Thinking

Chapter 8: The File My Father Hid

The original file.

Those three words changed everything.

Ethan had spent years preparing.

He had covered tracks.

Created distractions.

Used Daniel’s ego against him.

But one thing he didn’t have.

The one thing everyone searching for power always forgets.

The truth leaves fingerprints.

Ethan stared at me.

"You knew?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

For once, I was telling the truth.

"Daniel found it.""

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did.""

His reaction confused me.

"You sound like you expected this.""

"I expected many things.""

He closed the folder.

"But not him.""

"Why?""

He looked toward the window.

"Because Daniel was never supposed to survive this.""

The room went cold.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?""

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of being exposed.

"Daniel was supposed to take the blame.""

My stomach turned.

The betrayal was worse than I imagined.

"Ethan.""

He stayed silent.

"You used him.""

A small smile appeared.

"Everyone uses everyone.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"That's how you justify yourself.""

He looked at me.

"You think Daniel loved you?""

The question was designed to hurt.

And months ago, it would have.

But not now.

"Not enough.""

My answer surprised him.

I continued:

"But that doesn't make you innocent.""

Ethan looked away.

The door opened.

Claire walked in.

Behind her was Robert.

Ethan’s expression changed.

"You brought him?""

I looked at Robert.

"No.""

Robert stepped forward.

"I came because I need to finish what I should have finished years ago.""

Ethan laughed.

"Now you want to be a hero?""

Robert looked ashamed.

"No.""

He reached into his coat.

"I want to be honest.""

He placed a small envelope on the desk.

Ethan’s face changed.

"What is that?""

Robert looked at me.

"Your father gave me this before he died.""

My breath caught.

"You had another letter?""

Robert nodded.

"I was supposed to give it to you if Daniel ever betrayed you.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid.""

I looked at the envelope.

"Everyone was afraid.""

Robert accepted that.

"Yes.""

I picked it up.

My father's handwriting was on the front.

My name.

Again.

I opened it.

*Mara,*

*If this letter reaches you, then the person I feared has shown you who he truly is.*

I swallowed.

*But remember something important. Betrayal is not proof that you are weak. It is proof that someone saw your trust as something they could exploit.*

My eyes blurred.

*Daniel may hurt you. Ethan may deceive you. But neither of them owns your future.*

I stopped.

Then read the next line.

*There is one final protection I created.*

My heart raced.

*Not for the company.*

I turned the page.

*For you.*

I looked up.

Ethan had gone pale.

He knew.

"What protection?"" Claire asked.

I continued reading.

*The person trying to control your life believes they understand your assets. They do not understand your greatest asset.*

The next sentence made me freeze.

*You.*

I stared at the paper.

My father had never wanted me to inherit an empire.

He wanted me to understand I was one.

The final page contained instructions.

A transfer.

A legal authority.

A clause that activated only if someone attempted to manipulate ownership through deception.

Ethan had triggered it himself.

Claire read the page.

Then smiled.

"He did it.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"Ethan created the exact conditions your father prepared for.""

The silence was broken by Ethan’s voice.

"No.""

He stepped forward.

"No, this isn't possible.""

I looked at him.

"You spent years believing you knew my father.""

I folded the letter.

"But you never understood him.""

His face turned angry.

"You think you won?""

"No.""

I walked toward the door.

"I think you lost.""

Outside the office, my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*I found Vanessa. She wants to talk to you.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*She says she knows who actually betrayed you.*

I looked back through the glass wall.

Ethan was still standing inside.

Alone.

For the first time.

But something felt wrong.

Because if Vanessa had information...

Why had she waited until now?

I typed one response.

*Where?*

Daniel answered immediately.

*The place where everything started.*

I knew exactly what he meant.

The restaurant.

The place where Daniel proposed.

May you like

The place where our marriage began.

And now, apparently, the place where the final truth would come out.
