Chapter 3: The Game He Started
Daniel always believed he was smarter than everyone else.
That was his weakness.
People who think they are unbeatable rarely notice the moment they become vulnerable.
Three days after Claire’s warning, Daniel showed up at my house.
Alone.
No suitcase.
No Vanessa.
No fake confidence.
Just Daniel.
He stood outside my door wearing the navy suit I bought him for our anniversary.
For one second, I remembered the man he used to be.
Then I remembered the ring on Vanessa’s finger.
I kept the door locked.
"What do you want?""
His eyes looked tired.
"I need to explain.""
"No.""
"Mara, please.""
I almost admired his persistence.
Almost.
"You had months to explain.""
He looked down.
"I know.""
The old version of Daniel would have apologized.
This version was calculating.
"I made mistakes.""
I laughed softly.
"That's what you call it?""
He stepped closer to the door.
"I was unhappy.""
There it was.
The excuse.
The one cheaters always reached for.
"I was lonely.""
I stared at him.
"While I was pregnant?""
His silence answered.
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I didn't plan for this to happen.""
"You planned enough to bring her here.""
His jaw tightened.
"Vanessa and I—"
"Don't.""
I held up my hand.
"Don't say her name like this is some beautiful love story.""
He looked angry.
"You don't know what happened between us.""
"I know enough.""
"No, you don't.""
His voice rose.
"You think you know everything because Claire is feeding you information.""
I opened the door slightly.
"Actually, Daniel, I know because you left evidence everywhere.""
His expression changed.
"What?""
I smiled.
"Did you really think company emails disappear?""
For the first time, fear crossed his face.
Small.
Quick.
But I saw it.
And so did he.
"You went through my emails?""
"No.""
I leaned against the door.
"I own the system you used.""
He froze.
Daniel had spent years telling people he built his company from nothing.
He forgot who paid for the first building.
Who covered payroll during the first difficult year.
Who signed the contracts when banks refused to trust him.
Me.
But I never needed credit.
I loved him.
That was my mistake.
"You can't do this," he said.
"Do what?""
"Destroy my career.""
I stared at him.
"You destroyed our family.""
He looked away.
Then he whispered:
"Vanessa made mistakes too.""
I almost laughed.
"You're blaming her now?""
His silence told me everything.
The perfect couple was already cracking.
Interesting.
"You know what your biggest problem is, Daniel?""
"What?""
"You think everyone is like you.""
His face hardened.
"I came here to fix things.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You came here because you realized leaving me was easier than fighting me.""
He said nothing.
Because it was true.
After he left, I sat in Lily’s nursery.
The room was painted soft yellow.
Daniel painted the walls himself.
He had gotten paint everywhere.
I smiled at the memory.
Then cried.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I missed the person I thought he was.
There was a difference.
That night, Claire came over.
She placed another folder on the table.
"This is important.""
I opened it.
Inside were printed messages.
Daniel and Vanessa.
My hands went cold.
"When did you get these?""
"Yesterday.""
I read the first message.
*Once Mara signs, we control everything.*
The second:
*She'll be too overwhelmed with the baby to fight.*
The third:
*Daniel, are you sure the trust won't protect her?*
And Daniel’s response:
*She doesn't understand the documents. She never has.*
I stared at those words.
Something inside me became completely still.
Not broken.
Still.
Claire watched me carefully.
"Mara?""
I closed the folder.
"I want to see them.""
"Who?""
"Daniel and Vanessa.""
Claire frowned.
"Why?""
I looked toward Lily’s room.
"Because they think they know the ending.""
I stood.
"But they don't.""
Two weeks later, Daniel and Vanessa agreed to meet at a restaurant.
The same restaurant where Daniel proposed.
I chose the table by the window.
When they arrived, Vanessa smiled.
She actually smiled.
Like she was walking into a victory celebration.
"Mara," she said.
I looked at the ring on her finger.
Then at Daniel.
He looked nervous.
Good.
Vanessa sat down.
"I hope we can finally move forward.""
I picked up my water glass.
"I agree.""
Daniel looked surprised.
"You do?""
I smiled.
"Yes.""
Vanessa relaxed.
Then I placed a folder on the table.
Her expression changed.
"What is that?""
I looked at Daniel.
"The truth.""
His face tightened.
"Mara—"
I opened the folder.
And placed the first page between us.
Vanessa read it.
The color slowly disappeared from her face.
Because it wasn't divorce paperwork.
It wasn't a lawsuit.
It was something they never expected.
A document with Daniel’s signature.
A signature he had given months earlier.
A signature that proved he had transferred ownership of something he thought he controlled.
Vanessa looked up.
"What did you do?""
I smiled.
The same smile she gave me when she walked into my house.
Only now she understood.
It was my turn.
Daniel stared at the papers.
Then at me.
"Mara...""
His voice shook.
"Where did you get this?""
I tilted my head.
"From you.""
He went completely silent.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And the name appearing there made his entire face change.
Because it was the one person he never expected to call.
My father’s old business partner.
The man who knew every secret Daniel had hidden.
Daniel answered.
"Hello?""
A pause.
Then his face went white.
I watched him listen.
And I knew.
May you like
The game had finally begun.
But I had no idea the next words from that phone call would reveal the secret my own husband had been hiding from me.
