Chapter 4 - STRANGERS ACROSS THE STREET

I stayed perfectly still behind the curtain.
The black sedan sat across the street. Dark windows. No license plate visible from this angle. The two men inside hadn’t moved in minutes. They just watched. My front door. My windows.
I pulled out my phone and texted Sarah.
*Black sedan parked across the street. Two men. Watching the house.*
She replied almost instantly.
*Stay inside. Lock doors. Don’t go out. I’m sending someone.*
I set the phone down and walked to the hallway. “Lily?”
“Still here, Mommy.” Her voice came from the living room.
I walked in and found her exactly where I’d left her, arranging her blocks into towers. She looked up at me, and her smile faded.
“Mommy? You look scared.”
I knelt down and smoothed her hair. “I’m not scared, sweetheart. I just need you to do something for me. Stay inside. Stay close to me. And don’t go near the windows, okay?”
Lily nodded slowly. “Okay.”
I checked every lock. Front door. Back door. Side door. Every window. I double-checked the alarm. All green. All secure. Then I returned to the living room and sat beside Lily, keeping her between me and the wall, where she couldn’t be seen from outside.
Time dragged.
Ten minutes. Twenty. Half an hour.
The car didn’t leave.
I stood up again and peeked through the curtain. The sedan was still there. One of the men was looking directly at my house. As if he knew I was standing behind the glass.
My phone buzzed. Sarah.
*Private security ten minutes out. Don’t confront them. Don’t make yourself visible.*
I texted back: They’re still here.
*Stay put.*
I paced the room. Thoughts racing.
Who were they? The people Daniel owed? Had they followed him here? Or had they found out that everything was in my name now? That I was the one holding the assets? That I was the one who could pay?
Daniel had left yesterday. But they were here today. Watching my house.
Had Daniel told them where to find me? Had he given them my address? My name?
My blood ran cold.
He owed them millions. He had nothing left. But I did. The house. The company. The accounts. He had signed everything over to me. And then walked out.
Had he handed me to them? As collateral?
“Mommy?” Lily tugged at my sleeve. “Why are you walking so fast?”
I stopped and forced a smile. “Just thinking, baby.”
“Is it because of the car?”
I froze. “You saw it?”
Lily nodded solemnly. “Two men. They were looking at our house. One of them pointed.”
My heart sank. “When?”
“Before. When you were on the phone.” She twisted her fingers together. “Are they friends of Daddy?”
I looked at my daughter. At her frightened face. At everything that had happened in twenty-four hours. And I realized: yes. In the worst possible way.
“I don’t know who they are, Lily. But we’re safe inside. The doors are locked. Help is coming.”
Lily didn’t look convinced. She climbed into my lap and wrapped both arms around my neck, pressing her face into my shoulder. “I want Daddy to come make them go away.”
Those words hit me like a fist.
She didn’t understand. She didn’t know that the man she was asking for was the reason those men were sitting outside. That he had brought this danger to our door. That he had gambled with our lives.
I held her tight. “I know, baby. But I’m here. And I will keep you safe. No matter what.”
Ten minutes later, a white SUV pulled up behind the black sedan. Two men in dark jackets stepped out. They walked straight to the sedan and knocked on the driver’s window.
I held my breath.
The window rolled down. Words were exchanged. Sharp. Brief.
The men in the sedan looked toward my house. Then they looked back at the security guards. Slowly, the sedan pulled away. It drove past my house slowly. Once. Twice. Then turned the corner and was gone.
The security guard walked to my door and knocked.
I opened it, keeping the chain latched.
“Mrs. Reed? I’m with the security firm Sarah Thorne retained. The vehicle is leaving. We got their plate and description. They didn’t give names, but they got the message. We’re staying visible for the rest of the day.”
I closed the door, locked it, and leaned back against the wood. My legs felt weak.
Lily was watching me. “Are they gone?”
“Yes, baby. They’re gone.”
But I knew the truth. They’d be back.
I called Sarah.
“They were watching the house,” I said. “And they knew I was here.”
“Daniel’s lenders,” Sarah said. “They’re tracking the assets. They know the house transferred to you. They know you control the company. They’re coming after what they’re owed.”
