Chapter 9: The Woman Who Thought She Won

Vanessa was already sitting at the table when I arrived.

The same table.

The same window.

The same place where she had watched me lose my marriage.

Except this time, she wasn’t smiling.

She looked exhausted.

Her expensive clothes couldn’t hide it.

Her perfect makeup couldn’t hide it.

She looked like someone who had finally realized the dream she chased was a nightmare.

Daniel sat across from her.

When I walked in, both of them stood.

I raised my hand.

"Sit.""

They did.

That alone told me everything.

Months ago, they controlled the room.

Now they were waiting for me.

Vanessa looked at me.

"I know you hate me.""

I sat down.

"I don't hate you.""

She looked surprised.

"I should.""

"Maybe.""

I looked at her.

"But hate would mean you still have power over me.""

That hurt her.

Good.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because she needed to understand.

She had walked into my home believing she had replaced me.

She needed to know she never had.

Daniel looked at me.

"I owe you an apology.""

I didn’t answer.

He continued.

"I was selfish.""

Again.

A simple word.

Not enough.

But at least it was closer.

"I hurt you.""

"Yes.""

"I hurt Lily.""

"Yes.""

His eyes lowered.

"I don't expect forgiveness.""

I believed him.

For the first time.

Vanessa looked between us.

Then she pushed a folder across the table.

"This is why I called you.""

I opened it.

Inside were copies of emails.

Financial records.

Messages between Ethan and Daniel.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

Because one message changed everything.

*Once Mara gives birth, she will be too distracted to fight.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face was pale.

"You knew?""

He looked down.

"I saw it.""

"When?""

"Before I came home that night.""

The room became silent.

The night he brought Vanessa into my house.

He knew Ethan was manipulating him.

And he still did it.

I closed the folder.

"You knew.""

Daniel’s voice broke.

"I thought I could control it.""

I stared at him.

"You thought you could control a person who was controlling you.""

He had no answer.

Vanessa whispered:

"I didn't know either.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know you were helping destroy a family?""

Her eyes filled.

"I thought he loved me.""

The honesty surprised me.

For a second, I saw the woman behind the arrogance.

Not a winner.

Another person who had been lied to.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What?""

He listened.

Then stood.

"What do you mean he's gone?""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

He ended the call.

"Ethan.""

Claire’s warning immediately returned to my mind.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked terrified.

"He disappeared.""

Vanessa frowned.

"How?""

"He knew.""

I stood.

"Knew what?""

Daniel looked at me.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"He knew we found the evidence.""

My heart sank.

Because Ethan wasn't someone who ran.

People like Ethan didn’t run.

They erased problems.

Daniel looked at me.

"Mara.""

"What?""

"There’s something else.""

I waited.

He reached into his jacket.

And placed a small key on the table.

I recognized it.

My father’s old office key.

"Where did you get that?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Ethan gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"He wanted me to find something.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Daniel looked at the key.

"Proof.""

"Proof of what?""

His eyes met mine.

"That your father knew everything.""

I felt cold.

"What do you mean?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Your father knew Ethan would betray him.""

The same words.

Again.

But this time there was more.

"What else?""

Daniel’s voice dropped.

"He knew I would betray you too.""

The restaurant disappeared.

The sounds.

The people.

Everything.

"What?""

Daniel looked destroyed.

"He left evidence about me.""

My fingers tightened.

"Where?""

Daniel pointed to the key.

"In the office.""

I stood.

"Then we go now.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"You're trusting him?""

I looked at Daniel.

No.

I wasn’t.

Trust was gone.

But truth?

Truth was still worth chasing.

We arrived at my father’s office twenty minutes later.

The building was dark.

Empty.

Too empty.

Daniel unlocked the door.

We stepped inside.

The air felt different.

Like the room had been waiting.

He walked toward the desk.

Then stopped.

"There.""

A hidden compartment.

Behind the bookshelf.

My father’s final secret.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name.

Again.

But this time, there was something else.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

And my entire body froze.

Because the picture was taken years ago.

Before my wedding.

Before Lily.

Before Daniel and Vanessa.

It showed Daniel.

Ethan.

And another person.

Standing together.

Planning something.

A person I recognized immediately.

A person who should never have been there.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then whispered:

"Mara...""

I couldn’t speak.

Because written on the back of the picture were five words.

May you like

Five words that revealed the betrayal had started long before my marriage.

*Your mother knew too.*
