Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Steel Door
The voice on the other side of the steel door was calm.
Almost gentle.
“Welcome home, Adrian.””
Adrian stared at the door.
He knew that voice.
Not from childhood.
Not from old recordings.
From hundreds of evenings at the mansion.
From phone calls.
From family dinners.
From the man who had spent the last eight years telling him how proud he was.
Adrian's voice shook.
“Dad?””
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“Don't answer him.””
The voice came again.
“You always were a curious boy.””
Adrian stepped closer to the door.
“You're alive.””
A low chuckle came through the steel.
“Obviously.””
Maya clung to Adrian's jacket.
“Daddy, who's talking?””
He looked down at her.
“My father.””
Maya's face tightened with confusion.
“But Grandpa died.””
Sarah shook her head.
“He wanted everyone to believe that.””
Daniel looked at Dr. Bennett.
“You knew?””
The doctor lowered his eyes.
“I knew he was alive.””
“And you helped him?””
“I had no choice.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You always have a choice.””
Dr. Bennett's expression broke.
“Not when someone has already buried three people who said no.””
Vanessa went pale.
Adrian looked toward her.
“Three?””
She nodded.
“My lawyer. My accountant. And Thomas.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Thomas is alive.””
Vanessa stared.
“Not anymore.””
The words fell into the room like stones.
Daniel looked at the door.
“You're saying your father killed Thomas?””
“No,” Sarah whispered.
Everyone turned.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Thomas wasn't killed.””
“Then where is he?”” Adrian asked.
Sarah looked at Elena.
“She knows.””
Elena's lips trembled.
“He told me to find Michael.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Michael was trying to get me away from him.””
“From Thomas?””
Elena shook her head.
“From Grandpa.””
Adrian froze.
“He knew I was his granddaughter.””
“Yes.””
“And he kept you here?””
“He said I belonged to the family.””
Sarah squeezed Elena's shoulder.
“He wanted the trust.””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“The trust.””
Daniel nodded.
“He needs Elena.””
A voice came through the door.
“You finally understand.””
Adrian's blood ran cold.
His father.
Still listening.
Still controlling the conversation.
“What do you want?”” Adrian demanded.
“Something very simple.””
“What?””
“Open the door.””
Sarah immediately said, “No.””
The voice laughed.
“Sarah, you have been stubborn for a very long time.””
Adrian looked around the hidden room.
“There has to be another way out.””
“There is.””
Dr. Bennett pointed toward the ceiling.
“A ventilation shaft.””
Daniel looked up.
“Too narrow for an adult.””
“Not for a child,” Sarah said.
Maya immediately shook her head.
“I am not going through there.””
Adrian crouched beside her.
“You don't have to.””
Sarah pointed to the far wall.
“There is another mechanism.””
Adrian searched the bricks.
A small silver raven had been carved into one stone.
He pressed it.
A section of wall moved.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Daniel stared.
“This house is a maze.””
“My father built it that way,” Adrian said.
The voice beyond the door suddenly became louder.
“You have exactly ten minutes.””
Adrian looked at the locked door.
“For what?””
“To decide whether you want Sarah to see tomorrow.””
Sarah's face went white.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You touch her, and I'll—”
“You'll what?””
Silence.
“You spent eight years believing she was dead,” the voice continued.
“You have no idea what I'm capable of.””
Maya whispered, “Daddy.””
Adrian looked at her.
Then at Sarah.
Then Elena.
Something inside him settled.
He was finished being afraid.
“Daniel,” he said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Get the girls through the tunnel.””
“And you?””
“I'll stay.””
Sarah grabbed his wrist.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You waited eight years. I'm not leaving you again.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Adrian, that's what he wants.””
“Then we'll give him something he doesn't expect.””
Daniel understood.
“You're going to pretend to surrender.””
Adrian nodded.
“Exactly.””
Sarah shook her head.
“He'll kill you.””
“Not if he believes I'm still useful.””
The voice outside interrupted.
“Adrian?””
He turned toward the door.
“I'm listening.””
“Good.””
Adrian looked at the others.
“Take them.””
Daniel led Maya toward the tunnel.
Maya stopped.
“Daddy.””
Adrian crouched.
She wrapped both arms around him.
“Don't let him hurt you.””
He kissed the top of her head.
“I won't.””
“You promised that before.””
Adrian swallowed.
“I know.””
He looked directly into her eyes.
“This time I mean it.””
Elena stepped forward.
She held out the little brass key.
