whispered.
Richard's face hardened.
"Arthur wouldn't send her.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because Victoria isn't working for Arthur.""
Nathaniel turned.
"What are you talking about?""
Richard reached inside his coat and removed a small envelope.
He placed it in Nathaniel's hand.
"Victoria is working for someone else.""
Nathaniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Victoria as a young woman standing beside a man in a military uniform.
On the back was a handwritten name.
*JAMES CALLAWAY.*
Eleanor's supposedly dead brother.
Nathaniel stared.
"Who is this man?""
Richard looked at him.
"Victoria's biological father.""
Daniel went still.
"Arthur Sterling isn't her father?""
Richard shook his head.
"No. Arthur raised her after James disappeared. He used the Sterling name to hide her identity.""
Nathaniel looked toward the runway.
Victoria was approaching the hangar.
"Why would she want the Callaway fortune?""
Richard's expression turned grim.
"Because James Callaway was the original architect of Meridian.""
Nathaniel's mind raced.
"Eleanor's brother?""
"Yes.""
"But he died twenty years ago.""
Richard shook his head.
"His death was staged.""
A sudden voice came from the hangar entrance.
"That's enough, Richard.""
Victoria stood in the doorway.
Two armed men flanked her.
Behind them was Arthur Sterling.
And behind Arthur stood another man.
Older.
Tall.
With a scar across his left hand.
The man Rose had heard about in her mother's recording.
James Callaway.
Victoria smiled.
"Family reunions are always so emotional.""
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"Who are you?""
Victoria looked at him.
"My real name is Victoria James.""
She glanced at the older man.
"And this is the man who should have inherited the Callaway family.""
James stepped into the light.
"Hello, nephew.""
Nathaniel's blood ran cold.
Richard moved in front of him.
"Stay back.""
James laughed.
"You've spent eleven years hiding from me, Richard. Did you really think I'd let you keep the company?""
Nathaniel looked at his father.
Then at James.
Then at Victoria.
The woman he had married had been hiding her real identity.
The man who had supposedly died twenty years earlier was standing in front of him.
And the entire Callaway fortune had been built on a family secret older than Nathaniel himself.
Victoria raised her phone.
"There's just one final document to sign.""
She held up a folder.
"The transfer of the Meridian Trust.""
Nathaniel shook his head.
"Never.""
Victoria smiled.
"Then perhaps you'll sign after you see who's waiting outside.""
She stepped aside.
Two men dragged a woman into the hangar.
Her silver hair was disheveled.
Her face was bruised.
Her walking cane had fallen to the floor.
Eleanor.
Rose gasped.
"Mrs. Callaway!""
Nathaniel lunged forward, but Marcus grabbed his arm.
James raised a weapon.
"One more step, Nathaniel, and your mother dies.""
Eleanor lifted her head.
Her eyes found Nathaniel's.
Then she spoke.
"Don't give them the trust.""
Victoria laughed.
"Still stubborn, aren't you?""
Eleanor ignored her.
Instead, she looked directly at Daniel.
"Tell him.""
Daniel frowned.
"Eleanor...""
"Tell Nathaniel what happened to James.""
James's smile disappeared.
Richard slowly turned toward his brother-in-law.
And for the first time that night, fear appeared in the older man's eyes.
Eleanor continued.
"Tell him why you killed your own brother.""
James raised his weapon.
"Shut her up!""
But Eleanor had already spoken.
"Because James Callaway isn't Victoria's father.""
She looked at Nathaniel.
"He's her brother.""
Silence swallowed the hangar.
Victoria's face twisted.
Then Eleanor delivered the final revelation.
"Victoria Sterling is not your enemy because she wants the Callaway fortune, Nathaniel.""
May you like
She took a trembling breath.
"She's your sister.""
