Chapter 3: The Man Who Should Have Died

Vanessa screamed.

It was not the scream of someone startled by a stranger at the door.

It was the scream of someone who had just seen a ghost.

Daniel stepped back from the porch.

Marcus stared at him.

“Elena survived?””

Daniel's eyes remained on Vanessa.

“She survived the crash.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I was there.””

“No,” Vanessa said again.

“You were not.””

“I was.””

Marcus opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

Daniel hesitated.

Vanessa moved toward him.

“You need to leave.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because he's lying.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“That's what you told him twenty years ago.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Nobody moves.””

Nia stood behind him, trembling.

“Dad…”

Marcus looked over his shoulder.

“Go with Ava and Caleb.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

“Nia.””

“I want to hear.””

Marcus saw the fear in her eyes.

She was afraid.

But she was done being kept in the dark.

He understood that feeling.

“Fine,” he said quietly.

“Stay behind me.””

Daniel entered the house.

He removed his coat and placed it over one arm.

Marcus noticed his left hand.

Two fingers were bent slightly.

Scarred.

“You've been alive all this time.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Three times.””

“When?””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“The first time was six months after Elena's accident.””

Marcus slowly turned.

Vanessa's face had gone blank.

Daniel continued.

“The second was two years later. The third was last year.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“You knew he was alive.””

She said nothing.

Daniel looked at Nia.

“You're Elena's daughter.””

Nia nodded.

“You look just like her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happened to my wife?””

Daniel took a breath.

“She wasn't supposed to die.””

Nia's fingers tightened around the teddy bear.

Marcus heard her whisper, “Then why did everyone tell me she did?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“That's the question.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the folder from the coffee table.

Marcus caught her wrist.

“Don't.””

“Give me that.””

“No.””

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“I know enough.””

Marcus took the papers from her and handed them to Caleb.

“Keep these.””

Caleb nodded.

Vanessa stared at her husband.

“You trust them over me?””

Marcus's answer came immediately.

“I trust the evidence.””

Daniel motioned toward the study.

“We need to talk somewhere private.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Everyone stays.””

Daniel nodded.

They moved into the dining room.

Outside, rain began tapping against the windows.

Marcus placed the black flash drive on the table.

“What did Elena leave on this?””

Daniel sat down.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Then why did you come here?””

“Because someone called me.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“When?””

“Forty minutes ago.””

Marcus frowned.

“What did they say?””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“They said the key had been found.””

Nia lowered her eyes.

“And they told you to come here?””

“Yes.””

“To do what?””

“To keep you alive.””

Marcus's chair scraped backward.

“What?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Marcus, Elena spent the last weeks before the crash building a case against someone. She believed someone was taking money from accounts she had access to through the company.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered, “Stop.””

Daniel didn't.

“She discovered transfers.””

Marcus glanced toward the folder.

“How much?””

“Enough to put someone in prison.””

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“This is insane.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Were you involved?””

“No.””

“Then why are you panicking?””

“Because you don't understand what happened!””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“Because he will kill her.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I won't say.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“He already tried once.””

Marcus's stomach dropped.

“You're talking about the crash.””

Daniel nodded.

“That night, Elena was supposed to meet me at a warehouse.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“She had copies of the documents. She wanted to hand them to me.””

“And?””

“She never arrived.””

“What happened?””

Daniel's eyes lowered.

“I went looking for her.””

Rain struck the glass harder.

“I found the car.””

Marcus's breathing slowed.

“Where?””

“On the old county road.””

“The same road where she died.””

“Yes.””

“Was she inside?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What?””

“The car was there. Elena wasn't.””

Nia's mouth fell open.

“What happened to Mom?””

Daniel looked at her.

“She was alive.””

Marcus pressed both hands onto the table.

“Where was she?””

“She had been pulled from the wreck.””

“By who?””

“A man.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That's where things get complicated.””

Marcus's voice rose.

“I've spent twenty years believing my wife died in that car.””

“She didn't.””

“Then who did?””

Daniel's silence answered him.

Marcus stepped away from the table.

“No.””

Daniel continued quietly.

“There was a second vehicle.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Stop.””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

He paced toward the window.

“No body?””

“There was a body.””

“But not Elena.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“You knew.””

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“I knew she survived the crash.””

“When did you know?””

“The same night.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why did you let me bury an empty coffin?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“You let me mourn her for twenty years.””

“I had no choice.””

“You always have a choice!””

Nia flinched.

Marcus immediately lowered his voice.

“What did you do with her?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn't take her.””

“Who did?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel stood.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded document.

“I found this in Elena's storage locker.””

Marcus took it.

The paper was old.

Official.

A hospital transfer form.

The patient's name had been blacked out.

But the admission date was visible.

*September 14, 2006.*

Marcus looked up.

“That was three days after the crash.””

Daniel nodded.

“She was admitted under another name.””

“Where?””

“St. Catherine's.””

Marcus stared at the page.

“That hospital closed years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Records?””

“Most were destroyed.””

“Most?””

Daniel pointed to the last line.

“One physician kept copies.””

Marcus read the note.

*Patient conscious. Severe injuries. Repeatedly asks for husband and daughter.*

His hand began to tremble.

“Nia was a toddler.””

“She knew you were looking for her.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

A tear escaped.

“She was alive.””

“Yes.””

Nia stepped forward.

“Did she survive?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Where is she now?””

Daniel hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

“Answer her.””

“I don't know.””

Nia's face crumpled.

“You said she survived.””

“She did.””

“Then where is she?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The last confirmed record I found was from eleven years ago.””

“Eleven?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She was living under a different name.””

Marcus felt dizzy.

“What name?””

Daniel said it softly.

“Elena Brooks.””

Vanessa suddenly backed into the wall.

Marcus stared at her.

“You know that name.””

She didn't answer.

“You know it.””

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

“I heard it once.””

“Where?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Marcus followed her gaze.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered, “In this house.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“The night before the crash.””

Daniel's face changed.

“You never told anyone that.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa pressed herself against the wall.

“Elena came here.””

Marcus froze.

“She came to this house?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She wanted something back.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“The teddy bear.””

Nia stared down at the bear in her hands.

Marcus slowly looked at it too.

“The teddy bear?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Elena told me there was something hidden inside it.””

Nia immediately held it tighter.

“What?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

Marcus took the bear gently from Nia.

He turned it over.

The stitching along the back looked newer than the rest.

Very slightly.

Marcus remembered the tiny brass key.

The flash drive.

The warning letter.

He reached for the seam.

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Marcus, don't!””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“Because Elena didn't hide something in that bear.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Then what did she hide?””

Vanessa whispered the words that made Marcus's blood run cold.

“She hid a name.””

Marcus stared at the stitches.

“A name?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The name of the person who paid for her disappearance.””

No one moved.

Then the doorbell rang.

Again.

This time there was no hesitation on the other side.

Someone pounded on the front door.

Three hard blows.

Nia jumped.

Marcus turned toward the hallway.

Daniel's face lost all color.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel whispered, “I know that knock.””

The pounding came again.

Then a woman's voice called from outside.

“Marcus, open the door.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

He knew that voice.

Even after twenty years.

Nia looked up at him.

“Dad?””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

The woman outside knocked once more.

And then she said:

May you like

“It's me.””

“It's Elena.””
