Chapter 8: The Girl Upstairs
“Mom?””
The voice came from somewhere beyond the splintered wall.
It was young.
A little shaky.
But unmistakably close.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Nia stared at her.
Marcus couldn't take his eyes off the broken passage.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa whispered, “She's not supposed to be here.””
Another voice came from the other side.
“Mom, why are you hiding?””
Marcus moved forward.
“Everyone stay behind me.””
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
“Marcus, don't.””
He turned.
“That's your daughter too.””
Elena looked at the wall as if she were afraid of what waited behind it.
“I know.””
A heavy blow struck the hidden door.
Wood cracked.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Daniel raised his gun.
“We need another exit.””
Marcus looked down the passage.
“Too late.””
Another blow.
The panel burst inward.
Two men entered.
Daniel fired once into the ceiling.
“Back!””
The men ducked.
Marcus pulled Elena and Nia behind him while Daniel stood in the narrow corridor.
“Move!”” Daniel shouted.
Everyone rushed toward the staircase at the far end.
Vanessa hesitated.
Marcus grabbed her arm.
“You're coming.””
“No.””
“You're the only one who knows where she is.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I can't face her.””
“You're going to.””
They reached the top of the stairs.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Marcus looked around.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa pointed toward the upstairs landing.
“The guest room.””
Marcus crossed the hallway and opened the door.
The room was empty.
The bed was neatly made.
A lamp glowed beside the window.
A school backpack sat against the wall.
Marcus turned around.
“You said she was here.””
“She was.””
“When?””
“This morning.””
Daniel entered behind them.
“Check the bathroom.””
Empty.
Marcus opened the closet.
Clothes.
Shoes.
Books.
A framed photograph.
He picked it up.
The girl in the picture stood beside Vanessa.
They were smiling.
Marcus looked at the date.
Three months earlier.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Her name is Sophie.””
Nia stared at the photograph.
“Sophie?””
Marcus nodded.
“How old?””
“Seventeen.””
Nia looked at Elena.
“If she's your daughter, she's my sister.””
Elena's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
Nia took a step toward Vanessa.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa whispered, “She heard us.””
“Then she knows everything.””
“I don't know.””
A floorboard creaked above them.
Marcus looked up.
The attic.
He moved toward the narrow staircase.
Daniel followed.
“Careful.””
Marcus climbed.
The attic door was slightly open.
He pushed it.
“Sophie?””
No answer.
The attic was dark except for a thin strip of daylight coming through the small window.
Boxes lined the walls.
Old furniture stood beneath white sheets.
Then Marcus heard breathing.
From behind a stack of boxes.
“Sophie?””
A girl stepped out.
Seventeen.
Dark hair pulled into a loose ponytail.
Green eyes.
Elena's eyes.
She wore jeans and an oversized gray sweatshirt.
She held something in one hand.
A phone.
In the other, a kitchen knife.
Marcus immediately raised both hands.
“It's okay.””
Sophie stared at him.
“Stay there.””
Marcus stopped.
“No one's going to hurt you.””
“You're Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“The man Vanessa married.””
His throat tightened.
“Yes.””
Sophie looked beyond him.
Then her eyes landed on Elena.
Everything changed.
Elena froze.
The girl lowered the knife.
“Who are you?””
Elena couldn't speak.
Marcus looked at her.
“Elena.””
Sophie shook her head.
“No.””
“I’m your mother.””
The words hung in the attic.
Sophie laughed once.
It wasn't amusement.
It was disbelief.
“My mother died.””
Elena took a step forward.
“They told you that.””
“They told me you abandoned me.””
“I didn't.””
“They said you didn't want me.””
Elena's voice broke.
“I never knew where you were.””
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Sophie…”
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
One word.
That was enough.
Sophie lowered the knife.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Your name is Sophie?””
She nodded.
“Your birthday?””
“September fourteenth.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
The same date.
The hospital transfer.
Everything clicked.
“You were born in Room 14.””
Sophie stared at him.
“How do you know?””
Elena whispered, “Because I was there.””
Sophie looked at her mother.
“You remember me?””
“I remember holding you.””
Sophie swallowed.
“Then why did you leave?””
“I didn't.””
“Then why was Vanessa the one raising me?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I was supposed to protect you.””
“From what?””
“Everyone.””
Sophie looked at Marcus.
“Especially him.””
Marcus stiffened.
“Me?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“They told me you would come looking.””
“I did look.””
Sophie laughed bitterly.
“Did you?””
Marcus nodded.
“For years.””
“Then why didn't you find me?””