“Which is millions.”
“Which is millions. And Emily… Daniel didn’t just borrow from one group. He borrowed from several. And the ones who sent that car? They’re the most dangerous.”
I sat down heavily on the sofa. “What do they want?”
“Money. Or assets. Or leverage. And right now… you are the asset.”
I thought about the papers. The signatures. The transfers. Daniel had signed everything over to me. Then walked out. Leaving me holding the house, the company, the authority… and the debts.
“Did he do this on purpose?” I asked quietly. “Sign everything to me… so the lenders would come after me instead of him?”
Sarah was silent for a long time. “Emily… I’ve been looking at the timeline. He signed the transfer three months ago. That was also when he made his largest loan. And when he rented the apartment for Madison. And when he started emptying your accounts.”
“And?”
“And… the signature on the authority forms. It’s his. But the date… Emily, I think he was tricked. Or coerced. Or signed without reading under pressure. But the lenders… they know the assets are yours now. Whether it was intentional or not… Daniel has handed them you.”
I thought about the night before. The way Daniel had looked when he realized what he’d signed. The shock. The genuine panic. Had he truly not known? Or was he just that good of an actor?
“I need to know where Daniel is,” I said. “If they find him first… he’ll tell them anything. Sign anything. Hand them anything.”
“I’m working on it,” Sarah said. “But Emily… be careful. If Daniel is running from them… he might come back here. To you. To the house. To the assets.”
I ended the call and looked around my living room. The place I’d always thought was safe. My sanctuary.
Yesterday, Madison had been here. Today, strangers. Tomorrow… who?
I walked over to Lily and knelt down. She was still sitting quietly, watching me.
“Lily,” I said gently. “If anyone comes to the door… anyone at all… even if it’s Daddy… you do not open it. You do not answer. You come get me. Do you understand?”
Lily’s eyes went wide. “Not even Daddy?”
“Not even Daddy. Not until I say so.”
She hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Okay.”
I stood up and walked to the window again. The street was quiet. But I knew. They would be back. Or others like them.
Daniel had left me with so many secrets. Debts. Lies. A mistress in my robe. But there was one secret he hadn’t counted on.
He hadn’t realized that when he handed me control… he handed me the power to fight back.
He thought he was protecting himself. Instead, he had given me every tool I needed to uncover the truth. To follow the money. To find out exactly who he owed. And exactly what he was hiding.
My phone buzzed. A text message. No name. Unknown number.
*Tell Daniel we know he’s there. We want what is owed. Or we come back.*
My heart stopped.
I stared at the words.
They didn’t want me. They wanted Daniel. And they thought he was here.
I looked around the house. At the locked doors. At the quiet rooms. At Lily playing on the floor.
Daniel wasn’t here. But they thought he was. Which meant… he had told them he would be here. That he was staying here. That this was where they could find him.
He had given them my address. He had told them to come here.
Whether he planned it or not… he had led them straight to my door.
I gripped the phone tight.
If they thought Daniel was here… I could use that. I could let them come. I could show them the truth. I could show them that the man they were looking for had walked out and left me with everything except him.
But I couldn’t do it here. Not with Lily.
I walked over to my daughter. “Lily? Pack a bag. Your favorite things. We’re going away for a little while.”
She looked up, hopeful. “A vacation?”
“Something like that.” I touched her cheek gently. “Just us. Somewhere safe.”
Lily jumped up and ran to her room.
I stood in the living room, staring at the text message on my screen.
Daniel had brought danger to my door. He had handed my life to strangers. He had thought he could leave me holding the bag while he ran away with his mistress.
But he had forgotten one thing.
I wasn’t the woman he had married. Not anymore.
That woman had been soft. Trusting. Quick to forgive.
She died yesterday. The moment Madison walked into my house wearing my robe. The moment I realized my husband had been lying to me for months.
That woman was gone.
And I was still here.
I deleted the message. Locked my phone. And walked to help my daughter pack.
Let them watch. Let them wait.

When I return… I won’t be hiding.
I’ll be coming for the truth. Every last piece of it.
