Chapter 4: Beneath the Nursery Floor
The word echoed through the mansion.
“Mommy?””
Maya's fingers went cold.
She looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had spent the entire night lying, accusing, and hiding secrets was suddenly trembling so badly she had to grip the edge of the table.
“That isn't possible,” Vanessa whispered.
Adrian stared at her.
“Where did that voice come from?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel pointed toward the corridor.
“The old nursery.””
Adrian's face tightened.
“The nursery was sealed years ago.””
“Apparently not well enough,” Daniel said.
Another sound came from below.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Maya pressed against Clara.
“There's someone underneath us.””
Clara looked toward the floor.
“The nursery was built over the old wine cellar.””
Adrian turned sharply.
“Why would a child be underneath the nursery?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered, “Because there wasn't supposed to be a child.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Please.””
“Not anymore.””
His voice was quiet.
But it carried across the room.
“No more lies.””
Vanessa looked down.
Adrian walked toward her.
“You accused my daughter tonight. You staged the necklace theft. You hid a child from me for eight years. And now someone is underneath this house saying your name.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Adrian…”
“Take me to the nursery.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I haven't been inside there since the night she disappeared.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then tonight you will.””
The old hallway toward the nursery seemed darker than the rest of the house.
The Halloween decorations ended near the staircase.
Beyond them, the wallpaper changed.
Old faded flowers.
Cracked gold trim.
Dusty portraits.
Maya stayed beside Clara while Adrian, Daniel, and Vanessa walked ahead.
A door waited at the end of the hall.
It was painted white once.
Now it was gray with age.
A small brass moon hung from the handle.
Adrian stopped.
“I thought this room was locked.””
Clara nodded.
“It was.””
Vanessa stared at the door.
“I had the key destroyed.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You didn't destroy it.””
She said nothing.
Adrian reached for the handle.
“Wait,” Maya said.
Everyone stopped.
She stared at the bottom of the door.
A thin line of light was visible underneath it.
Someone was inside.
Adrian slowly opened the door.
The nursery smelled like dust, old wood, and something sweet.
Like baby powder.
A wooden crib stood against one wall.
A rocking horse sat beneath a sheet.
Moon-shaped stickers covered the ceiling.
And on the far side of the room was an old rug.
It was slightly crooked.
Adrian looked around.
“This room hasn't been touched.””
Clara stepped inside.
“That isn't true.””
She pointed.
A glass of water sat on the windowsill.
Fresh.
Adrian's stomach dropped.
“Someone has been here.””
Daniel walked toward the rug.
“There.””
A small corner was folded back.
Underneath it was a wooden panel.
Vanessa backed away.
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You know what's under there.””
“I don't want to.””
“You're going to.””
He pulled the rug aside.
The panel was secured with a metal latch.
Daniel crouched.
“This isn't original.””
Clara knelt beside him.
“It was added later.””
Adrian looked toward Vanessa.
“Who built this?””
She closed her eyes.
“Thomas.””
Silence.
Daniel pulled the latch.
The wooden panel lifted.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Cold air rose from below.
Maya stepped backward.
“I don't want to go down there.””
Clara put an arm around her.
“You don't have to.””
But Adrian looked at Daniel.
“We're going.””
Daniel nodded.
They descended carefully.
Each step creaked beneath their weight.
Maya stayed upstairs with Clara and Vanessa.
At the bottom, Adrian's flashlight revealed a narrow passage.
Old brick walls.
Pipes.
Cobwebs.
A strange metallic smell.
Then Daniel stopped.
“Look.””
A pair of tiny white shoes sat beside the wall.
Maya, watching from the top of the stairs, covered her mouth.
Adrian picked one up.
It was a child's shoe.
Small enough for a toddler.
Vanessa began crying.
“No.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“Those belonged to Elena?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Daniel crouched beside the shoes.
“They've been here for years.””
“Then whose voice did we hear?”” Adrian asked.
Daniel looked deeper into the tunnel.
“That is what we're about to find out.””
They followed the passage.
The tunnel opened into a hidden room.
An old table sat in the center.
On it were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Elena as a baby.
Elena sleeping.
Elena standing beside Vanessa.
Elena holding a stuffed rabbit.
Adrian stared.
“She was here.””
Vanessa nodded weakly.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After she was born.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“You brought her here?””