“I didn't know you existed.””
Sophie stared at him.
“That isn't what they told me.””
“What did they tell you?””
“That you knew.””
Marcus felt something inside him break.
“I didn't.””
Sophie looked at Elena.
“Did you tell him?””
Elena shook her head.
“I didn't know I was pregnant when I left home that night.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Then how did they know?””
Daniel answered from the doorway.
“Because someone at the hospital was working for them.””
Sophie looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“A nurse.””
Marcus remembered the hospital record.
The altered files.
The room number.
The missing birth certificate.
“What happened after you were born?””
Elena looked at Sophie.
“I woke up three days later.””
“You were unconscious?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“They told me you were dead.””
Sophie’s face tightened.
“Who?””
Elena looked toward Vanessa.
“She was the one who came to my room.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“You told her the baby died?””
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because they told me to.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I was terrified.””
“You separated a mother from her newborn daughter.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I know.””
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you keep me?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Because they gave me a choice.””
“What choice?””
“Raise you quietly, or they would take you.””
Sophie stared at her.
“And you chose to lie to me.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
The attic fell silent.
Then Sophie slowly turned to Elena.
“Do you still love me?””
Elena's eyes filled.
“Every day.””
Sophie stepped forward.
Elena opened her arms.
For a second, Sophie didn't move.
Then she crossed the distance.
Elena caught her.
The sound that escaped her was part sob, part laugh.
“My baby.””
Sophie buried her face into her mother's shoulder.
“I thought nobody wanted me.””
Elena held her tighter.
“I wanted you before I ever saw your face.””
Marcus stood nearby.
Nia wiped her tears.
Then she moved toward them.
Sophie looked over Elena's shoulder.
Nia smiled through wet eyes.
“I'm Nia.””
“I know.””
“You know me?””
Sophie nodded.
“I've seen your pictures.””
Marcus frowned.
“Where?””
Sophie pulled back.
“Vanessa showed me.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She wanted me to know who you were.””
Nia stepped closer.
“So you knew about me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Sophie shook her head.
“I was scared.””
Nia looked at her.
“Me too.””
They stared at each other for a moment.
Then Nia held out her hand.
Sophie took it.
Marcus watched both girls.
For the first time that night, the house felt less like a crime scene and more like a family finding its way back together.
Then Daniel said,
“We're not safe.””
The moment shattered.
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel pointed toward the attic window.
“Because someone's standing outside.””
Everyone turned.
A figure stood across the street beneath an umbrella.
Watching the house.
Sophie went pale.
“I know him.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
“He came to the school.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
“What did he say?””
“He asked if Vanessa was home.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“That's impossible.””
Marcus moved toward the window.
The figure lifted one hand.
Then pointed directly at Sophie.
Marcus stepped back.
“Get away from the window.””
The man turned and walked toward a waiting black SUV.
Daniel checked his phone.
A message appeared.
His face changed.
“What?””
Daniel showed Marcus the screen.
*YOU FOUND THE SECOND CHILD.*
A second message arrived.
*NOW FIND THE FIRST TRUTH.*
Marcus looked at Elena.
“What is the first truth?””
Elena stared at the black box in his hand.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa reached into the pocket of her coat and pulled out a small folded paper.
“I've had this for twenty years.””
Marcus took it.
“What is it?””
“A copy of the original hospital record.””
He unfolded it.
At the top:
*ST. CATHERINE'S HOSPITAL*
Below it were the names.
*Patient: Elena Hale*
*Infant One: Nia Hale*
*Infant Two: Sophie Hale*
Marcus's eyes moved lower.
Then stopped.
There was a third line.
*Biological Father: Unknown — requested emergency paternity confirmation.*
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Marcus read it twice.
“What?””
Elena looked over his shoulder.
Her face went white.
“What does it say?””
Marcus turned the paper toward her.
The note read:
*PATERNITY SAMPLE MATCHED.*
Underneath was a single initial.
*M.*
Elena stepped backward.
“That can't be.””
Marcus stared at the letter.
“Who is M?””
Vanessa began to shake.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered,
“Your father.””
Silence.
Marcus felt the floor tilt beneath him.
“My father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“The test said he was the biological father of one of the girls.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
Then Sophie.
Then Elena.
His voice barely came out.
“Which one?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the entire house went dark.
And downstairs, a man's voice called out:
“Marcus?””
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You should have asked me before you opened that box.””
Marcus knew the voice.
He had heard it at funerals.
At board meetings.
In old recordings.
May you like
His father's voice.
But his father had been dead for fifteen years.
