Chapter 6 - THE BETRAYAL RETURNS

Three days passed in silence.
Lily began to relax. She stopped flinching at every sound. She stopped asking if the men were still outside. We baked cookies. We watched movies. We built pillow forts. For a few hours each day, she almost smiled. Almost.
But I never let my guard down.
I stayed in the apartment. I kept the curtains drawn. I answered the door for no one except Sarah and the guards she’d posted outside. I checked the locks three times every night before bed. And every time my phone buzzed, my heart skipped a beat.
Sarah had been quiet. Too quiet.
Late on the third evening, my phone finally rang. Her name lit up the screen.
“Emily,” she said immediately. “Something happened.”
My stomach dropped. “What?”
“Madison filed a police report. She says you assaulted her. That you threatened her. That you stole her property.”
I stood up slowly from the sofa. “That’s absurd.”
“I know. But she’s also filed a civil claim. Against you. Against the company. She’s claiming Daniel promised her a share of everything. That she was acting as co-owner. That you illegally locked her out.” Sarah paused. “And she’s got Daniel backing her up.”
The words hit me like cold water. “Daniel?”
“He signed an affidavit. Supporting everything she said. He swears the house was jointly his. That you transferred ownership fraudulently. That he never intended to sign over authority. He says you manipulated him.”
I gripped the edge of the table until my knuckles turned white. “He’s lying.”
“I know he is. But Emily… with his signature… this gets messy. Very messy. And she’s demanding you return everything immediately. The house. The accounts. Access to everything.”
I walked to the window and stared out through the gap in the curtains. “He’s choosing her. Even after everything.”
“He’s terrified, Emily. Madison has him cornered. She knows about the loans. She knows about Vance. She’s threatening to hand everything over to the lenders if he doesn’t cooperate. Daniel isn’t backing her out of love. He’s backing her out of fear.”
“Then let her have him,” I said, my voice trembling. “But she will never have what is mine.”
“Emily… be careful. She’s also asking for temporary custody of Lily.”
The room went silent.
“She what?”
“She told the police Lily was already calling her ‘Mom.’ That you’re unstable. That you’re dangerous. That she’s the safer parent figure.” Sarah’s voice was grim. “She’s using Lily to hurt you.”
I closed my eyes. I saw Lily standing on the stairs, tears streaming down her face. I saw Madison grabbing her arm. I heard her telling my daughter I wasn’t coming back.
Rage burned through me, hot and blinding.
“She will never get near my daughter,” I said. “Not while I’m alive.”
“I’m filing counter-documents immediately. Restraining order. Perjury charges. Everything I have. But Emily… she’s also gone to the lenders. She’s told Vance exactly where to find you.”
My eyes flew open. “She what?”
“She told Vance that you hold all the assets. That you control everything. That Daniel has nothing. She handed him your name. Your address. Everything.” Sarah took a sharp breath. “She’s handed you to the wolves, Emily. To save herself.”
I stood there, breathless.
Madison had played it perfectly. She had Daniel lying for her. She had the police investigating me. She had handed me over to the dangerous men my husband owed millions to. And then she would sit back and wait. Wait until Vance took everything from me. Wait until I had nothing left. And then she would step in and take what remained.
She had planned every single move.
My phone buzzed again. A text message. Unknown number.
*Nice house. Nice daughter. Shame if something happened to her.*
My blood turned to ice.
I showed the message to Sarah. She swore under her breath.
“They’re getting closer. Emily, you need to move. Tonight. Now.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere no one knows. Not even Daniel. Not even Madison. Somewhere completely off the grid until this is resolved.” She paused. “I’ll send a car. Pack light. Bring Lily. And Emily… don’t trust anyone. Not even people you think are on your side.”
I ended the call and stood there for a long moment.
Daniel had signed everything away. Madison had handed me to the lenders. Both of them together had built a trap around me. And they were waiting for me to break.
They thought I would run. They thought I would hide. They thought I would beg.
I looked down at my hands. Steady. Cold. Clear.
They were wrong.
I walked into the living room. Lily was sitting on the floor, coloring. She looked up when I entered.
“Mommy?”
I knelt beside her. “Pack your bag, sweetheart. We’re going on another trip.”
Lily’s face fell. “Are we running away?”
I touched her cheek gently. “No, baby. We’re going to get ready. Because soon… we’re going to go back. And we’re going to fix everything.”
Lily studied my face. Then she nodded slowly. “Okay. I’ll pack my rabbit.”
I watched her walk to her room. My brave, resilient girl. She had lost so much already. But she still trusted me.
And I would not let her down.
I packed quickly. Only what was essential. Documents. Money. Lily’s favorite things. The file Sarah had given me.
I stopped at the window one last time.
Down the street, a car I hadn’t seen before was parked beneath a streetlight. Engine idling. Two figures inside. Watching the building entrance.
They were already here.
I stepped back from the window, heart hammering but mind calm. They expected me to walk out the front door. Scared. Hasty. Panicked.
I walked to the back door. Opened it quietly. The stairwell was empty.
I picked up Lily. “Put your head against my shoulder. Close your eyes. Don’t look up until I tell you.”
“Okay, Mommy.”
I carried her down the back stairs. Floor after floor. Quiet. Fast. Steady.
We emerged into the alleyway behind the building. Rain was falling. I pulled my coat over Lily’s head and walked quickly toward the dark sedan waiting exactly where Sarah said it would be.
The driver didn’t say a word. He opened the door. We climbed in. Seconds later, we were merging into traffic.
I looked back once. The apartment building receding into the rain. The car beneath the streetlight. Still waiting. Still watching the wrong door.
Madison thought she had trapped me. She thought she had cornered me.
She had only made me angry.
I looked down at Lily. She was asleep again, exhausted, her head resting on my lap.

Sleep well, my love.
Because when I return… the trap will be waiting for them.
