Chapter 4: The Woman at the Door
Marcus could not move.
The voice outside seemed to split the room in two—the house he had known for years, and the life that had existed before it.
Nia looked up at him.
“Dad?””
He still stared at the front door.
Daniel whispered, “Don’t open it.””
Marcus turned slowly.
“You just told me she survived.””
“I told you the records said she survived.””
“That’s her voice.””
“You haven’t heard her in twenty years.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“I would know my wife.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You need to think.””
Another knock.
Three slow taps.
Then the woman outside spoke again.
“Marcus, please.””
Her voice was softer this time.
“I know you're in there.””
Nia started crying.
“That’s Mom.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa backed away from the door.
“That isn’t Elena.””
Marcus stared at her.
“How would you know?””
Vanessa's lips parted, but no answer came.
Marcus walked toward the entrance.
Daniel caught his arm.
“Wait.””
Marcus pulled free.
“My daughter has spent half her life believing her mother died. If there's even a chance that woman is Elena, I'm opening that door.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“And if she isn't?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then she can prove it.””
He reached for the lock.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his shoulder.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
He turned.
“Get your hand off me.””
“You don't understand what you're inviting inside.””
“Then explain.””
“I can't.””
“You keep saying that.””
Marcus removed her hand.
“This ends tonight.””
He unlocked the deadbolt.
The door opened.
Cold rain blew across the threshold.
A woman stood beneath the porch light.
She wore a dark gray coat soaked at the shoulders. Her hair was shorter than Marcus remembered, cut just below her jaw. There was a thin scar running from beneath her left ear toward her neck.
She looked older.
Of course she did.
Twenty years had passed.
But her eyes—
Marcus forgot how to breathe.
They were the same.
Green with tiny brown flecks near the pupils.
Elena's eyes.
The woman stared at him.
For a second, neither spoke.
Then she whispered,
“Marcus.””
His hand slipped from the door.
“Elena?””
Nia gasped behind him.
The woman looked past his shoulder.
Her eyes found the girl.
Nia stopped crying.
She stared.
The woman covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Nia whispered, “Mom?””
The woman took one step forward.
Then another.
Marcus moved aside.
Nia ran.
The woman dropped to her knees just as Nia reached her.
They collided in the doorway.
Nia wrapped both arms around her neck.
The woman sobbed.
“My baby.””
Marcus stood frozen as Nia cried into her coat.
“I waited for you,” Nia said.
“I waited for you so long.””
“I know.””
“You were supposed to come back.””
“I tried.””
“You promised.””
“I know.””
Elena pressed her face into Nia's hair.
“I am so sorry.””
Marcus finally found his voice.
“Come inside.””
Elena looked at him.
There was fear behind her eyes.
“Are you sure?””
Marcus swallowed.
“This is your home.””
Elena's expression broke.
“No,” she whispered.
“It stopped being my home a long time ago.””
She stood.
Marcus stepped toward her.
She stopped him with one hand.
“Not yet.””
He stared at her.
“You're real.””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus's voice cracked.
“I buried you.””
“I know.””
“There was a funeral.””
“I know.””
“They told me you died.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you come home?””
Elena looked at Vanessa.
Her expression changed.
“Because I was told you would die if I did.””
Vanessa whispered, “Elena…”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“You should have left him alone.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was protecting him.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Enough.””
Elena stepped into the living room.
She looked around.
Her gaze stopped on the photographs lining the wall.
Wedding pictures.
Family vacations.
A portrait of Marcus with Ava and Caleb.
Then a photograph of Marcus and Vanessa on their wedding day.
Elena stared at it.
“That was fast.””
Marcus flinched.
“I thought you were dead.””
Elena looked at him.
“And you mourned me?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“For years.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I watched.””
Marcus stiffened.
“You watched us?””
“Sometimes.””
“From where?””
“From a distance.””
Nia reached for her hand.
Elena squeezed it.
Marcus noticed how thin she was.
How carefully she moved.
Like every movement had once hurt.
He wanted to ask a thousand questions.
Instead, he asked the one that mattered.
“Who did this?””
