Chapter 4: The Father in the Darkness

"Where is my daughter?""

The voice came from the entrance.

Nathaniel tightened his grip around Rose's wrist and pushed her farther behind the central table.

The emergency lights flashed red across the archive walls. Somewhere above them, an alarm began pulsing in short, mechanical bursts.

Marcus drew his weapon.

"Identify yourself!""

A figure stepped into the doorway.

Daniel Mercer.

He looked older than the photographs. His dark hair had turned almost entirely silver, and a deep scar ran from his left temple toward his cheekbone. His expensive overcoat hung loosely from his shoulders.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Cold blue.

Focused.

Alive.

"Put the gun down, Marcus," Daniel said.

"If I wanted Nathaniel dead, he wouldn't have made it to his father's office.""

Nathaniel stepped out from behind the table.

"Eleven years.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes.""

"Eleven years, and you walk into my building asking for my daughter?""

Daniel's eyes shifted toward Rose.

For the first time, his expression broke.

"Rose.""

She stood frozen.

Her fingers were wrapped around the brass key hanging from her necklace.

"Don't come closer," she whispered.

Daniel stopped immediately.

"I've looked for you for years.""

"Why?""

"Because your mother made me promise I'd keep you safe.""

Rose gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Safe? My mother died alone. I spent years wondering why nobody came to find me. You were alive this entire time?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know.""

"Then why didn't you come?""

"Because the people who killed your mother were still looking for you.""

The room went silent.

Nathaniel moved between them.

"Who killed Margaret?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Your father.""

Nathaniel's expression hardened.

"Choose your next words carefully.""

"I've spent eleven years choosing them.""

Daniel reached inside his coat.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

"Hands where I can see them!""

Daniel slowly withdrew a folded photograph and placed it on the floor.

Then he stepped back.

Nathaniel picked it up.

The image showed a black sedan parked outside a modest Connecticut house. A woman stood near the front door.

Margaret Bennett.

Beside her stood Richard Callaway.

The photograph had been taken at night.

On the back, someone had written:

*October 14. The night before the accident.*

Nathaniel stared at it.

"My father was at the Mercer estate?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because Margaret had discovered the truth about the Meridian accounts.""

Daniel glanced toward Rose.

"She was the only person who knew where the original records were hidden.""

Rose shook her head.

"You're lying.""

Daniel's voice softened.

"Your mother was an accountant before she became a housekeeper. She helped me build the Meridian foundation. She discovered that Richard had been moving money through shell companies, using charitable donations to hide payments to politicians and defense contractors.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"Why would my father do that?""

"Because he was being blackmailed.""

"By whom?""

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

"Arthur Sterling.""

The name landed heavily.

"Your father and Sterling were partners," Daniel continued.

"They had built an illegal procurement network through several defense subsidiaries. Richard wanted out. Arthur didn't.""

Nathaniel shook his head.

"My father would never have knowingly funded something illegal.""

"That's what you want to believe.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Richard discovered that the contracts were being used to divert money into private accounts. He confronted Sterling. Sterling threatened to expose him as the architect of the entire operation.""

Nathaniel looked down at the photograph.

"And you?""

"I tried to help Richard.""

"Then why did he accuse you of stealing?""

"Because he needed someone to blame.""

Daniel's voice grew rough.

"He signed a statement saying I had orchestrated the transfers. In exchange, Sterling promised to leave Eleanor and you alone.""

Nathaniel's stomach tightened.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It will when you see the rest.""

Daniel looked at Rose.

"Your mother kept the original agreement.""

Rose touched the necklace.

"The key?""

Daniel nodded.

"It opens a deposit box containing the original documents. Your mother gave you the key because she knew she might not survive the night.""

Rose's eyes filled.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she knew you would try to help me.""

"And?""

Daniel looked at her.

"You were sixteen. I wasn't going to let you die because of my mistakes.""

Rose stared at him.

"Instead, you let me believe you were dead.""

Daniel didn't answer.

The silence was worse than any explanation.

A sudden metallic crash sounded above them.

Marcus turned toward the entrance.

"Someone's trying to access the security corridor.""

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

"Did you bring anyone?""

"No.""

"Then who is it?""

Daniel's face changed.

"Sterling.""

Marcus checked his radio.

"Control, this is Marcus. Report.""

Static.

"Control, respond.""

Nothing.

Nathaniel took out his phone.

No signal.

The archive's security system had been isolated.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

"They've cut the internal network.""

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

"How did they know we were here?""

Daniel looked at Rose.

"Because someone told them.""

Rose immediately shook her head.

"I didn't.""

"I know.""

But Nathaniel had already begun thinking about the security footage, the duplicate credentials, and Victoria's access to the archive.

Someone inside the building had been helping Sterling.

"Marcus, get Rose out through the maintenance passage.""

Marcus nodded.

"What about you?""

"I'm staying.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's exactly what Sterling wants.""

Nathaniel turned.

"Then perhaps he should come down and explain himself.""

The lights flickered.

A voice crackled through the emergency speaker.

"Mr. Callaway.""

Nathaniel recognized it immediately.

Arthur Sterling.

"Please don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.""

Nathaniel looked up.

"Come down here and say that to my face.""

Arthur laughed.

"You're in possession of property that belongs to my family. Hand over the key, and everyone walks away.""

Rose's hand tightened around the necklace.

Nathaniel stepped closer to the speaker.

"Your daughter tried to murder my mother.""

"An unfortunate misunderstanding.""

"She changed Eleanor's medication.""

"Can you prove that?""

Nathaniel smiled coldly.

"Yes.""

A pause.

Then Arthur's voice returned.

"Your father made the same mistake you are making now. He thought doing the right thing would save him.""

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

Daniel's expression had gone rigid.

Arthur continued.

"Ask Daniel what happened to Richard after he signed the agreement.""

Nathaniel turned.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked away.

Arthur laughed again.

"Go on, Daniel. Tell him.""

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

"Your father was killed three weeks after he signed the documents.""

Nathaniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"What?""

"His death wasn't an accident.""

The speaker clicked.

Then Arthur delivered the final blow.

"Your mother knows who ordered it. Perhaps you should ask her before she dies.""

The transmission ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus's radio crackled.

"Marcus! They're inside!""

A gunshot echoed through the corridor.

Marcus pushed Rose toward the maintenance door.

"Move!""

Nathaniel grabbed Daniel's coat.

"If you're lying about my father—"

"I'm not.""

"Then you'll help me find the person who killed him.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why I came back.""

They rushed toward the maintenance passage.

Rose was the last to enter.

Before she crossed the threshold, she looked back at the photograph still lying on the floor.

Her mother stood beside a man who had supposedly been dead for eleven years.

Rose picked it up.

On the reverse, beneath the date, she noticed a second line of handwriting.

It wasn't Richard's.

It was her mother's.

*The child is not the only heir.*

Rose stared at the words.

Then she looked toward Nathaniel.

"Mr. Callaway?""

He turned.

"What's wrong?""

She held up the photograph.

"Your father left something else behind.""

Nathaniel read the message.

His expression changed.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel looked at the photograph.

And for the first time since entering the archive, he appeared genuinely terrified.

"There's another child," he whispered.

May you like

Then the maintenance door slammed shut behind them.

And somewhere in the darkness, someone began counting down.
