Chapter 8: The Call Beneath the House

The ringing continued beneath the nursery.

One ring.

Then another.

Then another.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stared at the floor.

“Who put a phone down there?””

Clara shook her head.

“I didn't even know that room existed.””

Daniel looked toward the hidden staircase.

“The phone is connected to the old underground line.””

Adrian turned.

“There was a phone line?””

“Apparently.””

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

She whispered, “Don't answer it.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because that's what he wants.””

“Who?””

Vanessa didn't respond.

The phone rang again.

Adrian walked toward the nursery.

Maya caught his sleeve.

“Daddy…”

He looked down.

“Stay with Clara.””

“I don't want you to go.””

He knelt.

“I'll be right back.””

Maya shook her head.

“Every time you say that, something happens.””

Adrian's expression softened.

“You're right.””

He looked at Clara.

“Take both girls to the library.””

Elena immediately protested.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward the underground stairwell.

“The phone isn't for you.””

Adrian frowned.

“How do you know?””

“Because Michael told me.””

“What did he tell you?””

Elena looked frightened.

“He said if the phone ever rings beneath the nursery, I have to answer it.””

Adrian froze.

“Why?””

“Because it's the only way to know if Sarah is still alive.””

The ringing stopped.

Silence.

Then the phone began again.

Elena walked toward the staircase.

Adrian blocked her.

“No.””

“She said it’s for her,” Daniel said quietly.

Adrian looked at him.

“That doesn't mean she's going.””

Elena stared at Adrian.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

“When Michael gave me the key, he said the phone would ring only once.””

Adrian frowned.

“It just rang seven times.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the clock.

“It rang seven times before you heard it.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“What?””

Elena whispered, “The first seven rings were for the people who are already dead.””

The room fell silent.

Then the phone rang again.

One long ring.

Daniel moved toward the stairwell.

“I'm answering it.””

Adrian followed.

“No. I am.””

They descended together.

The underground room seemed smaller now.

The old photographs were still scattered across the table.

The child's shoes remained near the wall.

But one thing had changed.

The black folder was gone.

Daniel stopped.

“Where's the folder?””

Adrian looked around.

“It was here.””

“No.””

Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs.

She stared down at them.

“I took it.””

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“Why?””

“Because there's something inside you can't see.””

Daniel climbed back toward her.

“What did you take?””

Vanessa held the folder against her chest.

“You don't understand what happens when you read everything.””

“We already know enough.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don't.””

Adrian took a step toward her.

“Give it back.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“First answer one question.””

“What?””

“Do you remember the night Sarah disappeared?””

Adrian stared at her.

“Of course.””

“No.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You remember what you were told.””

Adrian froze.

“You were there.””

“I was.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“You came home at eleven.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Sarah was gone.””

“Yes.””

“And you told me she'd taken the baby and left.””

“Yes.””

“Why did I believe you?””

Vanessa's voice fell to a whisper.

“Because you were drugged.””

Daniel went still.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“Thomas didn't drug you.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Who did?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I did.””

Maya's voice echoed from the staircase.

“Daddy?””

Adrian turned.

Maya and Elena were standing halfway down the steps with Clara behind them.

Adrian looked horrified.

“Why aren't you in the library?””

Maya's eyes were fixed on Vanessa.

“Because she came after us.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked confused.

“I didn't.””

Maya pointed toward the dark corridor.

“She did.””

Adrian followed her finger.

At first, he saw nothing.

Then a shadow moved.

Daniel immediately grabbed his flashlight.

“Who's there?””

A man stepped into the light.

Not Thomas.

Not Michael.

An older man in a gray suit.

He looked familiar.

Adrian recognized him a second later.

“Dr. Bennett.””

The doctor smiled faintly.

“You remember me.””

Adrian's face hardened.

“You were Sarah's doctor.””

“I was.””

“You told me she died.””

Dr. Bennett looked at Vanessa.

“And she made me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don't.””

The doctor's smile vanished.

“I'm done protecting you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Sarah?””

Dr. Bennett looked toward Elena.

“She's closer than you think.””

Elena stepped backward.

“What does that mean?””

The doctor stared at her.

“You were never moved very far.””

Adrian's voice became urgent.

“Where?””

Dr. Bennett pointed toward the wall.

“Behind it.””

Daniel examined the brick wall.

“That's impossible.””

