Chapter 6: The Brother Behind the Locked Door

Nathaniel watched the surveillance image until the screen went dark.

Victoria.

Thomas.

A private rehabilitation facility.

And a brother he had never known existed.

The pieces were beginning to form a picture, but every answer opened another question.

"How long has she known?"" Nathaniel asked.

Marcus checked the records.

"Her first documented visit was eight months ago.""

"Eight months?""

"Yes, sir.""

Nathaniel turned toward Daniel.

"Did you know?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not.""

"You're telling me you came back after eleven years, and you had no idea Sterling was keeping Richard's son?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I knew Richard had another child. I didn't know where he went.""

Nathaniel pointed toward the screen.

"Then explain that.""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"Victoria must have discovered the boy through the old Meridian records.""

Rose folded her arms.

"Why would she visit him?""

Daniel looked at her.

"Because Thomas is the legal heir to something Richard left behind.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"What?""

"The Meridian Trust.""

Marcus opened another file.

"The trust was established shortly before Richard's death. It holds a controlling interest in several Callaway subsidiaries.""

Nathaniel shook his head.

"I inherited the company.""

"You inherited the operating businesses," Daniel explained.

"But the original trust was never transferred.""

Nathaniel looked at the screen.

"Who controls it?""

"Richard named Thomas as the primary beneficiary.""

Nathaniel stared.

"Why would he do that?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Because he knew Sterling would eventually come for the company. Thomas was hidden so the trust could survive.""

Rose looked toward Eleanor.

"Did you know?""

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"Richard told me he had made arrangements. He said Nathaniel would inherit the business, but Thomas would inherit the truth.""

Nathaniel stepped away.

His entire life had been built around becoming his father's successor.

He had worked eighteen-hour days.

Turned down vacations.

Missed birthdays.

Lost relationships.

And somewhere in the same city, another son had been hidden away with the legal power to dismantle everything.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" he asked.

Eleanor looked devastated.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

Nathaniel gave a humorless laugh.

"You lost me the moment you decided I couldn't be trusted with the truth.""

His mother lowered her eyes.

Rose watched him carefully.

For the first time, she understood why he had become so cold.

He had spent his life trying to earn approval from a father who had apparently built an entirely separate family without telling him.

And now the dead man's secrets were threatening to destroy the living.

At 9:30 p.m., Marcus parked the SUV outside the rehabilitation facility.

The compound stood behind a high stone wall.

A metal sign identified it as the Sterling Neurobehavioral Recovery Center.

There were no visible patients.

No visitors.

No activity beyond two security guards near the main entrance.

Nathaniel examined the building through binoculars.

"How many people inside?""

"Approximately thirty staff members," Marcus replied.

"Fourteen patients. Private security on every floor.""

Daniel looked toward the western side.

"There's a service entrance behind the generator room.""

Marcus frowned.

"How do you know?""

"I helped design the original property.""

Nathaniel turned.

"Of course you did.""

Daniel ignored the remark.

"Before Sterling bought it, the building belonged to a private medical group. The old access tunnel should still connect the generator room to the basement.""

Marcus checked his equipment.

"I'll take two men and secure the entrance.""

Nathaniel shook his head.

"No. We're going together.""

"Sir, that's not advisable.""

"Thomas is my brother.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Which is exactly why you shouldn't walk into a possible ambush.""

Rose stepped forward.

"I'm going too.""

Nathaniel immediately turned.

"Absolutely not.""

"Why?""

"Because I said so.""

Rose's expression hardened.

"That worked for you your entire life, didn't it?""

Nathaniel stared at her.

She continued.

"You've spent twenty-six years being protected from the truth. I've spent twenty-six years living with the consequences of someone else's secrets. I'm not staying in a car while you decide whether my brother deserves to know me.""

Daniel watched them silently.

Finally, Nathaniel exhaled.

"Stay behind Marcus.""

Rose nodded.

"Fine.""

"And if anything happens, you leave.""

"Fine.""

He looked at Marcus.

"Keep her safe.""

"With my life, sir.""

The service tunnel was exactly where Daniel remembered it.

A narrow concrete passage ran beneath the generator room, ending at a steel door.

Marcus disabled the electronic lock.

They entered the basement.

The air smelled of disinfectant and damp concrete.

A fluorescent light flickered overhead.

Rose walked behind Nathaniel, listening to the muffled sounds above them.

A cart rolled across a distant hallway.

Someone laughed.

Then a door slammed.

"Which way?"" Nathaniel whispered.

Daniel pointed left.

"Patient records.""

Marcus checked the corridor.

"Two guards.""

Nathaniel looked at him.

"Can we avoid them?""

"Not without another route.""

Daniel glanced toward a maintenance room.

"There.""

They slipped inside.

A narrow staircase led upward.

At the top was a locked door.

Marcus worked on the electronic panel.

The lock clicked.

They emerged into a dim administrative corridor.

A sign on the wall read:

*PRIVATE WING — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.*

Rose stopped.

"That's where he is?""

Daniel nodded.

"Most likely.""

A nurse walked past the far end of the corridor.

Marcus stepped into the shadows.

The woman disappeared through a door.

Nathaniel moved forward.

Then they heard a voice.

A familiar female voice.

Victoria.

"You're being difficult again, Thomas.""

Rose froze.

Nathaniel raised a hand.

They approached the partially open door.

Inside, Victoria sat beside a hospital bed.

A young man lay beneath a white blanket.

His dark hair fell across his forehead.

He had a thin scar near his left eyebrow.

His face looked exhausted.

But his eyes were open.

"I told you," he said weakly.

"I'm not signing anything.""

