Chapter 7: The Child They Hid

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The baby in it was unmistakably Nia.

Same small mouth.

Same tiny crease beside her left eye.

Same white blanket Elena had wrapped her in the day they brought her home from the hospital.

But the words on the back made no sense.

*NIA HALE — NOT ELENA'S ONLY CHILD.*

His fingers tightened around the photograph until the edges bent.

“No.””

Elena stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus turned the photograph around.

She read it.

Her face went completely still.

Nia stood in the doorway.

“What’s wrong?””

Marcus immediately lowered the picture.

“Nothing.””

Elena looked at him.

“Marcus.””

He couldn't answer.

Daniel took the photograph from his hand.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus pointed toward the open box.

“It was inside.””

Daniel looked at the back.

“That's not Elena's handwriting.””

“Whose is it?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa entered the room.

She saw the photograph.

Then she stopped.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

“You recognize it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You just said no.””

“I said I don't know.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Were there two babies?””

Vanessa backed up.

“Marcus…”

“Were there?””

Elena's voice came from behind him.

“Answer him.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Marcus held up the photograph.

“This is our daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Then what does this mean?””

“I don't know.””

Nia stepped fully into the room.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at her.

She pointed at the photograph.

“That’s me.””

“Yes.””

“Who is the other child?””

Marcus felt his throat close.

“There isn't another child in the picture.””

Nia frowned.

“Then why does it say I’m not Mom’s only child?””

Nobody answered.

Nia looked at Elena.

“Mom?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

Nia looked hurt.

“You don't know?””

“I swear.””

Marcus stared at the picture again.

The date on the back was the date Nia had been born.

The handwriting wasn't Elena's.

It wasn't his father's either.

But the box had been sealed beneath the floor of their bedroom.

Someone had wanted him to find it.

Someone had expected this exact moment.

Daniel suddenly looked toward the hallway.

“We need to leave.””

Marcus turned.

“Why?””

“Because the people outside weren't looking for the drive.””

Daniel pointed toward the box.

“They were looking for this.””

Marcus looked down.

“The box?””

Daniel nodded.

“Whatever is inside it.””

Vanessa whispered, “It's too late.””

Ava appeared behind her.

“What is too late?””

Vanessa turned.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Ava's face tightened.

“Neither should you.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Ava, take Nia downstairs.””

“No.””

“Ava.””

“I heard everything.””

She stepped into the room.

“I’m not leaving her alone.””

Caleb appeared beside her.

“Neither am I.””

Marcus looked at his children.

For one brief second, the fear in the room softened.

Then a noise came from below.

A door opening.

Everyone went silent.

Daniel whispered, “They're inside.””

Marcus closed the box.

“Back door?””

“Blocked.””

“Windows?””

“Second floor.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“What are our options?””

She pointed toward the wall.

“There.””

Marcus frowned.

A narrow wooden panel stood beside the closet.

He had never noticed it.

Elena moved to it and pressed her palm against the surface.

Nothing happened.

She pressed again.

A section clicked.

The panel shifted inward.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Marcus stared.

“You knew this was here?””

“No.””

“I've lived in this room for seven years.””

“So did I, once.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“You're not supposed to open that.””

Marcus turned.

“Why?””

“Because that's how they used to move people.””

Elena's face went pale.

“Move people where?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel pushed open the hidden door.

“Find out.””

They entered the passage.

It was barely wide enough for one person at a time.

Marcus went first.

Then Nia.

Elena stayed close behind her.

Ava and Caleb followed.

Vanessa came last.

Daniel pulled the panel shut.

For several seconds, they heard footsteps in the bedroom.

A man's voice said,

“Check the floor.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

Another voice answered,

“Nothing.””

A third voice said,

“They had time to move it.””

Daniel whispered, “Keep going.””

The passage sloped downward.

Marcus noticed old electrical wires running along the ceiling.

The walls were covered with faded marks.

Dates.

Initials.

Numbers.

Then Nia stopped.

“Dad.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

She pointed to the wall.

There was a small carving.

Two letters.

*N.H.*

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Nia Hale.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus touched the carving.

“It was here before she was born?””

“Yes.””

Nia stared at it.

“Who put it there?””

Vanessa whispered from behind them.

“Your father.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“My father knew about this passage?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“He built it.””

Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Why?””

“To hide things.””

“What things?””

“People.””

Elena stopped walking.

“People?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Witnesses.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“How many?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“You've known about this for years.””

“I knew there was a passage.””

“You said you never knew how far it went.””

“I didn't.””

“Who did?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Your father.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father died fifteen years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you married me seven years ago.””

Vanessa nodded.

“So how did you know any of this?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because before I met you, I worked for him.””

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“You what?””

“I was his assistant.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn't.””

