Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CLUE

Morning came soft and gray.
I woke with my head resting on the edge of Lily’s bed. My neck ached. My cheek still throbbed. Sunlight filtered through the curtains in thin, pale streaks. I sat up slowly, stiff and sore, and looked at Lily.
She was awake. She was lying very still, staring at the door.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” I whispered.
She turned her head slowly toward me. Her eyes were heavy. “Are they still gone?”
“Still gone. And they’re staying gone.”
Lily sat up, clutching her rabbit. “Can we have pancakes?”
I smiled, and it felt thin and fragile. “We can have all the pancakes you want.”
I made breakfast. Fluffy golden ones with syrup and strawberries. Lily ate in silence, watching the front door from her chair, as if she expected it to burst open any second. Every time a car passed outside, she flinched.
I watched her. Every small movement. Every nervous glance.
Madison hadn’t just slapped me. She had terrified my daughter. And Daniel had let it happen.
After breakfast, I got Lily dressed in warm clothes and called Sarah. She answered on the first ring.
“Emily. How is Lily?”
“Scared. Quiet. But she’s here with me.”
“And Daniel?”
“Blocked. He’s been texting from different numbers.”
“Keep blocking. The restraining order is filed. If he comes within fifty feet of you or Lily, he goes straight to jail.” Sarah paused. “Emily… there’s something else.”
My stomach tightened. “What?”
“I’ve been looking through the company records. The ones Daniel signed over to you.” Sarah hesitated. “He didn’t just sign over authority. He emptied accounts. Moved funds. Large amounts. Over the last three months.”
I gripped the phone tighter. “How much?”
“Enough. Hundreds of thousands.”
The room tilted. “He took that much?”
“Quietly. Slowly. Over time. Before he signed the authority. Which means… he knew exactly what he was doing. He cleared out what he could before handing you the rest.”
I sat down hard on the kitchen chair. “Why would he—”
“Because he planned to leave you with nothing,” Sarah said, her voice flat and cold. “He thought he’d take the money, move in with Madison, and leave you holding an empty house and a pile of debt. But he made one mistake.”
“He signed the authority papers.”
“Exactly. And those papers gave you retroactive access to everything. Every account. Every transaction. Every transfer. He thought he was protecting himself. He accidentally handed you the evidence.”
I breathed out slowly. “So I can find out where it went.”
“Every penny. And Emily… I think you’re going to want to see where it went.”
Sarah sent the file ten minutes later.
I opened it at the kitchen table while Lily played quietly with her blocks in the living room. I scrolled slowly. Transaction after transaction. Transfer after transfer. Small ones at first. Then larger ones. Dates, times, account numbers.
Three months of withdrawals. Three months of draining accounts while smiling at me across the dinner table. While telling me he was working late. While holding my hand and kissing my forehead and lying straight to my face.
I kept scrolling.
And then I saw it.
A payment. Made two weeks ago. To a luxury apartment complex downtown. Six months’ rent in full. And a name.
Madison Cole.
My breath caught.
He had paid for her apartment. With my money. With our money. While living in my house. While wearing my robe. While telling me everything was fine.
But there was more.
Another payment. Same week. Jewelry store. Fifteen thousand dollars.
And then another. Law firm. A retainer.
For Madison Cole.
I sat back in my chair, staring at the screen.
He hadn’t just been having an affair. He had been preparing. Setting her up. Buying her things. Paying her lawyers. All while living under my roof. All while pretending to be my husband.
And then I saw the final entry. Dated three days ago. The very morning I left for my conference.
*Transfer to Madison Cole: $50,000. Final.*
I stared at that number for a long time. Fifty thousand dollars. Sent the day I left. The day he brought her into my house. The day he let her move in.
He had planned everything. My trip. Her arrival. Him telling me she lived there now. He had thought he would send me away, take everything worth having, and start a new life with her.
He had been so sure I wouldn’t check the papers. So sure I wouldn’t call Sarah. So sure I would just… let him win.
I closed the file and stood up. My hands were shaking.
“Mommy?”
Lily stood in the doorway, watching me. Her face was pale.
