Thinking

Chapter 5: The Enemy I Never Saw

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was thinking.

There is a difference.

Fear makes you freeze.

Thinking makes you dangerous.

The message stayed open on my phone for hours.

*Ask him why your father never trusted him.*

My father.

The one person who always saw through people.

The man who taught me that kindness and intelligence were not opposites.

I remembered something he told me before he died.

"Marriage is not proven when life is easy, Mara. Anyone can love sunshine. Watch who stays when the storm comes.""

At the time, I thought he was talking about hardship.

I never imagined he was warning me about my own husband.

The next morning, I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

"I was waiting for you to call.""

I sat at my kitchen table.

"Lately everyone seems to know things I don't.""

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

"Your father was worried about Daniel.""

I closed my eyes.

"How long?""

"A while.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father asked me not to.""

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

"Why?""

"Because he believed you loved Daniel.""

The answer hurt because it was true.

Claire continued.

"He didn't want to destroy your marriage based on suspicion.""

"What kind of suspicion?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than the answer.

"Mara, your father noticed financial inconsistencies.""

I stood.

"What kind?""

"Small ones.""

"Small?""

"At first.""

I walked toward the window.

"Claire.""

She sighed.

"Daniel wasn't stealing from the company.""

"Then what?""

"He was preparing.""

That word made my stomach turn.

"Preparing for what?""

A silence.

Then:

"To leave.""

I gripped the counter.

"He planned this?""

"We don't know everything.""

"But you know something.""

Claire didn't deny it.

"I know your father created additional protections after he discovered Daniel had been asking questions about your inheritance.""

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

"So he wasn't just cheating.""

"No.""

Claire's voice was gentle.

"He was building a future where he didn't need you.""

I looked around my house.

The nursery.

The photos.

The life I thought we had.

It suddenly felt like a stage set.

Beautiful.

But fake.

That afternoon, I drove to my father’s old office.

It had been closed since his death.

I rarely went there.

Too many memories.

The smell of old leather.

The wooden shelves.

The desk where he spent decades building everything.

I unlocked the door.

Dust floated through the sunlight.

I walked behind the desk.

For the first time, I noticed the small drawer on the side.

My father had always kept it locked.

Inside was a letter.

My name was written on the envelope.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

*Mara,*

*If you are reading this, something happened that made you question the people around you.*

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

He knew.

Maybe not exactly.

But he knew.

*I hope I am wrong. I hope the person I worry about proves me foolish.*

I sat down.

*But if Daniel ever chooses power over love, remember this: the greatest mistake arrogant people make is believing they are the only ones planning.*

I read the next line.

And my entire body went cold.

*There is someone else helping him.*

Someone else.

Not Vanessa.

Someone behind Daniel.

Someone who understood the company.

Someone who knew my family.

I flipped the page.

There was only one name.

I whispered it aloud.

"No.""

The office suddenly felt smaller.

Because the name belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had attended my wedding.

Someone who had held my daughter.

My phone rang.

I answered without looking.

"Mara?""

Daniel.

I almost hung up.

Then I heard his voice.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Terrified.

"I need your help.""

I stared at my father's letter.

The timing was too perfect.

"What happened?""

A pause.

Then he said:

"Vanessa disappeared.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She took documents from my office.""

I stood.

"What documents?""

His voice dropped.

"The ones proving she wasn't working alone.""

I looked back at my father's letter.

The name on the page suddenly felt heavier.

"Daniel.""

"What?""

"Who was helping you?""

Silence.

Too long.

"Daniel.""

Finally, he answered.

And the name he said made me understand everything.

"It was...""

Before he could finish, the line went dead.

I looked at my phone.

Then at the letter.

Then at the door.

May you like

Because someone was standing outside my house.

Watching.
