Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in My Father’s Name
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid.
Because every time I closed my eyes, another memory changed.
The first time Ryan told me he loved me.
The night he proposed.
The day we bought our house.
The countless moments I thought were proof of a real marriage.
Now every memory carried a question.
Was it real?
Or was I just the final piece in a plan that started before I even knew there was a game?
By midnight, I was sitting in Alexander Whitmore’s private office with a cup of untouched tea in my hands.
The city lights reflected against the windows.
Chicago never truly went dark.
But my world had.
At least, the world I thought I understood.
Alexander stood near his desk, reading through the documents my father left behind.
He hadn’t pressured me.
He hadn’t asked me to trust him.
That was probably why I was starting to.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Alexander looked up.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised him.
Then I continued.
“But I’m more afraid of not knowing.””
For a moment, he looked at me like he saw my father in me.
Then he sat across from me.
“Your father and Robert Mercer met when they were both young.””
“Business partners?””
“Friends first.””
I listened carefully.
“Robert had ambition. Thomas had vision. Together, they created a company that eventually became Mercer Urban Development.””
I frowned.
“But the company was always called Mercer.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“Because Robert wanted control.””
I waited.
“At first, it seemed harmless. He wanted the company named after his family. Your father didn’t care about recognition.””
“That sounds like him.””
Alexander nodded.
“Thomas cared about building something meaningful. Robert cared about owning something powerful.””
I looked down.
“So what happened?””
“Their values became impossible to reconcile.””
Alexander opened another file.
Inside were old documents.
Copies of contracts.
Financial reports.
Emails.
“Your father discovered Robert was moving money through private accounts.””
“Stealing?””
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“And Ryan knew?””
“Not immediately.””
“Then when?””
Alexander sighed.
“When Ryan was old enough to understand how the company worked.””
I looked away.
A memory surfaced.
Ryan at dinner one night, years ago.
His father had just passed away.
Ryan had been quiet.
I remembered asking if he was okay.
He had simply said:
“My father taught me one thing. Never let anyone take what belongs to you.””
At the time, I thought it was grief talking.
Now it sounded different.
It sounded like a lesson.
“What did my father do after he found out?””
“He confronted Robert.””
“And?””
“Robert denied everything.””
I looked at the documents.
“But your father had proof.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he expose him?””
Alexander looked toward the photograph.
“Because Robert wasn’t just his business partner.””
A pause.
“He was also your husband’s father.””
I understood.
My father wasn’t weak.
He wasn’t afraid.
He was protecting Ryan.
Even after discovering the truth.
Even after learning the family he had trusted was corrupt.
He still believed Ryan could choose differently.
I swallowed.
“He gave him a chance.””
“Yes.””
“And Ryan?””
Alexander’s silence answered before his words did.
“He chose his father.””
The sentence landed harder than I expected.
Because some part of me had always hoped Ryan was just lost.
Confused.
Influenced.
But maybe he had chosen.
Maybe that was the truth I didn’t want to accept.
A knock interrupted us.
Alexander’s assistant entered.
“Mr. Whitmore, we received something.””
She handed him an envelope.
“What is it?””
“It was delivered to the foundation office.””
Alexander looked at the front.
Then his expression changed.
“It’s from Ryan Mercer.””
My stomach tightened.
“Open it.””
Alexander did.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
No letter.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
He placed it on the desk.
I leaned forward.
And froze.
It was a picture of me.
Not recent.
Not from the divorce.
From my wedding day.
I was standing beside Ryan, smiling.
Happy.
Young.
Naive.
On the back, someone had written a message.
*She still doesn’t know what her father did.*
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander turned the photograph over again.
His eyes narrowed.
“Ryan is trying to scare you.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows something.””
I stood.
“What?””
Before Alexander could answer, my phone rang.
David, my attorney.
I answered immediately.
“David?””
“Claire, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because Ryan filed a lawsuit.””
My stomach dropped.
“Against me?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
There was hesitation.
Then:
“Fraud. Misrepresentation. Attempted theft of company assets.””
I almost laughed.
The accusation was so absurd it became almost unbelievable.