“I had nowhere else to go.””
“You had a house.””
“You weren't supposed to know.””
“Why?””
Vanessa stared at the photographs.
“Because Thomas wanted her.””
Adrian's voice hardened.
“Why would he want your daughter?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He said she was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Before Vanessa could answer, Daniel found a small metal box beneath the table.
He opened it.
Inside was a folded newspaper clipping.
Adrian took it.
The headline read:
*BUSINESS PARTNERS' SECRET DISPUTE THREATENS BILLION-DOLLAR DEAL*
Beneath it were photographs of Adrian and Thomas.
Daniel pointed to a paragraph.
“Read that.””
Adrian's eyes moved across the words.
Then he froze.
“They were fighting over company ownership.””
Daniel nodded.
“Thomas believed your father cheated him out of his shares.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“What does that have to do with Elena?””
Vanessa whispered, “Everything.””
She sat down on an old wooden chair.
“Thomas found out I was pregnant.””
Adrian stared at her.
“And?””
“He said the baby wasn't safe.””
“Why?””
“He believed your father would use the child against him.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It did to him.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“He was obsessed with revenge.””
Daniel opened another file.
“There's more.””
Inside were handwritten notes.
Dates.
Times.
Addresses.
And a list of names.
Adrian scanned the page.
Then looked up.
“Why is Maya's name here?””
Clara went still.
Maya stepped closer.
“My name?””
Adrian immediately moved between her and the papers.
“Don't.””
But it was already too late.
Maya saw the name.
*MAYA VALE — AGE 6 — SCHOOL PICKUP 3:15 PM*
Her face went pale.
“Why is someone following me?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa stood suddenly.
“I told you.””
Adrian turned.
“Told me what?””
“That Elena wasn't the only child he watched.””
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Years.””
Adrian's voice rose.
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect Maya!””
“By accusing her tonight?””
“I panicked!””
“Because the necklace?””
“No!””
The word exploded from her.
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa's breathing became ragged.
“The necklace was never about money.””
Adrian stared.
“Then what was it about?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He already knew.
“The setting,” Daniel said.
Adrian frowned.
Daniel removed a photograph from the folder.
It showed the diamond necklace from several months earlier.
On the back was a magnified image of the clasp.
A tiny symbol had been engraved there.
A black raven.
“What is that?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa whispered, “A mark.””
“Whose mark?””
“Thomas's.””
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“You're saying he marked the necklace?””
“He used it to identify something.””
“What?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“The truth about Elena.””
Maya looked confused.
“The necklace knows where Elena is?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He examined the photograph again.
“It isn't the necklace itself.””
He turned it over.
“The engraving is a symbol used by a private security company.””
Adrian frowned.
“What company?””
Daniel looked up.
“Black Raven Security.””
Vanessa's face changed.
Adrian immediately understood.
“That was Thomas's company.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
The room fell silent.
Then they heard footsteps.
Above them.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was walking across the nursery floor.
Adrian reached for the flashlight.
“Stay here.””
He hurried toward the stairs.
Daniel followed.
Clara took Maya's hand.
Vanessa remained frozen.
Then came another sound.
A door opening.
Adrian stopped halfway up.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
He climbed faster.
When he reached the nursery, the room was empty.
But the front door stood open.
Wind blew through the curtains.
On the floor sat a single object.
A child's pink hair ribbon.
Maya recognized it immediately.
Her face drained of color.
“That was mine.””
Clara stared.
“When?””
“Daddy gave it to me last Christmas.””
Adrian picked it up.
On the ribbon was a tiny folded note.
He opened it.
Only six words had been written.
*SHE IS NOT YOUR ONLY DAUGHTER, ADRIAN.*
His hands began to shake.
Vanessa came up behind him.
The moment she saw the note, she whispered:
“He found us.””
Adrian turned.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the open window.
Then she said the name neither of them had dared speak in years.
“Thomas.””
A floorboard creaked behind them.
Everyone turned.
Nobody was there.
Then Maya looked down.
A small trail of muddy footprints led from the open nursery window to the old crib.
And inside the crib lay a fresh photograph.
It showed a girl about Maya's age.
Dark hair.
Same eyes.
Same face.
May you like
On the back, someone had written:
*ELENA — ALIVE.*
