Chapter 6: The Signature Beneath the Floor

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Say that again.””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“Your father signed the order.””

Ava looked from one adult to another.

“Grandpa?””

Marcus didn't answer.

His father's name had not been spoken in that house for years.

Not because Marcus had forgotten him.

Because he had spent years trying to understand why the man he once admired had become a stranger before his death.

Daniel moved closer.

“The caller was telling the truth.””

Marcus looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw the order.””

“Where?””

“In a file Elena gave me.””

Elena stepped forward.

“I didn't know about the safe until years later.””

Marcus's head snapped toward her.

“You knew about it?””

“I knew there was something hidden in the house.””

“You never told me.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa was watching you.””

Vanessa flinched.

“That isn't fair.””

Elena looked at her.

“You were reporting everything.””

“I was scared.””

“You still did it.””

Marcus raised his hand.

“Enough.””

He looked around the dark basement.

“We need light.””

Daniel pulled out his phone and switched on the flashlight.

The beam swept across old stone walls, broken chairs, and dusty shelves.

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“Where is the entrance to the safe?””

She swallowed.

“Back at the house.””

“Under our bedroom?””

“Yes.””

“How do we get to it?””

“You move the bed.””

“And then?””

“There's a section of flooring that isn't original.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How long has it been there?””

“Since after our wedding.””

His stomach tightened.

“Who installed it?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“People I was told not to name.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“They never needed her loyalty. They only needed her fear.””

Marcus stepped closer to Vanessa.

“What did my father have to do with them?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Vanessa pressed both hands against her face.

“I knew your father had business connections with people outside the company.””

“Criminals?””

She nodded.

“I never understood how far it went.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father built that company from nothing.””

Elena's voice was quiet.

“That is what everyone believed.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

She hesitated.

“Your father didn't build it alone.””

Daniel said, “There were investors.””

Marcus frowned.

“Ordinary investors.””

“No,” Elena said.

“Not all of them.””

The phone in Marcus's hand buzzed.

He looked down.

The private number had disconnected.

Before he could put the phone away, a message appeared.

*YOU HAVE 17 MINUTES.*

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Seventeen minutes until what?””

Another message arrived.

*THE SAFE WILL OPEN ONCE.*

Then:

*AFTER THAT, EVERYTHING YOU LOVE BECOMES EVIDENCE.*

Ava whispered, “What does that mean?””

Marcus turned the screen off.

“It means we go back.””

Elena grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“My daughter is in danger.””

“So are you.””

“That’s nothing new.””

“It is tonight.””

Marcus held her gaze.

“I spent twenty years living without you. I'm not going to spend another night hiding.””

Elena's expression softened.

Then she nodded.

“Fine.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“You can't go back there.””

Marcus turned.

“Why?””

“Because they'll be waiting.””

“They already are.””

Daniel checked his watch.

“She's right.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Can we get there without being seen?””

Daniel nodded.

“There’s an old service road behind the cemetery.””

“Then let's use it.””

They moved through the church.

The main sanctuary was empty.

Rain tapped against stained-glass windows.

As they crossed the nave, Nia walked beside Elena.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Why did you leave me?””

Elena stopped.

Marcus slowed.

Nia looked up at her.

“You don't have to protect me from the truth.””

Elena's eyes filled.

“I didn't leave because I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

“Because somebody told me they would kill you.””

“Who?””

Elena glanced at Marcus.

“Someone I believed.””

“Who?””

Elena answered quietly.

“Vanessa.””

Nia stared at her.

Vanessa shut her eyes.

“I was told to tell Elena that Marcus had been followed.””

Elena continued.

“They showed me photographs of you at school.””

Nia's face went pale.

“They knew where you went.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried to contact you, someone made sure I knew they were watching.””

“You could have sent a letter.””

“I did.””

Marcus stopped.

“What?””

“I sent six.””

“You never said that.””

“I said they intercepted them.””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw copies.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Where?””

“In a storage locker.””

“Why didn't you bring them?””

“Because they were already gone.””

Nia suddenly spoke.

“One of them came.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Nia touched the teddy bear.

“A letter.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“Last Christmas.””

His heart stopped.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa told me it was from a scammer.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

“I thought—”

Marcus's voice cut through the church.

“You thought wrong.””

Nia reached inside her coat.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I kept it.””

Marcus took it.

The handwriting was Elena's.

One sentence.

*When you are ready to know the truth, look beneath the room where your father taught you never to trust anyone.*

Marcus stared at it.

“My father’s office.””

Elena nodded.

“Exactly.””

“Why would the safe be in my house if the clue points to his office?””

“Because he moved something.””