“Not in this house.””

Dr. Bennett walked toward an old wooden cabinet.

He pushed it aside.

A narrow seam appeared in the brickwork.

Adrian stared.

“There was a room behind this?””

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“For eight years.””

Vanessa began crying.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I didn't know where they kept her.””

“Who?””

“Thomas.””

Dr. Bennett corrected her.

“Not Thomas.””

Everyone turned.

The doctor's face was grim.

“Thomas was only the messenger.””

Adrian's blood ran cold.

“Then who was in charge?””

Dr. Bennett looked directly at him.

“You.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“You built this house.””

“I didn't build the hidden rooms.””

“Your father did.””

“My father?””

The doctor nodded.

“Your father was part of the organization that controlled this family long before you were born.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What organization?””

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

Then said:

“The Raven Circle.””

Elena's eyes widened.

“The black raven.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa's pendant.

“The symbol.””

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“They were businessmen, lawyers, doctors, bankers. People who could make records disappear.””

Adrian looked horrified.

“And Sarah discovered them.””

“She discovered they had been moving money through your father's companies.””

“And Elena?””

“Sarah was going to expose everything.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I begged her not to.””

“She didn't listen,” Dr. Bennett said.

Adrian's voice became quiet.

“What happened next?””

The doctor looked at the hidden doorway.

“She was taken.””

Adrian's fists clenched.

“By who?””

Dr. Bennett stared at the floor.

“Your father.””

The silence was absolute.

Adrian shook his head.

“My father was dead.””

“Not when it happened.””

Adrian froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if you knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Dr. Bennett looked at Adrian.

“Your father didn't die eight years ago.””

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“What?””

“He disappeared.””

Vanessa whispered, “Adrian…”

He turned toward her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

Dr. Bennett continued.

“Your father arranged Sarah's disappearance because she found evidence against him.””

“And the baby?””

“Your father wanted Elena.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust.””

Adrian remembered the document.

A biological child.

Control of the estate.

His father's plan suddenly became clear.

“If Elena existed,” Adrian whispered, “he could use her.””

“Yes.””

“To control me.””

“Yes.””

“And Sarah?””

“She refused.””

Dr. Bennett's face tightened.

“So they took her.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Is she alive?””

The doctor looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Where?””

He pointed toward the hidden wall.

“Behind there.””

Adrian rushed toward it.

Daniel pulled the cabinet away.

A hidden steel door appeared.

There was a keypad.

Four digits.

Adrian stared.

“What is the code?””

Dr. Bennett looked at him.

“Sarah's birthday.””

Adrian entered the numbers.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Vanessa whispered the date.

“July twenty-third.””

Adrian entered 0723.

A green light appeared.

The door unlocked.

Cold air rushed into the room.

Beyond it was a narrow passage.

At the end stood a single chair.

And behind the chair was a woman.

Thin.

Pale.

Her hair long and dark.

She was sitting with her back to them.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Sarah?””

The woman slowly turned.

Adrian staggered backward.

It was her.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably Sarah.

Maya gasped.

“Mom?””

Sarah's eyes immediately filled with tears.

She stared at Maya.

Then Elena.

Then Adrian.

Her lips trembled.

“Adrian…”

He couldn't move.

Sarah stood slowly.

“You came.””

Adrian finally stepped forward.

“You're alive.””

Sarah nodded.

“I've been waiting.””

He crossed the room and stopped inches from her.

For eight years, he had imagined this moment.

He had imagined anger.

Questions.

Joy.

Instead, all he could say was:

“Why didn't you come home?””

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

Then at Dr. Bennett.

Then back at Adrian.

“Because every person who tried to help me disappeared.””

Adrian turned.

“Who?””

Sarah's eyes filled with fear.

“The man who controls them all.””

“Who?””

Sarah reached for his hand.

Then she whispered the name.

“Your father.””

Adrian went completely still.

“My father is dead.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Everyone turned.

The hidden door began closing by itself.

Sarah's expression suddenly changed.

“Run.””

Adrian grabbed Maya.

Daniel pulled Elena close.

“What's happening?””

Sarah stared at the closing door.

“He knows you're here.””

“Who?””

Sarah's voice broke.

“The man you've been calling your father.””

The door slammed shut.

And from the other side came three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

May you like

Then a man's voice spoke through the steel.

“Welcome home, Adrian.””
