Chapter 8: The Death My Father Never Explained

The room went silent.

Not the kind of silence that came from shock.

The kind that came when everyone suddenly realized the rules had changed.

Emily Mercer stood in the doorway, rainwater still clinging to the shoulders of her dark coat.

She looked nothing like Vanessa.

No perfect smile.

No polished performance.

No attempt to appear harmless.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too many years.

Her eyes moved from Alexander to me.

Then to the documents spread across the desk.

“You found them,” she said quietly.

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

Emily didn’t deny it.

That was somehow worse.

“You knew about my father’s files.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Ryan was trying to take it from me.””

Her expression changed.

A flash of pain crossed her face.

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And you did nothing?””

The question echoed through the office.

Emily lowered her eyes.

“I tried.””

I almost laughed.

“Try harder.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

But I didn’t care.

Everyone kept telling me they were protecting me.

My father.

Alexander.

Now Emily.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had reasons.

And somehow, I was always the last person to know what was happening in my own life.

Emily walked slowly into the room.

“Your anger is justified.””

“I don’t need permission to be angry.””

“No.””

She nodded.

“You don’t.””

For some reason, that made me stop.

Because Ryan never spoke like that.

Ryan always explained my emotions.

You’re overreacting.

You’re too sensitive.

You don’t understand.

Emily didn’t.

She simply accepted them.

Alexander remained silent.

That bothered me.

He knew something.

Something important.

“What happened to my father?””

Emily looked at me.

“I told you.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You said he didn’t die by accident.””

The room became still.

“Explain.””

Emily took a deep breath.

“Your father was investigating Robert Mercer.””

I looked at Alexander.

“I know.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“You know the business side.””

Her voice lowered.

“You don’t know what happened at the end.””

I felt a chill.

“What happened?””

Emily looked toward the window.

“Nine years ago, Thomas discovered Robert had been hiding money for years.””

“Through the company?””

“Yes.””

“And Ryan knew?””

“Not then.””

“Then who did?””

Emily hesitated.

“Me.””

The answer stunned me.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Robert told me.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because he trusted me.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“He trusted me because he thought I was like him.””

I didn’t understand.

“Like him?””

“Someone who cared more about winning than being right.””

The words surprised me.

Emily looked down.

“But I wasn’t.””

A long pause.

“I helped Thomas.””

Alexander finally spoke.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

“It’s time.””

The two of them exchanged a look.

A look between people who had been carrying the same secret for years.

I noticed.

And I hated that I noticed.

“What?””

Emily turned back to me.

“Your father didn’t just leave you the trust.””

“What else?””

“He left you evidence.””

I frowned.

“Evidence of what?””

“Everything.””

She stepped closer.

“Robert Mercer’s fraud. The hidden accounts. The illegal transfers. Every person involved.””

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t he release it?””

“Because he wanted Ryan to have a chance.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Everyone had believed Ryan could be saved.

Everyone except me.

“What happened after that?””

Emily’s expression changed.

“Robert found out.””

The room felt colder.

“He knew Thomas was going to expose him.””

“And?””

“And three days later, your father died.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Alexander.

His face was unreadable.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“Alexander.””

Finally, he nodded.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew my father might have been killed?””

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

My voice rose.

“And you let me believe he just had a heart attack?””

Alexander looked away.

“I didn’t have proof.””

“No proof?””

I stepped back.

“You had nine years.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand.

I had spent nine years grieving someone while everyone around me held pieces of the truth.

Alexander’s voice was quiet.

“Your father made me promise something.””

“What?””

“Never tell you until you were safe.””

I stared.

“Safe?””

He looked at me.

“From Ryan.””

That name again.

Everything always came back to Ryan.

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Emily spoke softly.

“Ryan wasn’t supposed to become like his father.””

I looked at her.

“He chose to.””

“Yes.””

She looked sad.

“But Robert spent years teaching him that power mattered more than people.””

I thought about Ryan.

The way he talked.

The way he controlled conversations.

The way he smiled when I signed my own divorce papers.

Then I thought about something else.

The first years.

The early years.

Before money.

Before success.

Before Mercer Urban became an empire.

Was Ryan always pretending?

Or did he become someone else?

A notification interrupted the silence.

Alexander’s assistant entered quickly.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

“What happened?””

“We found the source of the lawsuit.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Mercer Urban Development’s legal department.””

Alexander frowned.

“Impossible.””

“Not exactly.””

She handed him a tablet.

“The filing was submitted using old corporate authorization.””

I looked at Emily.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She whispered:

“Robert.””

“But he’s dead.””

Emily’s eyes remained fixed on the screen.

“Yes.””

A terrible realization crossed her face.

“Which means someone has access to his old authority.””

The room went silent.

Ryan.

No.

Someone else.

Someone who had been waiting.

Someone who knew every hidden door inside Mercer Urban Development.

My phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

This time, no words.

Just a photo.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was my father.

Not an old family photo.

A security image.

My father walking into a building.

A building I recognized.

Mercer Urban Development headquarters.

The date was three days before his death.

Below the image was one sentence.

*Ask Alexander what happened that night.*

I looked up slowly.

Alexander saw my face.

“What is it?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He stared at the image.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

“Alexander.””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Emily looked at him.

“You have to.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“That night…”

The office seemed to stop breathing.

“I wasn’t trying to protect your father.””

My heart sank.

“What were you doing?””

He looked at me.

“I was trying to stop him.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

“You were against him?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because Thomas was going to confront Robert.””

“And?””

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“I knew Robert would destroy anyone who threatened him.””

My voice became quiet.

“So you stopped my father?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“I arrived too late.””

Silence.

“And when I got there…”

He swallowed.

“Your father was already gone.””

I stared.

“Gone?””

“Yes.””

“Gone how?””

Alexander looked at me.

And his answer changed everything.

“Because when I found him…”

A pause.

“He wasn’t alone.””

My breath stopped.

“Who was with him?””

Alexander looked toward Emily.

Then back at me.

“The last person your father trusted.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

May you like

Alexander’s voice was barely audible.

“Ryan Mercer.””