I walked over and knelt down. “Yes, baby?”
“Daddy gave her a present,” she said quietly.
My heart stopped. “What present?”
Lily twisted her fingers together. “A box. Shiny. He gave it to her when you were gone. She showed me. She said… she said Daddy was going to buy her everything.”
I stared at my daughter. “Did she say anything else?”
Lily nodded slowly. “She said this was her house now. And that you wouldn’t be coming back.”
Something cold and sharp settled deep in my chest.
Madison hadn’t just appeared. She had been brought here. Deliberately. Prepared. Funded.
Daniel hadn’t made a mistake. He had executed a plan.
And he had failed. Because he’d been too lazy to read the papers he’d signed. Too arrogant to think I might actually check. Too confident that I would stay quiet and obedient and let him destroy me.
I stood up slowly. “Thank you for telling me, Lily.”
She looked up at me, eyes wide. “Are you mad?”
“Not at you. Never at you.” I touched her face gently. “You did the right thing. Always tell me the truth. No matter what.”
Lily nodded, but she looked uncertain.
I walked back to the table and looked at the screen again. The list of payments. The dates. The names.
Sarah was right. This was only the beginning. There was more. I could feel it.
Why was he in such a hurry? Why empty the accounts? Why pay her everything at once? Why bring her into my house the moment I left?
And why had he signed those papers?
I picked up my phone and called Sarah again.
“Emily?”
“Dig deeper,” I said. “There’s something he’s not telling us. Something he’s hiding even from the records. Find out why he needed so much cash. Find out why he was in such a hurry to leave.”
Sarah was quiet for a moment. “I was hoping you wouldn’t ask that yet.”
“Tell me.”
“Emily… the loan. The one he said he needed to protect the company? It wasn’t from a bank.”
My blood ran cold. “Who was it from?”
“Private lenders. Very aggressive ones. And from what I’m seeing… he owes them a great deal more than he told you.”
I gripped the edge of the table. “How much more?”
“Millions, Emily. He’s been gambling. On bad deals. On risky investments. On things he never told you about. And he’s been borrowing to pay the interest.” Sarah paused. “He didn’t sign those papers to protect the house. He signed them because he thought he was going to lose everything anyway. He wanted to strip the house clean first. Run away with the cash. Leave you holding the debts.”
The room spun.
“He was going to leave me with the debts?” I whispered.
“He was going to leave you with everything. The house. The company. The loans. The mess. And he and Madison would have started over somewhere else, with your money.”
I closed my eyes.
All of it made sense now. The distance. The secrecy. The papers he rushed me to sign. The woman he brought into my home.
He hadn’t just fallen out of love. He had used me. He had used my name. My assets. My home. He had planned to ruin me so he could build a new life with someone else.
I opened my eyes and looked at Lily. She was sitting on the floor, arranging her blocks carefully, humming softly to herself. Safe. Unaware.
He had gambled with everything. Including her future. Including her safety.
And then I realized one more thing.
Madison thought she was the winner. She thought she had taken everything from me. She didn’t know that Daniel owed millions. She didn’t know the money he gave her was stolen. She didn’t know that the man who promised her everything was running from the very people he’d borrowed from.
Sarah was right. There was more. Much more.
“Keep digging,” I told her. “Find out who he owes. And how much. And everything else he’s been hiding.”
“I will,” Sarah said. “But Emily… be careful. These aren’t people you want to anger. If Daniel owes them this much… they’ll come looking for it. And they’ll come looking for him.”
I ended the call and stood there for a long time.
Outside, a car slowed down.
I walked to the window and pulled the curtain aside just enough to see.
A black sedan. Parked across the street. Engine off. Two men sitting in the front seat. Watching my house.
My breath caught.
I stood perfectly still, hidden behind the curtain, and watched them. They didn’t get out. They didn’t move. They just sat there. Looking at my front door.
I stepped back slowly, heart hammering.
Had they come for Daniel? Or had they come for me?
Because if Sarah was right… if Daniel owed them millions… and if everything was in my name now…
May you like
They weren’t looking for him anymore.
They were looking for me.
