Chapter 1: The Accusation

The diamond necklace disappeared at exactly 9:17 p.m.

At 9:18, Vanessa screamed.

And by 9:19, an entire mansion full of masked Halloween guests was staring at seven-year-old Maya as if she were a thief.

“Where is it?”” Vanessa shouted.

Maya stood beneath a crystal chandelier, frozen in the middle of the marble foyer.

Around her, black candles flickered inside silver skulls. Fake cobwebs hung from the balconies. Orange lights glowed along the staircase, and dozens of masked guests had stopped laughing to watch the little girl in her white dress.

Maya's fingers trembled.

“I don't have it,” she whispered.

Vanessa pointed directly at her.

“She stole it.””

The words seemed to hit the room harder than thunder.

Maya looked at her stepmother, then at her father.

“Daddy…”

Adrian was standing only a few feet away, dressed in a black tuxedo and a half-mask decorated with silver lines. He had spent weeks preparing the Halloween charity party.

Now every guest was silent.

Maya ran toward him.

“I didn't take it, Daddy. I promise.””

Adrian looked down at his daughter.

For one second, Maya saw something that frightened her more than Vanessa's accusation.

Doubt.

“Vanessa,” Adrian said quietly, “are you sure?””

Vanessa pressed one hand to her chest.

“My necklace was in my bedroom before the party. I came downstairs for twenty minutes. When I returned, it was gone.””

She turned slowly toward Maya.

“And she was the only person near my room.””

“That isn't true!”” Maya cried.

“I only went upstairs because you told me to get my red ribbon!””

A few guests exchanged glances.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I told you to stay away from my room.””

“No, you didn't!””

“Maya,” Adrian said.

The child's face crumpled.

“I didn't take it.””

Clara, the housekeeper, stood near the dining room entrance with a tray in her hands. She had been working in the mansion for twelve years, long enough to know every creaking floorboard and every locked door.

She watched Vanessa carefully.

Something about the woman's accusation bothered her.

Vanessa wasn't crying.

Not really.

Her eyes were dry.

Her breathing was steady.

And despite the missing necklace supposedly being worth nearly half a million dollars, her hands weren't shaking.

Clara lowered the tray.

“Mr. Adrian,” she said gently, “perhaps we should search the house before accusing anyone.””

Vanessa immediately turned.

“There is nothing to search.””

Clara frowned.

“The necklace must be somewhere.””

“I know exactly where it isn't,” Vanessa snapped.

“My bedroom.””

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

The party music had stopped completely.

Behind him, someone whispered, “It's the little girl.””

Another guest whispered back, “That's awful.””

Maya heard them.

Her lower lip trembled.

“Daddy, please.””

Adrian crouched in front of her.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Maya swallowed.

“I was playing with Emma near the upstairs hallway. Then Vanessa came out of her room. She gave me the ribbon and told me to go downstairs.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never gave her anything.””

“You did!””

“Maya.””

“I saw you!””

Vanessa's voice became softer.

Almost sad.

“Adrian, she's scared.””

Maya stared at her.

That sentence made her stomach twist.

“She always says that,” Maya whispered.

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“Whenever something happens, she says I'm scared.””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“I think we are making this worse.””

Then she leaned closer to Adrian and lowered her voice.

“I warned you she had been taking things from my dresser.””

Maya's eyes widened.

“What?””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“You never told me that.””

“I didn't want to make trouble.””

Maya shook her head violently.

“That's not true!””

Vanessa turned toward the guests.

“I found her wearing my bracelet last month.””

“I didn't steal it!”” Maya cried.

“You gave it to me!””

“Maya,” Adrian said sharply.

The girl flinched.

The mansion suddenly felt enormous.

The ceilings were too high.

The chandelier was too bright.

Every masked face seemed to be watching her.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“The necklace wasn't just jewelry. It belonged to my mother.””

Maya had never seen Vanessa's mother.

But the room changed instantly.

Guests lowered their voices.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Vanessa…”

“She was the only thing I had left from her,” Vanessa said.

A tear finally rolled down her cheek.

Maya stared at it.

Some small part of her wondered how Vanessa could make one tear appear so perfectly.

Then Vanessa pointed at Maya again.

“I trusted this child.””

