Chapter 3: The Wife Who Knew Too Much
By sunrise, Nathaniel had stopped believing in coincidences.
He stood inside his father's former executive office, thirty floors above Manhattan.
The city outside was turning gold beneath the first morning light.
A half-empty glass of bourbon sat untouched on the desk.
On the wall hung a photograph of Richard Callaway, smiling beside a younger Nathaniel at the opening of the company's first European headquarters.
Nathaniel stared at it.
His father had been a difficult man.
Brilliant.
Demanding.
Sometimes cruel.
But he had never been a ghost.
At least, not until tonight.
"Sir?""
Marcus entered carrying two folders.
"Security has completed the preliminary sweep.""
"Find anything?""
"Three things.""
Nathaniel turned.
"Start with the worst.""
Marcus placed the first folder on the desk.
"Someone accessed your mother's medication records six weeks ago.""
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?""
"An external account registered to Sterling Medical Consulting.""
"Victoria's father's company?""
"Yes.""
"Was anything changed?""
Marcus hesitated.
"One prescription was altered. The dosage of her blood-pressure medication was increased beyond the level approved by Dr. Vance.""
Nathaniel's expression went cold.
"How long?""
"According to the pharmacy records, eleven days.""
"Has the doctor confirmed the change?""
"Yes. He says the higher dosage could have caused dizziness and fainting.""
Nathaniel stared at the folder.
Victoria had known his mother was recovering from a stroke.
She had known Eleanor's balance was fragile.
And she had increased the medication that could make her fall.
"Get the prescription records to Detective Hayes.""
"Already done.""
"Second thing.""
Marcus opened the next folder.
"We found a security breach in the private archive beneath the east wing.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"What archive?""
"Your father's personal document vault.""
"I thought it was sealed.""
"It was.""
"Who opened it?""
Marcus placed a photograph on the desk.
A woman stood in front of a secure access panel.
Her face was partially hidden beneath a black scarf.
Nathaniel recognized the wedding dress.
Victoria.
"She was in the archive?""
"Three nights ago.""
Nathaniel looked up.
"Why wasn't I informed?""
"The system registered her access as an authorized family credential. Nobody flagged it.""
"Who gave her the credential?""
Marcus shook his head.
"We're still investigating.""
Nathaniel walked toward the window.
Victoria had not merely married him.
She had been moving through his father's private records while preparing to become his wife.
"What's the third thing?""
Marcus hesitated.
"We found an audio file.""
"Where?""
"Inside the archive.""
"Play it.""
Marcus connected the tablet to the office speakers.
A low hiss filled the room.
Then a man's voice emerged.
Older.
Rougher.
But unmistakably familiar.
"Richard, if you're hearing this, it means I've failed to reach you.""
Nathaniel stopped breathing.
Daniel Mercer.
The recording continued.
"Your accounts are being used. The Sterling family knows about the Meridian fund. They have someone inside your household.""
A pause.
Then:
"Do not trust the woman you bring into your home.""
The recording ended.
Nathaniel stared at the tablet.
"How old is that file?""
"Eleven years.""
"Who recorded it?""
"Daniel Mercer.""
Nathaniel lowered himself into his father's chair.
The room suddenly felt too large.
"Marcus, I want every document in that archive reviewed. Every transaction. Every name. I don't care how long it takes.""
"Yes, sir.""
"And find Peter Lang.""
"We're working on it.""
"Don't work on it. Find him.""
Marcus nodded and left.
Nathaniel remained motionless for several minutes.
Then he picked up his phone.
A message had arrived from Detective Hayes.
*VICTORIA STERLING HAS REQUESTED LEGAL COUNSEL. REFUSES TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.*
A second message followed.
*SHE HAS ALSO REQUESTED TO SPEAK WITH YOU PRIVATELY.*
Nathaniel read it twice.
Then he smiled without humor.
Of course she had.
At 8:30 a.m., Victoria sat in a private interview room at the precinct.
Her wedding dress had been replaced with a cream-colored designer suit.
Her hair was immaculate.
Her makeup had been repaired.
Even after spending the night under police supervision, she looked as though she were preparing for a magazine cover.
Nathaniel entered alone.
Victoria immediately stood.
"Darling.""
He didn't move.
"Sit down.""
Her expression flickered.
"You're angry. I understand that. But we need to talk without these people interfering.""
Nathaniel took the chair opposite her.
"We have nothing to discuss.""
Victoria reached across the table.
He pulled his hand away.
Her smile disappeared.
"Fine. Let's stop pretending.""
She folded her hands.
"Your mother has been sick for years. You know that. She's suspicious, confused, and increasingly difficult to manage.""
"Careful.""
"She was going to destroy our marriage.""
"How?""
"By making you choose between me and her.""
Nathaniel leaned forward.
"Did you change her medication?""
Victoria blinked.
