Chapter 7: The Enemy Wearing a Friendly Face
Ryan’s words played again and again.
*“The real person behind this betrayal is Alexander Whitmore.””*
The news anchor continued speaking, but I barely heard her.
The room felt distant.
The television screen showed Ryan standing outside Mercer Urban Development headquarters, surrounded by reporters.
He looked calm.
Controlled.
Concerned.
The same expression he wore when he wanted people to believe he was the reasonable one.
The good man.
The victim.
Beside him, Vanessa stood with her hand lightly touching his arm.
A perfect image.
A powerful CEO defending himself.
A loyal girlfriend standing beside him.
And me?
The abandoned wife.
The greedy woman.
The person everyone would assume was desperate for money.
I looked at Alexander.
For the first time since I met him, I wondered if I had made a mistake.
Not because I believed Ryan.
But because I had spent my entire day accepting one stranger’s version of the truth.
A billionaire appeared out of nowhere.
He knew my father.
He knew my marriage.
He knew my secrets.
And now my ex-husband was telling the world that he was the villain.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
The question left my mouth before I could stop it.
Alexander didn’t react.
He simply looked at me.
“I was waiting for you to ask.””
That answer bothered me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your instincts are better than Ryan thinks they are.””
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Make me feel like I’m part of some plan.””
The room went quiet.
Alexander lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
I wasn’t expecting that.
“I should have told you everything before bringing you here.””
“Yes.””
“But there were things your father wanted kept hidden until you were ready.””
I shook my head.
“My father has been dead for nine years. I’m tired of everyone making decisions for me because they think they know what’s best.””
The words came out stronger than I expected.
Alexander didn’t argue.
Instead, he nodded.
“You have every right to be angry.””
That made me angrier.
Because I didn’t want understanding.
I wanted answers.
“Start with the truth.””
He walked toward the desk and turned off the television.
“Your father trusted me with something.””
“What?””
“The truth about Ryan Mercer.””
I crossed my arms.
“I already know Ryan cheated on me.””
“No.””
Alexander looked at me.
“You know Ryan cheated on you.””
A pause.
“You don’t know why.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Vanessa wasn’t the reason your marriage ended.””
I stared.
“She was sleeping with my husband.””
“Yes.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Vanessa was a piece of the plan.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Whose plan?””
Alexander didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Robert Mercer’s.””
The name again.
Ryan’s father.
A dead man still controlling my life.
“But Robert has been dead for years.””
“Yes.””
“So how?””
Alexander walked to the window.
“Because people like Robert don’t need to be alive to influence others.””
I hated how much sense that made.
“What did he want?””
“Control.””
“Of what?””
Alexander looked at me.
“The Bennett Trust.””
I exhaled slowly.
“Why?””
“Because your father built something Robert couldn’t buy.””
“What?””
“Independence.””
I waited.
“Thomas Bennett created the trust so no single person could control the company. Not him. Not Robert. Not even you.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
He opened another file.
“Your father believed power changed people. So he created restrictions.””
I read through the document.
The legal language was complicated, but one sentence stood out.
*No individual beneficiary may transfer control without full disclosure of financial interests and intent.*
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
“It means Ryan couldn’t take control by convincing you to sign away assets.””
“But I signed.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Alexander pointed to the document.
“You signed under false information.””
I understood.
“The divorce papers.””
“Exactly.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Ryan thought he was getting everything.””
“He thought he could force the transfer.””
“But he couldn’t.””
“No.””
I looked at the documents.
“So what does he actually have?””
Alexander’s expression became serious.
“Nothing.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Not happiness.
Not relief.
Something else.
Clarity.
Ryan had spent months making me believe I was powerless.
But he had never actually won.
He had just convinced me that I lost.
A knock came at the door.
Alexander’s assistant entered.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
“Yes?””
“We found the source of the leak.””
Alexander turned.
“Who?””
The assistant looked at me.
Then answered.
“Someone inside Mercer Urban Development.””
My stomach tightened.
“Vanessa?””
“No.””
That surprised me.
“Then who?””
The assistant hesitated.
“Emily Mercer.””
Ryan’s mother.
Again.
The woman who helped create the trust.
The woman whose signature appeared beside my father’s.
The woman who was now exposing me.
I looked at Alexander.
“She’s the one who sent the document.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
That was the first time Alexander admitted uncertainty.
And somehow, that scared me more.
“Then we need to find out.””
Alexander nodded.
“We do.””
My phone rang.
David.
I answered.
“Hello?””
“Claire, where are you?””
“Still with Alexander.””
His voice changed.
“That might be a problem.””
“Why?””
“Because the media is outside.””
I looked toward the windows.
Far below, I could see movement.
Cameras.
People gathering.
“Already?””
“Yes.””
“How did they know?””
Silence.
Then David said:
“Someone gave them your name.””
I looked at Alexander.
He already understood.
Someone wanted me exposed.
Someone wanted the world watching.
The question was why.
Alexander’s assistant rushed back inside.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Her face was pale.
“What now?””
“The police have issued another request.””
My heart dropped.
“For me?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Alexander.
“For you.””
The room became silent.
Alexander didn’t move.
“What accusation?””
She handed him a document.
He read it.
Then slowly folded it.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
“Fraud.””
I frowned.
“Against you?””
“Yes.””
“Ryan filed charges against you?””
“No.””
Alexander looked at the document.
“Someone else did.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Thomas Bennett.””
I froze.
“What?””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he file anything?””
Alexander looked at the paperwork again.
“Because the complaint was filed years ago.””
I stared.
“Years?””
“Yes.””
“Against you?””
He nodded.
My mind raced.
My father trusted Alexander.
My father created the trust with Emily Mercer.
My father left warnings about Ryan.
And now there was a hidden legal complaint against the very man helping me.
None of it made sense.
Unless…
Unless I didn’t know who the players really were.
“Alexander.””
He looked at me.
“What happened between you and my father?””
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
Not guilty.
But haunted.
“There’s something I never told you.””
The words made the room feel smaller.
“What?””
He walked back to the desk.
Picked up the old photograph.
The one with my father and the Mercers.
Then he turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And a sentence.
I had never noticed it before.
Alexander handed it to me.
My fingers shook as I read.
*If Alexander ever comes to Claire, it means he failed to protect her.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander’s voice was quiet.
“Your father knew this day might come.””
“But why would he say you failed?””
He looked away.
“Because I did.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you do?””
A long silence followed.
Then Alexander finally answered.
“Nine years ago…”
He swallowed.
“I was the one who helped Ryan Mercer get close to you.””
I froze.
The room disappeared.
The billionaire who claimed he was protecting me.
The man my father trusted.
The man who arrived when my marriage collapsed.
Had been the reason Ryan entered my life.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Alexander didn’t move.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You introduced me to him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
And his answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“Because your father thought Ryan could become a better man.””
A pause.
“But I was wrong.””
The door behind us suddenly opened.
A security officer rushed inside.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Everyone turned.
“There’s someone downstairs.””
“Who?””
The officer looked at me.
“A woman.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The officer hesitated.
Then said:
“She says she’s Ryan Mercer’s mother.””
Alexander went completely still.
And then Emily Mercer walked into the room.
The woman whose signature was hidden in my father’s documents.
The woman who knew the truth.
She looked directly at me.
May you like
And the first words out of her mouth were:
“Claire Bennett, your father did not die by accident.””