Victoria crossed her legs.

"You're being unreasonable.""

"I'm not giving you the trust.""

"You don't even understand what it is.""

"I understand that you keep asking me to sign papers that would make you very rich.""

Victoria smiled.

"Your brother is already rich.""

Thomas looked away.

"Then why do you need my signature?""

Victoria leaned forward.

"Because your brother doesn't know how to run a company. He inherited a name. You inherited the power.""

Thomas laughed weakly.

"That's funny. I've spent most of my life in a locked room.""

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"Don't be dramatic.""

Rose felt her stomach twist.

Thomas was not being treated like a patient.

He was being held.

Nathaniel's hands tightened.

Victoria placed a document on the bedside table.

"Sign it, and I'll arrange for you to leave.""

Thomas looked at the paper.

"You're lying.""

Victoria stood.

"Then perhaps I should remind you what happens when you refuse.""

She reached toward a medical tray.

A nurse entered carrying a syringe.

Nathaniel moved.

"Get away from him!""

Victoria spun around.

Her face went white.

For one brief second, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then she smiled.

"Nathaniel.""

He stepped into the room.

"Move away from my brother.""

Victoria glanced at Thomas.

Then at Rose.

Her expression changed.

"Well, this is unexpected.""

Rose approached the bed.

"Thomas?""

The young man looked at her.

He stared.

Then his eyes moved to the silver necklace around her neck.

His face changed.

"Rose?""

She stopped.

"You know me?""

Thomas struggled to sit up.

"Your mother...""

His voice cracked.

"She said you'd come.""

Rose's eyes filled.

She reached for his hand.

"I'm here.""

Thomas looked at her bandaged palms.

"What happened to you?""

"Nothing important.""

He shook his head.

"You're bleeding.""

Rose laughed through her tears.

"So are you, apparently.""

For the first time, Thomas smiled.

It was small.

Fragile.

But real.

Then Nathaniel turned toward Victoria.

"You're going to explain everything.""

Victoria straightened her jacket.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"Try me.""

She gestured toward the medical tray.

"You have no idea what he's capable of.""

Nathaniel looked at Thomas.

"He's my brother.""

Victoria's lips curled.

"Exactly.""

She picked up her handbag.

"Ask him what happened to the last person who tried to take him away.""

Daniel entered the room.

Victoria's face drained of color.

"Daniel?""

He looked at her.

"Hello, Victoria.""

She stepped backward.

"You're supposed to be dead.""

Daniel's expression remained cold.

"So I've heard.""

Marcus moved toward the door.

"Nobody leaves.""

Victoria laughed.

"You think a security detail can stop what's coming?""

Nathaniel stepped closer.

"What did you do to him?""

Victoria looked at Thomas.

Then she looked at Nathaniel.

"I didn't put him here.""

"Then who did?""

She smiled.

"Your mother.""

The room fell silent.

Nathaniel turned toward Eleanor's photograph on his phone.

"That's impossible.""

Victoria tilted her head.

"Ask her about the night Thomas disappeared. Ask her why she signed the admission papers. Ask her why she agreed to keep him here.""

Thomas suddenly grabbed Rose's wrist.

"She's lying.""

Victoria laughed.

"Am I?""

Thomas looked at Nathaniel.

"Don't listen to her.""

Nathaniel moved toward the bed.

"Thomas, what happened?""

Thomas struggled to breathe.

"Mother brought me here.""

Nathaniel froze.

"Why?""

"She said I needed treatment.""

"For what?""

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

"She said I was sick.""

Rose squeezed his hand.

"Thomas...""

He looked at her.

Then he whispered:

"I wasn't sick.""

Nathaniel's voice dropped.

"What are you saying?""

Thomas glanced at Victoria.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, he looked directly at Nathaniel.

"I saw your father the night he died.""

Nathaniel went completely still.

"Where?""

Thomas swallowed.

"In this building.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's impossible. Richard died eleven years ago.""

Thomas shook his head.

"No.""

He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed a hospital corridor.

A man stood near the far doorway.

His face was older than in Nathaniel's childhood memories, but unmistakable.

Richard Callaway.

Alive.

And beside him stood Eleanor.

Nathaniel stared at the photograph.

His mother had told him his father died in a car accident eleven years ago.

The official death certificate said the same thing.

But the photograph was dated six months after the supposed accident.

"Where did you get this?"" Nathaniel whispered.

Thomas looked toward Victoria.

"She gave it to me.""

Nathaniel turned.

Victoria was already moving toward the door.

Marcus blocked her path.

"Not so fast.""

But Victoria didn't look frightened anymore.

She looked almost amused.

"You're all so busy looking for a dead man," she said softly.

Nathaniel stepped toward her.

"What does that mean?""

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed her phone.

She pressed a button.

A video appeared on the screen.

The footage showed a man sitting in a dark room.

His hair was silver.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Richard Callaway.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

"Nathaniel, if you're watching this, it means Eleanor has finally told you about your brother.""

The video paused.

Richard leaned closer.

"And there's something else you need to know.""

He took a breath.

"The man who raised you was never your biological father.""

Nathaniel stopped breathing.

Victoria smiled.

"Now we're getting somewhere.""

On the screen, Richard delivered the final sentence.

"Your real father is Daniel Mercer.""

The room fell silent.

Rose slowly turned toward Daniel.

Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.

Thomas closed his eyes.

May you like

And Nathaniel, standing between the woman he had married and the man who had supposedly been his father's best friend, realized that the Callaway family secret was far more devastating than he had imagined.

*The two men he had spent his entire life trying to understand might have been lying about who he was from the very beginning.*
