Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST RETURNS

The first visit was quiet. Brief. Careful.
Daniel sat across from Lily. He didn’t touch her. He didn’t ask for hugs. He didn’t cry. He just listened. And spoke softly. And answered her questions honestly.
When it was over, Lily walked out holding my hand.
“He looks sad,” she said.
“He has a reason to be.”
“Will he get better?”
“I hope so, baby.”
The visits continued. Once a week. Then twice. Slowly, carefully, they rebuilt their bond. Brick by fragile brick.
Months passed.
One afternoon, Sarah called me. Her voice was tight.
“They found Madison.”
My heart stopped. “Where?”
“Spain. She was living under a false name. Spending money. Living well. Vance’s people picked her up two days ago. He… wants to know what you want.”
I breathed out slowly. “What do you mean?”
“Vance doesn’t care about prison. He cares about his money. And his vengeance. He’s giving you the choice. Hand her over to the police… or let him handle it.”
I stood silent for a long time.
“Hand her over,” I said. “Legally. Properly. Let her face justice. Not vengeance. Justice.”
“Are you sure?”
“Madison broke laws. She threatened lives. She hurt people. She deserves to answer for it. Properly.”
“Very well.” Sarah paused. “Emily… she’s asking for you. She wants to speak to you. Before extradition.”
I hesitated. “Why?”
“She says she has something. Something she will only tell you. In person.”
I thought about it. For a long moment.
“Arrange it.”
Three days later, I sat across from Madison in a small, white room. She was guarded. Handcuffed. Wearing a standard detention uniform. She looked thinner. Tired. Defeated.
But her eyes… her eyes were still sharp. Still watching. Still calculating.
She looked at me. And she smiled. A weak, broken smile.
“You won,” she said.
“I didn’t play a game,” I said. “I just protected what was mine.”
Madison laughed softly. “That’s what you always said. ‘Mine.’ As if anything truly belongs to anyone.”
“Why did you ask for me?”
She leaned forward slightly. “Because there is something. Something Daniel doesn’t know. Something even Vance doesn’t know.”
My blood ran cold. “What?”
Madison looked me in the eye.
“The accident. Seven years ago. The woman Daniel killed.”
I froze.
“She wasn’t a random pedestrian, Emily.” Madison’s voice dropped. “She was my sister.”
The world seemed to tilt.
I stared at her. “Your… sister?”
“Everything I did… every step… every plan… it was all for her. To destroy him. To take everything he had. To leave him with nothing. Just as he left us.” Tears glistened in her eyes. But they were not tears of remorse. They were tears of rage. “He killed her. And he paid his way out of trouble. And he married you. And he lived a perfect, happy life. While we buried her.”
I sat motionless.
“You targeted him… for revenge.”
“I dedicated my life to destroying him. I found out everything. I got close. I learned his secrets. And then… I waited. Until the moment was perfect. Until I could take everything from him. Until I could make him feel exactly what I felt.” Madison’s voice trembled. “But then I realized… he wasn’t the only one living a perfect life. You were too. You had everything. And you knew nothing. About him. About her. About any of it.”
“So you decided to destroy me too.”
Madison nodded slowly. “You were part of his lie. His perfect family. His perfect life. How could I leave you untouched?”
I stood up slowly. “You told Lily to call you ‘Mom.’ You threatened to take my home. You held a gun to me… all because of something Daniel did before he ever met me?”
“Everything he had… was built on her death!” Madison cried out. “Every penny! Every smile! Every moment of happiness! It was all paid for with her blood!”
“And I was collateral damage.”
Madison fell silent. She looked away. “I didn’t want to hurt your daughter. Truly. But you… you stood in the way. And I couldn’t let anything stop me.”
I looked at the woman sitting in chains before me. I saw it all now. Every piece fit. Every madness. Every obsession. Every cruelty.
She wasn’t just a thief. She wasn’t just a mistress. She was a woman consumed by grief. And rage. And a need for revenge so absolute it had destroyed her completely.
“Madison,” I said quietly. “If you had come to me. If you had told me the truth… I would have left him. I would have walked away. I would have helped you.”
Madison looked at me. Her eyes filled with tears. Real tears.
“I know,” she whispered. “I realized it too late. By the time I knew you… I understood. You were nothing like him. You were innocent. And I… I couldn’t stop. Because stopping meant admitting I had become exactly like the man I wanted to destroy.”
Silence filled the room.
“Is that all?” I asked.
Madison nodded. “That is the secret. That is why I did it. So you would know. So you would understand. So you would leave him. And never let him near your daughter.”
She leaned forward. “He is a killer, Emily. He killed an innocent woman. And he got away with it. Do not let him near your child. Do not let him become the man she looks up to. Because he is built on lies. And blood.”
I stood there. The words echoing in my mind.
Madison sat back. “That is all I had to say. Now you know. Now you can choose.”
I turned and walked out of the room.
Behind me, Madison Cole sat alone. The woman who had destroyed everything because of a grief she could not let go of. A grief that had eaten her alive.
I walked out into the sunlight. Blinking. Breathing hard.
Everything made sense now. Every cruelty. Every obsession. Every choice.
But now… I had a choice of my own.
Tell Lily her father killed someone? Or keep it buried?
May you like
Send Daniel back to prison? Or let him rebuild his life?
Madison had given me the truth. And with it… the heaviest burden of all.
