Chapter 9: The Witness Who Disappeared
The name stayed in the air.
Ryan Mercer.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept it.
Not because I didn’t believe Alexander.
Because I didn’t want to.
There was a difference.
Believing someone had betrayed you was painful.
Accepting that they might have been involved in something much darker was something else entirely.
I looked at Alexander.
“Ryan was there?””
He nodded.
“The night your father died.””
Emily closed her eyes.
She looked like she had been expecting this moment for years.
“Tell me everything.””
Alexander didn’t speak.
Not immediately.
And that scared me.
Because until now, he had always been the person with answers.
The person who seemed prepared.
Now he looked like a man standing in front of a fire he had failed to stop.
“Nine years ago,” he began, “Thomas discovered Robert Mercer had been moving company assets into hidden accounts.””
I listened.
“Your father knew exposing Robert would destroy Mercer Urban Development.””
“Then why expose him?””
“Because he believed a company built on lies would eventually destroy everyone connected to it.””
That sounded like my father.
He always believed doing the right thing mattered more than doing the easy thing.
“What did Ryan know?””
Alexander looked down.
“Ryan knew his father was in trouble.””
“Because Robert told him?””
“Yes.””
“And Ryan helped him?””
Emily answered this time.
“At first, I don’t think he understood what he was helping.””
I looked at her.
“You’re defending him?””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“I’m explaining him.””
I didn’t like that.
But I understood.
There was a difference.
“What happened that night?””
Alexander walked toward the window.
“Thomas asked me to meet him at Mercer Urban Development headquarters.””
“Why?””
“He wanted me to take custody of the evidence.””
My heart tightened.
“The evidence my father left?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“I arrived at 10:15 p.m.””
He paused.
“Thomas was already there.””
“Was Ryan there?””
“Yes.””
I held my breath.
“What was he doing?””
Alexander’s face hardened.
“He was arguing with his father.””
“About what?””
“About the evidence.””
The room became silent.
“Ryan knew?””
“He knew enough.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The memories came back.
Ryan talking about his father.
Ryan always saying he hated weakness.
Ryan always saying the Mercer name was everything.
Maybe I had mistaken ambition for confidence.
Maybe I had mistaken control for love.
“What did Ryan say?””
Alexander’s eyes moved to the photograph.
“He told Robert he couldn’t keep covering for him.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like someone helping him.””
“No.””
Alexander looked at me.
“That’s why I believe Ryan’s story changed after that night.””
“What story?””
“He originally wanted to stop his father.””
The words surprised me.
“Then what happened?””
“Robert realized Ryan was turning against him.””
Emily stepped forward.
“And Robert knew exactly how to control his son.””
“How?””
She looked at me.
“Fear.””
The answer was simple.
But I understood.
People like Robert Mercer didn’t need to force people physically.
They controlled people by making them afraid of losing everything.
“What did Robert threaten?””
Emily’s face became pale.
“Ryan’s future.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Robert told him if he cooperated with Thomas, he would lose everything.””
“The company?””
“More than that.””
She looked down.
“His mother.””
Silence.
“Emily?””
She took a breath.
“Robert had spent years hiding money and creating legal problems. If he went down, he could make sure Ryan and I went down with him.””
I stared.
“So Ryan chose himself.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt because it sounded exactly like him.
Alexander continued.
“After that night, Ryan changed.””
“How?””
“He stopped asking questions.””
“And my father?””
Alexander’s voice lowered.
“He disappeared.””
I froze.
“You said he died.””
“He did.””
“But you said he disappeared.””
Alexander looked at me.
“Because we never found the complete truth.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What does that mean?””
He walked back to the desk.
“Your father’s official cause of death was a heart attack.””
“I know.””
“But there was another report.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What report?””
“A private investigation.””
“Who ordered it?””
Emily looked at me.
“I did.””
That surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I knew Robert.””
She swallowed.
“And I knew Thomas.””
She looked at the photograph.
“Your father was not a man who simply gave up.””
“What did the investigation find?””
Alexander opened another folder.
Inside was a document.
A report.
I picked it up.
The first page contained my father’s name.
The second page contained a sentence that made my hands go cold.
*Evidence suggests Mr. Bennett may have been exposed to a substance capable of causing cardiac distress.*
I looked up.
“You knew?””
Alexander nodded.
“We suspected.””
“Suspected my father was murdered?””
“Yes.””
“And nobody told me?””
Emily’s eyes filled with regret.
“We were trying to find proof.””
“For nine years?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
Again.
That painful laugh.
“Nine years.””
I looked at all of them.
“Nine years I thought I lost my father.””
My voice cracked.
“And you all knew there was a possibility someone took him from me.””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Another message.
This time from Ryan.
*You’re asking questions you don’t understand.*
My blood went cold.
Another message appeared.
*Your father made the same mistake.*
I stared.
Alexander saw the screen.
“Don’t respond.””
I ignored him.
I typed.
*What mistake?*
The reply came immediately.
*Trusting the wrong people.*
I felt my anger rise.
I typed:
*Were you there the night he died?*
The typing bubble appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*Yes.*
My entire body went still.
Alexander stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
I showed him.
Emily covered her mouth.
“He admitted it.””
“No.””
Alexander shook his head.
“Not necessarily.””
I looked at him.
“He said yes.””
“Claire, think.””
I hated that he was right.
Ryan could manipulate words better than anyone.
“What does he mean?””
Alexander looked at the message.
“He might mean he was there.””
“He was.””
“Yes.””
“Then what else?””
Alexander was silent.
Then:
“He might mean he knows more than he told us.””
A new message arrived.
From Ryan.
This one had an attachment.
A video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed an old security recording.
Black and white.
Grainy.
A hallway.
Mercer Urban Development.
The date.
Nine years ago.
The night my father died.
A man entered the frame.
My father.
Thomas Bennett.
Behind him…
Ryan.
They walked together.
Then another figure appeared.
A man.
I recognized him immediately.
Robert Mercer.
The three men entered a conference room.
The video continued.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Twenty.
Then Ryan walked out alone.
My breath caught.
The video ended.
No explanation.
No context.
Just one final message from Ryan.
*Now you know why your father wanted me destroyed.*
I looked at Alexander.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he was staring at the screen.
At the final frame.
The moment before the video ended.
A reflection in the glass.
A fourth person standing outside the conference room.
Someone watching them.
Someone who had been there the entire time.
Emily stepped closer.
Her face drained of color.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know who that is.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice said otherwise.
“Emily.””
She looked at the image.
Then whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is it?””
Her hands trembled.
“Because that person…”
She stopped.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Emily looked at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of my family history.
“That’s your father’s lawyer.””
I frowned.
“My father’s lawyer died years ago.””
Emily nodded.
“That’s why it’s impossible.””
The room went silent.
Alexander stared at the screen.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Claire…”
I looked at him.
“Your father’s lawyer didn’t die nine years ago.””
A pause.
“He disappeared.””
The lights in the office suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked toward the door.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was walking toward us.
Emily whispered:
“He found us.””
The door handle moved.
And a voice came from the other side.
A voice I had never heard before.
But everyone else recognized.
“Alexander.””
The door opened.
“After all these years…”
May you like
A man stepped inside.
“…you finally told her the truth.””