"What?""
"Her blood-pressure prescription. Did you authorize an increase?""
A brief silence.
Then she laughed.
"That's ridiculous.""
"Answer the question.""
"I don't manage her medication.""
"Your father's company did.""
"Then speak to my father.""
"I intend to.""
Victoria's jaw tightened.
Nathaniel placed a photograph on the table.
It showed her entering the archive beneath the east wing.
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But he saw it.
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it matter?""
"I had permission.""
"From whom?""
Victoria said nothing.
Nathaniel placed another photograph beside it.
This one showed Peter Lang.
"Do you know this man?""
Victoria glanced at the image.
"No.""
"Interesting. Because he delivered an envelope to you last night.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Nathaniel leaned back.
"Then perhaps you can explain why the envelope came from an account registered to my dead father's company.""
Victoria's face went still.
For the first time since Nathaniel had met her, she seemed genuinely afraid.
Then she recovered.
"You're making a mistake.""
"Am I?""
"Your father was not the man you think he was.""
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
"Explain.""
Victoria looked toward the glass wall.
Then back at him.
"Richard Callaway stole money from Daniel Mercer. He used your mother's name to hide the transfers. And when Daniel threatened to expose him, your father arranged for him to disappear.""
Nathaniel felt his hands tighten.
"You're lying.""
"Ask your mother.""
"I did.""
Victoria smiled faintly.
"Then you already know.""
Nathaniel stood.
"What does the Sterling family have to do with this?""
Victoria's eyes followed him.
"My father tried to help Richard clean up the mess. That's all.""
"By increasing my mother's medication?""
"I had nothing to do with that.""
"By entering my father's archive?""
"I was looking for evidence.""
"Evidence of what?""
Victoria rose.
"That your family is not innocent.""
Nathaniel moved toward the door.
Behind him, Victoria spoke again.
"You should be asking why Rose Bennett has that key.""
He stopped.
Slowly, he turned.
"What do you know about Rose?""
Victoria's expression softened into something almost sympathetic.
"More than you do.""
Nathaniel stared at her.
"Explain.""
"Her mother wasn't just Daniel Mercer's housekeeper.""
Victoria leaned forward.
"She was the woman who helped him steal the Callaway fortune.""
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
"And Rose?""
Victoria smiled.
"Rose is the reason Daniel disappeared.""
At 10:15 a.m., Rose stood in the hospital cafeteria, staring at a vending machine.
She had not slept.
Her hands hurt.
Her phone had finally been charged, and she had discovered seventeen missed calls from her landlord.
She called him back.
"Hello?""
"Rose, where have you been?"" Mr. Collins snapped.
"You were supposed to bring the rent yesterday.""
"I know. I'm sorry.""
"Sorry doesn't pay the bills.""
"I'll have it tomorrow.""
"That's what you said last week.""
Rose closed her eyes.
"I'll get the money.""
"Then you need to bring it by noon.""
The call ended.
She stood there holding the phone.
A familiar wave of shame crept through her chest.
She had spent the previous night saving a billionaire's mother.
Yet she still couldn't afford the rent on her small apartment.
"Rose?""
She turned.
Nathaniel stood several feet away.
He had changed into a charcoal suit.
His hair was slightly disheveled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.
"Are you all right?""
"Yes.""
He glanced at her phone.
"Who was that?""
"My landlord.""
"How much do you owe?""
Rose stiffened.
"That's none of your business.""
"Fair enough.""
He placed a small paper bag on the table.
"Breakfast.""
Rose looked inside.
A sandwich, an apple, and a bottle of water.
She stared at him.
"Did you buy this?""
"No. Marcus prepared it.""
"Why?""
"Because neither of us has eaten.""
Rose almost laughed.
It came out as a tired breath.
Nathaniel pulled out a chair.
"Victoria told me something.""
Rose's expression changed.
"What?""
"She said your mother helped Daniel Mercer steal money from my family.""
Rose went completely still.
Then she closed the paper bag.
"She's lying.""
"How do you know?""
"Because my mother spent her entire life cleaning other people's houses. She never stole anything.""
Nathaniel watched her carefully.
"Victoria also said you're the reason Daniel disappeared.""
Rose looked at him.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"She knows about the key.""
Nathaniel leaned forward.
"Rose, what happened eleven years ago?""
Rose looked toward the cafeteria entrance.
A nurse pushed a wheelchair past the windows.
Somewhere, a child was crying.
Ordinary sounds.
An ordinary morning.
But Rose felt as though the past had just opened a door.
"My mother didn't tell me everything," she began.
"But I remember that night.""
Nathaniel remained silent.
"After I found her in the kitchen, she told me to go upstairs. She said there were men outside the house.""
"Did you see them?""
"Yes.""
"How many?""
"Three.""
Rose rubbed her bandaged fingers together.
