Chapter 6: The Evidence Ryan Never Expected
The detective’s voice echoed through the office.
“You’re being accused of corporate theft.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Alexander.
Not even the detective.
It was strange how quickly a person’s life could change.
A few hours earlier, I had been a divorced woman standing in the rain with two suitcases.
Now I was standing inside a billionaire’s office with a police warrant bearing my name.
And somehow, Ryan Mercer was still controlling the story.
I looked at the detective.
“What exactly am I accused of stealing?””
The detective opened the folder in his hands.
“Confidential business records belonging to Mercer Urban Development.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“I don’t have any Mercer documents.””
The detective glanced down.
“According to the complaint, you removed them before leaving your marital residence.””
My heart sank.
The house.
Ryan’s house.
The place he gave me forty minutes to empty.
“He searched my belongings?””
The detective didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
That was answer enough.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Detective, this accusation was filed less than an hour after a divorce agreement was signed.””
The detective looked at him.
“Mr. Whitmore, I understand your concern.””
“No.””
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“You understand the accusation. You do not understand the evidence.””
The detective’s expression stayed neutral.
“Mr. Mercer provided evidence.””
My stomach tightened.
“What evidence?””
The detective hesitated.
Then he said:
“Security footage.””
I felt a chill.
“From where?””
“Your former residence.””
Of course.
Ryan had cameras.
The house.
The company.
Everywhere.
He loved control.
The detective continued.
“The footage shows you removing several boxes of documents from the property.””
I stared.
“Boxes?””
“Yes.””
“That wasn’t company property.””
“Then what was it?””
“My personal belongings.””
The detective looked at his notes.
“Mr. Mercer claims those boxes contained confidential files related to Mercer Urban Development.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He’s lying.””
The detective didn’t react.
“That’s something you’ll have to establish.””
The sentence was professional.
Neutral.
But it still felt like a door closing.
I looked at Alexander.
He seemed unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Ryan planned this carefully.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“You don’t understand how carefully.””
He turned toward the detective.
“May I see the warrant?””
The detective handed it over.
Alexander read it slowly.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The warrant lists the items allegedly stolen.””
“And?””
“There are five boxes.””
I frowned.
“Five?””
“Yes.””
“I only took two suitcases.””
The detective looked between us.
“Where are the boxes now?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Alexander handed the warrant back.
“Then the accusation has a problem.””
The detective raised an eyebrow.
“Which is?””
“If Claire removed five boxes from the property, there should be a record of five boxes leaving.””
The detective didn’t respond.
Alexander continued.
“Not just a claim.””
The room became silent.
Then the detective’s radio crackled.
He stepped away to answer.
I turned to Alexander.
“You knew something was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Ryan doesn’t make mistakes.””
I frowned.
“That sounds like you respect him.””
“No.””
Alexander looked at me.
“I understand him.””
That was somehow worse.
The detective returned a moment later.
His expression had changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
“Ms. Bennett.””
“Yes?””
“We need you to answer some questions.””
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this time.””
The relief lasted one second.
Then disappeared.
Because I knew what Ryan wanted.
He didn’t need me arrested.
He needed me suspected.
He needed people to look at me differently.
He needed my name damaged.
I followed the detective to a conference room downstairs.
Alexander came with me.
The detective placed a file on the table.
Inside were photographs.
My old house.
My old office.
Boxes.
Documents.
And there I was.
Walking through the front door.
I stared.
“That’s not possible.””
The detective looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because that picture was taken after I left.””
He flipped to another page.
“Time stamp says otherwise.””
I leaned closer.
The photograph showed me entering the house.
Holding my purse.
Wearing the same coat I wore that afternoon.
The day of the divorce.
But something felt wrong.
Something I couldn’t explain.
Then I saw it.
The necklace.
I touched my throat.
My mother’s necklace.
I wasn’t wearing it that day.
I always wore it.
Except when—
My eyes widened.
“Wait.””
The detective looked up.
“What?””
“That photograph is fake.””
The room became still.
The detective frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I wasn’t wearing that necklace.””
He looked at the picture.
Then back at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Claire never removes that necklace.””
I looked at him.
Surprised.
“How do you know?””
“Your father mentioned it.””
The detective studied the photograph.
“A necklace doesn’t prove a picture is fake.””
“No.””
I pointed.
“But the shadow does.””
Everyone looked.
I moved closer.
“The light is coming from the left.””
I pointed at the image.
“But the shadow on my body falls in the opposite direction.””
The detective stared.
“You’re saying it was edited?””
“I’m saying someone changed something.””
Alexander took the photograph.
His eyes narrowed.
“This isn’t the only problem.””
“What?””
He pointed to the background.
“The painting.””
I looked.
A large painting hung behind me.
I recognized it immediately.
It was from Ryan’s office.
Not our house.
My heart dropped.
“He used a photograph from somewhere else.””
The detective took the evidence folder.
He looked uncomfortable now.
Because the story was changing.
And that was the one thing people like Ryan hated.
Losing control of the story.
The detective stood.
“We’ll need to verify this.””
When he left, I finally exhaled.
But Alexander wasn’t relieved.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“This was a test.””
“A test?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“To see if you would panic.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Ryan needed to know whether you had found the trust documents.””
I looked at him.
“And now?””
“Now he knows.””
I felt anger rise.
“He’s been watching me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Because Ryan was afraid.
A man who had everything didn’t destroy someone unless he was afraid of losing something.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You should have stayed quiet.*
My blood ran cold.
Alexander saw my face.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it.
Then his expression changed.
“Claire.””
“What?””
“This isn’t Ryan.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Ryan wants you afraid.””
He looked at the message.
“This person wants you silent.””
A new message appeared.
This time with an attachment.
A document.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first page loaded.
A signature.
A name.
A date.
My father’s signature.
But beneath it was another name.
One I had never expected.
I whispered:
“No.””
Alexander looked over my shoulder.
His face turned pale.
“What?””
I stared at the document.
Because it revealed the truth my father had hidden.
The truth Ryan had spent nine years protecting.
The truth that connected everything.
My father hadn’t only created the Bennett Trust.
He had created it with someone else.
Someone inside the Mercer family.
Someone who had been helping him all along.
At the bottom of the agreement was a signature.
*Emily Mercer.*
Ryan’s mother.
I looked at Alexander.
“Why would Ryan’s mother help my father?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
Because before he could…
The office television turned on.
A news report appeared.
The reporter stood outside Mercer Urban Development headquarters.
Behind her was Ryan.
And beside him…
Vanessa.
The headline flashed across the screen.
*RYAN MERCER CLAIMS EX-WIFE AND WHITMORE FOUNDATION CONSPIRED AGAINST HIS FAMILY*
Ryan looked directly into the camera.
Then he said:
“My former wife has no idea what she’s been manipulated into.””
I froze.
Because Ryan wasn’t accusing me anymore.
He was pretending to protect me.
And then he said the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“Claire Bennett is not the person responsible.””
A pause.
“She’s the person who was used.””
The camera moved closer.
Ryan’s expression turned serious.
“The real person behind this betrayal…”
May you like
He looked straight ahead.
“Is Alexander Whitmore.””
