Chapter 2: The Stranger With the Black Folder

The mansion had never been this quiet.

Not even during the years when Adrian and Maya first moved in.

Not even during the cold winters when the old walls creaked and the wind screamed through the trees outside.

This silence was different.

It was the silence of people who had just witnessed a betrayal.

The security monitor still showed the frozen image of Vanessa looking directly into the camera.

Smiling.

Maya couldn't stop staring at the screen.

Her small hand was wrapped around Clara's fingers.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He was still looking at Vanessa.

The woman who had stood beside him at business dinners.

The woman who had kissed him goodbye every morning.

The woman who had just watched him accuse his own daughter of stealing.

“Vanessa,” Adrian said again, his voice low.

“Why?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

Her expression had changed completely.

The crying, wounded stepmother from the ballroom was gone.

Now she looked calm.

Almost annoyed.

“You're really going to believe a camera over your own wife?””

Adrian stared at her.

“The camera shows you hiding the necklace.””

“You don't know the full story.””

Clara stepped forward.

“The footage shows Maya never touched your room.””

Vanessa looked at her sharply.

“You're just a housekeeper.””

The words were quiet.

But cruel.

Clara's face tightened.

“I have worked in this house since before Maya was born.””

“And?””

“And I know when someone is lying.””

Vanessa laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You think you know everything because you polish silverware and watch people walk through hallways?””

Maya looked up at Clara.

The older woman squeezed her hand.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Enough.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Are you defending her?””

“No.””

Adrian pointed at the screen.

“I'm asking you why you framed my daughter.””

Vanessa's jaw clenched.

For the first time that night, she looked nervous.

But before she could answer, the sound from the entrance echoed again.

“Adrian?””

Everyone turned.

The mansion's enormous front doors stood open.

Rain poured outside.

A tall man stood beneath the porch lights.

He was probably in his late forties, wearing a dark coat despite the warm October night.

In one hand, he carried a black leather folder.

The security guard beside him looked confused.

“I tried to stop him,” the guard said.

“But he said you knew him.””

Adrian walked toward the entrance.

“I don't.””

The stranger looked directly at him.

“Yes, you do.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The man stepped inside and removed his wet coat.

“My name is Daniel Cross.””

Adrian's expression changed slightly.

Not recognition.

Something closer to concern.

“How do you know my name?””

Daniel looked around the mansion.

At the guests.

At the Halloween decorations.

At Vanessa.

Then back at Adrian.

“Because I spent the last three months investigating your wife.””

The room went silent again.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel ignored her.

He opened the black folder.

Inside were photographs, documents, and printed emails.

Maya couldn't see them clearly from where she stood.

But she saw Vanessa's face.

And that was enough.

The color disappeared from her cheeks.

Adrian noticed.

“What is that?””

Daniel handed him the folder.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Of a secret she's been hiding from you.””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“Adrian, don't listen to him.””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Still pretending?””

The guests exchanged nervous looks.

One woman removed her mask completely.

“This is getting out of hand.””

Daniel turned a page in the folder.

“Adrian, your wife didn't just stage tonight's incident.””

He paused.

“She has been planning something much bigger.””

Adrian took the folder.

His hands were steady.

But Maya noticed his breathing change.

He opened the first page.

A photograph.

Vanessa entering a building.

A date.

A location.

Then another photograph.

Vanessa meeting someone.

A man.

Adrian stared.

“Who is this?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Someone you should have met a long time ago.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Adrian, this man is trying to destroy us.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

“He's trying to protect her.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Protect my daughter?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya tightened her grip on Clara's hand.

“Why?””

Daniel's expression softened when he looked at her.

“Because your stepmother has been afraid of one thing since the day you came into this house.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Don't.””

Daniel continued.

“The truth.””

Adrian flipped through more pages.

Bank records.

Messages.

Documents.

His face became harder with every page.

“What am I looking at?””

Daniel answered.

“Money transfers.””

Adrian looked up.

“From where?””

“From an account connected to your company.””

A chill moved through the room.

Adrian owned several businesses.

His financial records were carefully protected.

Only a few people had access.

Vanessa.

His lawyers.

His accountants.

“You're accusing my wife of stealing from me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not just stealing.””

He pointed at the documents.

“Preparing.””

Maya looked between the adults.

She didn't understand everything.

But she understood one thing.

Her father was starting to see the truth.

Then Vanessa did something nobody expected.

She walked toward Maya.

Slowly.

Everyone watched.

“Maya,” she said.

The little girl stepped back.

Vanessa stopped.

“Look at me.””

Maya didn't.

“I said look at me.””

Adrian immediately moved between them.

“No.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You think I'm dangerous now?””

“You lied about my daughter.””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

Adrian's voice rose.

“You watched me believe you.””

Vanessa's eyes became cold.

“You want to know why?””

Nobody spoke.

She looked directly at Maya.

“Because you were always going to choose her.””

Maya blinked.

“What?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You think I don't know?””

Adrian frowned.

“Know what?””

“That no matter what happens, she will always come first.””

The words hung in the air.

Maya looked confused.

But Adrian looked disturbed.

Because there was something hidden in Vanessa's anger.

Something deeper.

Daniel closed the folder.

“That's exactly why you need to see the rest.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What rest?””

Daniel reached into the folder and removed another envelope.

This one was sealed.

“This was found in Vanessa's private storage.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“No.””

For the first time, she sounded afraid.

Adrian noticed.

“What is inside?””

Daniel handed him the envelope.

“You'll want Maya to hear this too.””

Maya looked nervous.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

A photograph that looked at least eight years old.

He held it under the light.

Then he froze.

Maya couldn't see the picture.

But she saw her father's reaction.

His face lost all color.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa remained silent.

“Vanessa.””

Still nothing.

The guests whispered among themselves.

Finally, Adrian turned the photograph around.

Everyone saw it.

Clara gasped.

Maya looked at the picture.

And even at seven years old, she knew something was wrong.

Because in the photograph was a younger Vanessa.

Standing beside a man Maya had never seen before.

And standing between them...

Was a little girl.

A little girl who looked exactly like Maya.

Maya's voice was barely audible.

“That's not me.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian stared at the photograph.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“That's the secret Vanessa has been hiding.””

Thunder cracked outside.

The mansion lights flickered.

Then suddenly—

Every candle in the room went out.

The darkness swallowed the mansion.

May you like

And somewhere upstairs, a woman's voice screamed.

“Someone is in the house!””