"One was standing near the garage. Another was talking on the phone. The third was inside the house.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"Inside?""
"Yes.""
"What did he look like?""
Rose closed her eyes.
"I remember his shoes.""
Nathaniel waited.
"Black leather. A silver buckle. And a scar on his left hand.""
Nathaniel's expression changed.
"Did you recognize him?""
"No.""
Rose opened her eyes.
"But I heard him talking to my mother.""
"What did he say?""
She swallowed.
"He said, 'The boy must never know what his father signed.''"
Nathaniel's face drained of color.
"What boy?""
Rose looked directly at him.
"You.""
That afternoon, Nathaniel returned to the archive.
The private vault was located beneath the eastern wing of the Callaway Tower, behind two biometric security doors and a reinforced steel corridor.
Only four people had ever possessed access.
Richard Callaway.
Eleanor Callaway.
Nathaniel.
And Daniel Mercer.
At least, according to the official records.
Marcus stood beside the entrance.
"We recovered the access logs.""
Nathaniel looked at him.
"Show me.""
Marcus opened a file.
"Victoria entered using her biometric credential. But the system also recorded another authorization.""
"Whose?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Yours, sir.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"I wasn't here three nights ago.""
"I know.""
"Then someone duplicated my access.""
"Apparently.""
Nathaniel stared at the security panel.
"Open it.""
The door unlocked with a heavy metallic click.
Inside, rows of filing cabinets lined the walls. A long table occupied the center of the room. Dust covered most of the shelves.
But one drawer had been disturbed.
Nathaniel approached it.
A small brass lock hung from its handle.
He stopped.
The symbol engraved on the lock was identical to the one on Rose's key.
"Marcus.""
The security chief looked over.
"Sir?""
"Get Rose.""
At 4:42 p.m., Rose entered the archive.
She looked uncomfortable in the expensive clothes Marcus had arranged for her. A simple dark sweater and black trousers replaced her catering uniform.
The brass key rested against her chest.
Nathaniel pointed toward the drawer.
"Is that the lock?""
Rose approached slowly.
She removed the necklace.
For a moment, her hands trembled.
Then she inserted the key.
It turned.
A small click echoed through the room.
Inside the drawer sat a single leather-bound notebook, a photograph, and a sealed envelope.
Nathaniel picked up the photograph.
It showed Richard Callaway standing beside Daniel Mercer.
Between them stood a young woman.
Rose leaned closer.
Her breath caught.
"That's my mother.""
Nathaniel looked at her.
Margaret Bennett appeared no older than thirty-five. Her hair was tied behind her neck, and she wore a simple white blouse.
But the most startling detail was her hand.
She was holding a baby.
A little girl wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
Rose stared at the photograph.
"That's me.""
Nathaniel turned it over.
Three words had been written in Richard's handwriting.
*THE REAL HEIR.*
Neither of them spoke.
Nathaniel slowly opened the notebook.
The first page contained a list of account numbers, dates, and names.
The last entry was different.
It had been written in red ink.
*If Richard fails to protect the child, the Sterling family will inherit everything.*
Rose stepped backward.
"Why would my mother have a picture like that?""
Nathaniel turned another page.
A birth certificate had been tucked inside.
The paper was old.
The ink had faded.
But the names remained clear.
Father: Daniel Alexander Mercer.
Mother: Margaret Elizabeth Bennett.
Child: Rose Elizabeth Bennett.
Nathaniel looked at her.
Then at the certificate.
Then back at her.
"Rose...""
She shook her head.
"No.""
He didn't speak.
"No, that can't be right.""
A sudden sound came from the archive entrance.
Marcus appeared, his face pale.
"Mr. Callaway, we have a problem.""
Nathaniel closed the notebook.
"What?""
Marcus held up his phone.
"Detective Hayes just called. Victoria has been released.""
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
"Released? On what grounds?""
"Arthur Sterling posted bail. But that's not the problem.""
Marcus swallowed.
"She wasn't alone when she left the precinct.""
"Who was with her?""
Marcus turned the phone around.
A photograph filled the screen.
Victoria stood beside a man wearing a dark overcoat.
His face was older than in the security footage, but unmistakable.
Nathaniel felt the blood drain from his face.
Daniel Mercer.
Alive.
Standing outside a police station.
And holding Victoria's hand.
Rose stared at the photograph.
Then she looked at the birth certificate in Nathaniel's hand.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"That's my father.""
The archive lights suddenly went out.
A heavy metallic crash echoed from somewhere behind them.
Marcus shouted.
"Down!""
Nathaniel grabbed Rose and pulled her behind the central table.
A second later, the archive's security system activated.
Red emergency lights flashed across the walls.
And from the darkness beyond the entrance, a familiar voice spoke.
"Hello, Nathaniel.""
A pause.
May you like
Then:
"Where is my daughter?""