“I think you'll need this.””
Adrian took it.
“For what?””
She pointed down the tunnel.
“There is a room at the end.””
“What room?””
“The archive.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What is inside?””
Elena's voice dropped.
“Everything.””
Daniel returned.
“Move.””
Maya and Elena disappeared into the tunnel with Daniel and Clara.
Sarah remained.
Adrian looked at her.
“You should go too.””
“No.””
“Sarah.””
“I spent eight years hiding behind walls.””
She shook her head.
“I'm not hiding anymore.””
Adrian stared at her.
Then nodded.
“All right.””
They turned toward the steel door.
Adrian pressed the keypad.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
An old man stood on the other side.
Adrian had seen him in photographs.
His father's hair was completely gray now, and his face looked thinner.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Patient.
Unshaken.
“Hello, son.””
Adrian stared.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
His father smiled.
“I've heard that before.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“You ruined our lives.””
His expression didn't change.
“You were always sentimental.””
Adrian's hands clenched.
“Where is Thomas?””
His father looked amused.
“Still concerned about him?””
“He tried to expose you.””
“He failed.””
“Where is he?””
The old man turned.
“You'll find him when you're ready.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
His father looked at Sarah.
Then at Adrian.
“You still don't see it.””
“See what?””
“Thomas was never the real threat.””
Sarah whispered, “Then who was?””
The old man smiled.
“You've been asking the wrong question.””
He pointed toward the corridor.
“Come.””
Adrian didn't move.
“Why should I?””
“Because I can show you who really took Sarah.””
Sarah's face changed.
“You.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You did.””
“I gave the order.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You ordered it.””
“Yes.””
“But someone carried it out.””
His father's smile widened.
“Now you're thinking.””
Adrian's voice became cold.
“Who?””
The old man looked toward Sarah.
“Ask your wife.””
Sarah froze.
Adrian turned.
“Sarah?””
She couldn't meet his eyes.
“Tell him,” the old man said.
Sarah's face crumpled.
Adrian stared at her.
“Tell me what?””
Sarah finally whispered:
“I helped them.””
Silence.
Adrian's face emptied.
“What?””
“I didn't know what they were going to do.””
“You helped them take me?””
“No.””
“You helped them take Elena?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
The old man laughed quietly.
“There it is.””
Adrian turned toward him.
“What did she do?””
“She signed the papers.””
“What papers?””
“Guardianship documents.””
Adrian looked at Sarah.
“Why?””
“Because I was told they would protect Elena.””
“And instead?””
“They used the documents to disappear her.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You let them take our daughter.””
Sarah's tears fell.
“I tried to get her back.””
“But you failed.””
“Yes.””
The old man interrupted.
“Enough.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You manipulated everyone.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You framed Maya tonight.””
His expression became serious.
“That wasn't me.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
The old man shook his head.
“Vanessa did that alone.””
Vanessa's confession from earlier suddenly returned to Adrian's mind.
The necklace.
The accusation.
The fake tears.
The black folder.
Adrian stared.
“Then why?””
His father smiled.
“Because Vanessa knew you were getting close.””
“Close to what?””
“To the truth.””
Sarah looked at Adrian.
“You need to understand.””
“What?””
“Your father wasn't working alone.””
Adrian frowned.
“He had the Raven Circle.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“The Raven Circle worked for someone else.””
The old man's expression finally changed.
For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
Adrian noticed.
“Who?””
Sarah looked at him.
“The person who inherited control after your grandfather died.””
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“My grandfather?””
Sarah nodded.
“Your father was never the head.””
The old man backed away.
“Sarah.””
She continued.
“He was only protecting someone.””
“Who?””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Everyone turned.
The man approaching looked exactly like Adrian's old family lawyer.
Except Adrian knew the lawyer had died six years ago.
The man stopped beneath the light.
He smiled.
“Good.””
Adrian stared.
“You're dead.””
The man laughed.
“So many people in this family are.””
He held up a black folder.
“The real story is inside.””
Adrian recognized the folder.
It was the same one Vanessa had stolen.
The man tossed it onto the table.
Then he looked at Sarah.
Then Adrian.
Then toward the tunnel where Maya and Elena had escaped.
“Now,” he said, “let's talk about why the two girls cannot both inherit.””
Sarah's face went white.
Adrian took one step forward.
“What do you mean?””
The man smiled.
“One of them isn't actually your daughter.””
May you like
The lights went out.
And somewhere inside the tunnel, Maya screamed.