“He’s accusing me of stealing from him?””
“Claire, listen. This is serious. He’s claiming you hid your father’s ownership interest in Mercer Urban Development.””
I looked at Alexander.
“He knows.””
David went quiet.
“What?””
“He knows about the trust.””
“How?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
And that was the part that scared me.
Ryan wasn’t guessing.
He was moving with information.
“David,” I said slowly, “who else knew about my father’s trust?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Only a few people.””
“Names.””
“Claire—”
“Names.””
He sighed.
“Your father’s attorney. Me. Alexander Whitmore.””
“Anyone else?””
Silence.
“David.””
His voice became quieter.
“There was one more person.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
“Ryan’s mother.””
I froze.
“His mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she was involved in the original company agreements.””
I closed my eyes.
Another Mercer.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life I never knew existed.
“David, why would Ryan’s mother know?””
“Because she helped create the legal structure.””
I felt dizzy.
The Mercer family wasn’t just connected to my father.
They were woven into everything.
My marriage.
My company.
My inheritance.
My entire life.
After the call ended, I looked at Alexander.
“Ryan’s mother knew.””
He nodded slowly.
“That’s why he knows.””
“How?””
“Because if she told him…”
Alexander stopped.
“What?””
His face became serious.
“She may have given him access to the original trust documents.””
I looked down at the lawsuit notification David had emailed me.
Ryan wasn’t acting like a man who had stolen something.
He was acting like a man trying to reclaim something.
Something he believed belonged to him.
Then my eyes caught a detail.
The lawsuit date.
The filing time.
My breath stopped.
“Alexander.””
He looked up.
“Ryan filed this before the divorce was finalized.””
The room went quiet.
“That’s impossible.””
I pointed at the document.
“The divorce agreement was signed at 3:42 p.m.””
I looked at the lawsuit.
“Ryan filed this at 3:18.””
Alexander walked closer.
His expression darkened.
“He knew.””
“He planned this before I signed.””
“Yes.””
My hands shook.
Not from fear.
From anger.
He didn’t just betray me.
He had orchestrated everything.
The affair.
The divorce.
The humiliation.
The public accusation.
It was all part of a plan.
Ryan wanted me to walk away.
He wanted me to leave without questioning anything.
He wanted me to believe I had lost.
Because if I believed that…
I wouldn’t look deeper.
I wouldn’t find the truth.
I wouldn’t discover what my father left behind.
A notification appeared on my phone.
Another news alert.
This time, it wasn’t about Ryan.
It was about me.
*UNKNOWN HEIRESS CONNECTED TO BILLIONAIRE ALEXANDER WHITMORE AFTER MERCER DIVORCE*
I stared.
“How did they know?””
Alexander took the phone from my hand.
His jaw tightened.
“Someone leaked your location.””
“Who?””
He looked at the photograph Ryan sent.
Then at the lawsuit.
Then at me.
“I don’t think Ryan wanted you to disappear.””
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?””
Alexander placed the phone down.
“I think he wanted you to come here.””
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because he needed everyone to see you standing beside me.””
I frowned.
“Why would that help him?””
Alexander looked at me.
And then he said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“Because Ryan Mercer isn’t trying to prove you stole from him.””
A pause.
“He’s trying to convince the world that you and I planned to steal from him.””
I stared at him.
The pieces began falling into place.
Ryan wasn’t just attacking my inheritance.
He was creating a story.
A story where he was the victim.
A story where I was the greedy ex-wife.
A story where Alexander was the villain.
Then Alexander’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Claire.””
I stood.
“What happened?””
He lowered the phone slowly.
“The police are outside.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Alexander looked toward the office door.
“Because someone reported that you stole confidential Mercer documents.””
The door opened.
And the first thing I saw was a detective holding a warrant.
“Claire Bennett?””
I stepped forward.
“Yes?””
The detective looked at the papers in his hand.
“You’re being accused of corporate theft.””
I looked at Alexander.
Then at the photograph of my father.
And suddenly I understood.
May you like
Ryan wasn’t waiting for me to discover the truth.
He was trying to bury me before I did.