“What?””

Elena looked at Vanessa.

“The original ledger.””

Vanessa whispered, “No.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“The ledger still exists?””

Elena nodded.

“If it exists, it contains every payment, every name, and every instruction.””

Marcus folded the note.

“And my father hid it.””

“Yes.””

“From them?””

“From everyone.””

They reached the rear service road.

Marcus drove.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat.

Elena stayed in the back with Nia.

Vanessa sat beside Ava and Caleb.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Rain hammered the windshield.

Then Vanessa said quietly,

“Marcus.””

He kept his eyes on the road.

“What?””

“I need to tell you something before we get there.””

“Go ahead.””

“I was the one who helped Elena escape.””

Marcus glanced in the mirror.

Elena stared down.

“I thought you said Vanessa betrayed you.””

“She did.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And then I changed my mind.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“The night after the crash.””

Elena lifted her eyes.

“She found me.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa again.

“You found her?””

“I followed the ambulance.””

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her disappear.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because I realized what I'd done.””

Marcus's hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“What did you do?””

“I gave them information.””

“What information?””

“Your travel schedule.””

The car went silent.

Marcus felt cold.

“That meeting I had that night.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I told them you wouldn't be home.””

Elena's eyes closed.

“They thought Marcus would be an easy target.””

Marcus stared at the road.

“And Elena got caught instead.””

“Yes.””

The truth settled heavily inside the car.

Nia reached for her mother's hand.

Elena squeezed it.

Vanessa whispered,

“I was trying to undo it.””

Marcus said nothing.

A few minutes later, the house appeared through the rain.

Lights were glowing on the second floor.

Marcus slowed.

Daniel looked up.

“That wasn't on when we left.””

Marcus stopped the car before reaching the driveway.

“Someone's inside.””

Elena looked through the windshield.

“There shouldn't be.””

Marcus turned off the engine.

“Everyone stays here.””

“No,” Elena said.

“You don't know what's waiting.””

“Neither do you.””

Daniel opened his door.

“I’m coming.””

Marcus nodded.

They approached the house through the backyard.

The kitchen window was open.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Marcus quietly unlocked the back door.

They entered.

The house smelled like rain and damp wood.

Ava, Caleb, and Nia remained outside with Vanessa until Marcus returned.

Daniel pointed upward.

“Second floor.””

They climbed.

No footsteps.

No voices.

The bedroom door stood open.

Marcus entered.

Everything was exactly where they had left it.

The bed.

The dresser.

The paintings.

Then he noticed the rug.

It had been moved.

He crouched.

A metal edge showed underneath.

“Here.””

Daniel pulled the rug back.

A narrow panel was set into the floor.

Marcus looked at Elena.

She nodded.

He lifted it.

Underneath was a steel door.

A keypad appeared beside the lock.

Marcus stared.

“I don't have a code.””

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“I do.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What is it?””

She stepped closer.

“Your father’s birthday.””

Marcus entered the date.

The keypad flashed red.

Wrong.

Vanessa shook her head.

“His wedding anniversary.””

Marcus entered it.

Red again.

Elena whispered, “The date he died.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know it?””

“Yes.””

He entered the date.

Green.

A mechanical sound echoed beneath the floor.

The steel door opened.

Inside was a narrow chamber.

One shelf.

One black box.

And a single chair.

Marcus stared at the box.

“That's it?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

He pointed to the wall.

There were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Marcus moved closer.

Pictures of him.

At work.

At home.

With Nia.

With Vanessa.

With Elena.

Some were recent.

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“How long have they been watching us?””

Vanessa whispered, “Years.””

Nia's voice suddenly came from the hallway.

“Dad?””

Marcus turned.

Nia stood in the doorway.

She was holding the teddy bear.

“I found another note.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“What does it say?””

Nia handed it over.

He unfolded it.

His father’s handwriting.

Only six words:

*THE SAFE ISN'T THE SECRET.*

Marcus looked back into the chamber.

The black box sat untouched on the shelf.

Daniel stepped beside him.

“Open it.””

Marcus reached toward the box.

Then Elena grabbed his wrist.

“Wait.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

She stared at the box.

“Because I recognize that lock.””

Marcus stopped.

“What is it?””

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“It’s the same lock they used on the room where they kept me.””

Before anyone could move, the box clicked open by itself.

Inside lay a wedding ring.

Elena's wedding ring.

And beneath it, a photograph of a newborn baby.

Marcus picked it up.

His face went pale.

The baby was Nia.

But written on the back was a date.

May you like

And a name Marcus had never heard before.

*NIA HALE — NOT ELENA'S ONLY CHILD.*