Maya's heart broke.

“Daddy, don't believe her.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

When he opened them, they were hard.

“Maya, give me the necklace.””

“I don't have it!””

“Where did you put it?””

“I didn't!””

Adrian stood.

Maya grabbed his sleeve.

“Daddy, please!””

He pulled his arm away.

Not violently.

But enough.

Maya stumbled backward.

The guests watched in silence.

Clara stepped forward.

“Sir, perhaps we should—”

“Clara,” Adrian said, “stay out of this.””

Clara stopped.

Vanessa came closer to Maya.

“You need to tell the truth.””

“I am telling the truth!””

“Then where is the necklace?””

“I don't know!””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I'm sorry, Maya.””

Those three words sounded colder than the accusation.

Adrian looked toward the front doors.

“I'm calling the police.””

Maya gasped.

“No!””

She ran to him again.

“I didn't do it! Daddy, I'm not a thief!””

Adrian caught her by the arms.

“Stop making this harder.””

“But I'm telling the truth!””

Her voice cracked.

“I swear!””

Adrian looked away.

“Enough.””

Maya began crying.

Real crying now.

The kind that made her chest hurt.

Clara's face changed.

She had seen enough children lie to know that most of them looked away when they were guilty.

Maya was doing the opposite.

She was staring directly at her father as though she believed his eyes could still save her.

Then Clara noticed something.

A small black camera mounted high on the hallway wall.

Its red indicator light was blinking.

She slowly looked toward the camera.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then back to the camera.

“Mr. Adrian,” Clara said.

He didn't answer.

Clara raised her voice.

“Mr. Adrian, wait.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Clara pointed upstairs.

“The security cameras.””

Vanessa's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Clara saw it.

Adrian followed her gaze.

“What about them?””

“The hallway camera,” Clara said.

“It points directly toward Vanessa's bedroom door.””

Maya stopped crying.

Everyone looked up.

Vanessa swallowed.

Adrian stared at the camera.

“Can we access the recording?””

“Yes,” Clara said.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“There's no need.””

Clara turned to her.

“That camera records continuously.””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“I said there is no need.””

Adrian slowly looked at his wife.

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I just don't think we should humiliate Maya further.””

Maya stared at her.

“I want the camera.””

Adrian looked down.

“What?””

“I want you to watch it.””

Her tiny voice shook.

“Please, Daddy.””

Clara nodded.

“I can bring up the footage in the security room.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Do it.””

Vanessa's expression suddenly hardened.

“Adrian—”

“Do it.””

The security room was down a narrow corridor behind the kitchen.

Clara hurried there while Adrian followed.

Maya stayed close to her father, wiping her tears with the sleeve of her white dress.

Vanessa came behind them.

No one spoke.

Then Clara switched on the monitor.

The footage appeared.

Black-and-white.

Timestamped.

9:02 p.m.

Vanessa walking upstairs.

9:05.

Vanessa entering her bedroom.

9:11.

Vanessa leaving.

9:12.

Maya walking past the hallway.

She never touched the bedroom door.

At 9:13, Vanessa returned.

And then Clara froze the screen.

“There,” she whispered.

Adrian stepped closer.

Maya looked up.

“What is it?””

Clara pointed.

In the corner of the frame, Vanessa was holding something in her hand.

Something long.

Something glittering.

A necklace.

Adrian's face went completely still.

Vanessa's voice came from behind them.

“I can explain.””

No one turned around.

Clara pressed play.

The footage continued.

Vanessa walked to a decorative cabinet at the end of the hallway.

She opened a hidden drawer.

Then she placed the diamond necklace inside.

Maya covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Vanessa had not lost the necklace.

She had hidden it herself.

And when the footage moved forward another fifteen seconds, something even more shocking appeared.

Vanessa looked directly into the security camera.

Then she smiled.

Clara's hand slowly fell away from the controls.

Adrian turned at last.

His expression was no longer confused.

It was something colder.

Something Maya had never seen on her father's face before.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “what exactly were you planning to do?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, somewhere deep inside the mansion, a door slammed.

Then every Halloween light in the house went dark.

And from the front entrance came the sound of a man's voice.

“Adrian?””

May you like

A pause.

“I believe it's time you opened the black folder I brought for you.””