“My father never mentioned you.””

“He wasn't supposed to.””

“Why?””

“Because I was helping him hide the ledger.””

Elena whispered, “The original ledger.””

Vanessa nodded.

“The one everyone thought was destroyed.””

Marcus suddenly understood.

The paperwork.

The photographs.

The safe.

The house.

His father's signature.

Everything led back to one place.

His father had known.

Maybe long before Elena discovered anything.

Maybe before Marcus had ever met Elena.

“What was in the ledger?”” he asked.

Vanessa's voice shook.

“Payments.””

“How many?””

“Hundreds.””

“To whom?””

“Politicians. Officials. Police officers. Businessmen.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“And your name?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Elena said, “His isn't the name they were protecting.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Whose is?””

Elena's eyes went to Nia.

Marcus followed her gaze.

“What does Nia have to do with it?””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“Everything.””

Nia stared at her mother.

“Why?””

Elena reached for her hand.

“When you were born, your blood type didn't match mine.””

Marcus frowned.

“So?””

“It didn't match yours either.””

He went completely still.

“What?””

Elena nodded.

“The hospital said it was a clerical error.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“I remember the doctor saying something.””

“So do I.””

Elena squeezed Nia's hand.

“But later, I discovered they had altered the records.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“What were her real records?””

Elena shook her head.

“I never found the complete file.””

Daniel looked at them.

“I did.””

Marcus turned.

“You found it?””

Daniel nodded.

“Months ago.””

“You knew?””

“I didn't know it was yours.””

“What did it say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The original birth certificate listed Elena Hale as the mother.””

Marcus's chest tightened.

“And the father?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“The father’s name was blacked out.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Why would you know that?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Because I saw the original.””

“Who was the father?””

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I don't know!””

She covered her mouth.

“I only saw the first letter.””

“What letter?””

Vanessa whispered,

“M.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“There are millions of names starting with M.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not in this family.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“The name started with Marcus.””

His whole body went numb.

“No.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen.””

“My name?””

“That's not what she means.””

Vanessa was shaking.

“The father wasn't you.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“What is she saying?””

Elena didn't answer.

“Answer me.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I never knew who the biological father was.””

Marcus stared at her.

“But you knew.””

“I suspected.””

“Suspected who?””

“I didn't know.””

“Then why did you stay?””

Elena looked devastated.

“Because I loved you.””

Nia's voice was barely audible.

“Dad…”

Marcus turned toward her.

She was crying.

“I don't care who my biological father is.””

Marcus walked over and held her.

“You're my daughter.””

She clung to him.

“Even if it's true?””

“Nothing changes that.””

Elena watched them.

Then Daniel stepped backward.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel was staring at the wall.

“There’s another marking.””

He wiped dust away.

A series of numbers appeared.

*09-14-06*

Marcus recognized the date.

The hospital transfer.

Below it was a second line.

*ROOM 14.*

Daniel looked at Elena.

“You were there.””

Elena nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“In Room 14?””

“Yes.””

“What happened there?””

Elena's face had gone white.

“I gave birth.””

Nia looked stunned.

“But I was born before the crash.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn't talking about Nia.””

Silence.

Marcus stared at her.

Daniel whispered,

“Then who?””

Elena looked at Nia.

Then at Marcus.

Then she said the words that made every secret in the house feel small.

“I had another child.””

Nia released Marcus.

“When?””

Elena swallowed.

“Three days after the crash.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You were pregnant?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody knew?””

“I didn't know until the hospital told me.””

“Where is the child?””

Elena's lips trembled.

“I was told the baby died.””

Marcus looked toward the hidden passage.

“And you believed them?””

“For eleven years.””

“Until what?””

Elena reached into her coat and pulled out a folded photograph.

She opened it.

A teenage girl stared back at them.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

And the same small scar beneath the left ear that Elena carried.

Nia stared at the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Elena looked at her.

“I don't know.””

Marcus took the picture.

On the back were four words:

*SHE LIVES WITH VANESSA.*

Marcus slowly raised his eyes.

Vanessa had stopped breathing.

Ava whispered,

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa backed away.

“No.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“You have a child.””

“No.””

“You know this girl.””

“No.””

“Where is she?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“You don't understand.””

Marcus's voice became a whisper.

“Then help me understand.””

A sudden crash exploded from the end of the passage.

Someone had found the hidden door.

Daniel pulled his weapon.

“They're coming.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the girl?””

Vanessa's face broke.

“She’s upstairs.””

Marcus froze.

“Where?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“In your house.””

Another crash.

The hidden panel began to splinter.

Vanessa whispered,

“She has been living there the entire time.””

Then the passage lights came on.

And from the darkness behind them, a teenage girl's voice said:

“Mom?””