Elena looked at Daniel.
Then at Vanessa.
“Both of them know parts of the truth.””
Marcus's expression darkened.
“Daniel?””
Daniel nodded.
“I told you I found her car.””
Elena looked at him.
“You found more than that.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I did what I could.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was hunted.””
“So was I.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Stop.””
They fell silent.
He looked at Elena.
“Start from the beginning.””
Elena took a breath.
“Twenty years ago, I discovered someone had been moving money through a company account.””
Marcus nodded.
“Daniel told me.””
“I found more than money.””
“What?””
“Names.””
“Whose names?””
“People who had been paid to make problems disappear.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Problems?””
“Witnesses. Employees. Lawyers. Anyone who got too close.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You're leaving something out.””
Elena looked at her.
“You're right.””
Marcus turned.
“Which is?””
Elena's voice became quiet.
“One of the names belonged to Vanessa.””
The room went still.
Marcus looked at his wife.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Elena continued.
“Vanessa wasn't the person ordering the payments.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Then what was she?””
Elena looked at her.
“A courier.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I was twenty-six.””
“You knew what you were carrying.””
“I didn't know what it meant.””
“You knew enough.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“You helped them?””
“I didn't know who ‘they’ were!””
“You took envelopes.””
“I thought they were business documents.””
“You took them to the warehouse.””
Vanessa's eyes closed.
Daniel said softly, “She knew about the meetings.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“And you?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus took a step closer.
“Did you work with my wife?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I loved her.””
Marcus stopped.
Elena looked at Daniel.
There was a strange sadness in her eyes.
“That was never the problem.””
Nia looked between them.
“Mom?””
Elena immediately softened.
“Yes?””
“Who wanted you dead?””
Elena looked at Marcus.
“You need to understand something first.””
“What?””
“The crash wasn't an accident.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don't.””
Marcus waited.
“They weren't trying to kill me.””
He stared at her.
“They were trying to make it look like I died.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Why?””
“Because if I was officially dead, nobody would keep looking for me.””
Marcus's voice became a whisper.
“Who was ‘they’?””
Elena opened her mouth.
Then Vanessa said, “Not here.””
Elena turned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked frightened.
“Not in this house.””
Elena's face went pale.
“Why?””
Vanessa pointed toward the ceiling.
“Because the house is wired.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Vanessa continued rapidly.
“I found microphones.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was told they'd kill us.””
Marcus walked toward her.
“Who told you?””
Vanessa looked at Elena.
Elena's face changed.
“Marcus, where is the drive?””
He glanced toward the dining table.
“It’s upstairs.””
“No.””
Elena grabbed his arm.
“Where exactly?””
“The room at the end of the hall.””
She pulled him toward the stairs.
“Don't touch it.””
They hurried upstairs.
Daniel followed.
Nia remained with Ava and Caleb downstairs.
Marcus opened the hidden room.
The laptop sat on the desk.
The flash drive was exactly where he had left it.
Elena stared at it.
“Don't plug that in.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because they may have planted it.””
Daniel moved toward the desk.
“She's right.””
Marcus looked at both of them.
“Then why did I find it hidden behind the cabinet?””
Elena shook her head.
“Because you were supposed to.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“It was a trap.””
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“I told you.””
Elena turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew they'd come back when the key was found.””
Marcus looked at the three of them.
“Who?””
Before anyone could answer, a sharp electronic tone sounded.
The laptop screen turned on by itself.
Marcus froze.
The black screen filled with white letters.
*WELCOME BACK, ELENA.*
Then another line appeared.
*YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS TO RETURN WHAT YOU STOLE.*
Daniel stepped backward.
“Oh no.””
Marcus stared at the countdown.
*59*
*58*
Elena whispered,
“They found me.””
The screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
It showed the front yard.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
A second vehicle stopped behind it.
Then a third.
Marcus looked down at the driveway.
“No.””
Elena grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“What?””
“Take Nia and leave through the back.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What about you?””
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
“They didn't come here for the drive.””
The countdown continued.
*41*

She whispered,
“They came because they know our daughter has the key.””
