Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

Months passed.

Autumn turned to winter. Winter turned to spring.

Lily grew. She blossomed. She made friends. She brought home drawings. She laughed again. Not just with me. But freely. Fully.

Occasionally, she would ask about Daniel. And I would answer honestly. Gently. Truthfully.

*“He’s still fixing his mistakes, baby. And when he’s done… if he’s truly done… then we will see.”*

She would nod. And accept it. And go back to playing.

But the questions grew fewer. And farther between.

My life settled into a rhythm. I ran the company. I managed the accounts. I attended meetings. I made decisions. I learned to trust myself. My judgment. My strength.

I was no longer the wife standing quietly beside her husband. I was the one in charge. And I was good at it.

One afternoon, Sarah called me.

“Daniel is being transferred to a minimum-security facility closer by. He’s eligible for supervised visits. With Lily. If you approve.”

The question hung between us.

I sat in my office. Staring out at the city.

“He’s been behaving perfectly,” Sarah continued. “Model inmate. Counseling. Anger management. Financial restitution. He’s done everything asked of him. And he’s never once asked for special treatment. Or for leniency. He just… waits.”

“And Madison?”

“Still missing. Vance is closing in. She’s been using false papers. Moving frequently. But she slipped up. A withdrawal. A phone call. He’s close. Very close.”

I breathed out slowly. “And Daniel has been consistent?”

“Every report. Every evaluation. He’s taken full responsibility. Blames no one but himself. And he’s never once said a word against you. Or Lily. Or even Madison.”

I thought about it. For days.

I thought about the man who had held my hand through my mother’s funeral. I thought about the man who had carried Lily home from the hospital. I thought about the man who had let Madison walk into our home and destroy everything.

Could I separate the two men? The one I had loved… and the one Madison had broken?

One evening, I sat beside Lily’s bed while she was falling asleep.

“Lily,” I said softly. “If you could see Daddy… would you want to?”

She opened her eyes. Thought about it. “Is he better now?”

“He’s trying to be.”

Lily was quiet for a long time. Then she said, “If he says sorry… and means it… then okay. But he has to promise never to let that woman come back.”

My heart ached. “He would never let her come back. He knows what she did.”

Lily looked at me with eyes so wise they broke my heart. “And if he breaks his promise… you will protect us again, right?”

I touched her face. “Always. No matter what.”

“Then yes. I would like to see him.”

I kissed her forehead. “Sleep well, my love.”

The following week, I drove to the facility.

I sat in the visitation room. And waited.

Daniel walked in. He looked different. Thinner. Shorter hair. Calmer. He walked steadily. Without hesitation. Without looking around nervously.

He sat down across from me. Separated by glass.

He saw me. And he waited. Quietly. Respectfully.

“Lily wants to see you,” I said.

His eyes filled. He nodded slowly. Once. “Thank you.”

“On my terms, Daniel. Supervised. Short visits. No pressure. No promises. If she becomes uncomfortable… it ends. Immediately.”

“Anything. Whatever you decide.”

“And you will not ask her for forgiveness. Not yet. You will not burden her with your guilt. You will just… be her father. The best version of him you can be.”

“I can do that.” He leaned forward slightly. “Emily… I will never ask you to forgive me. I will never expect it. But I hope… someday… Lily might. That is enough for me.”

I studied him. “You’ve changed.”

“I’ve had a lot of time to think. To read. To understand what happened. How I let it happen. How I failed everyone.” He took a breath. “Madison didn’t destroy me, Emily. I handed her the hammer. And I stood still while she swung. That is the truth. And I will carry it forever.”

“Are you still protecting her?” I asked. “After everything?”

Daniel shook his head. “I feel sorry for her. She was empty. Broken in ways I still don’t understand. But I will not protect her. Not anymore. She made her choices. Just as I made mine.”

We sat in silence.

“Vance is close,” I said. “Madison will be caught soon.”

Daniel nodded. “I know. And when she is… I will testify. I will tell them everything. Every threat. Every lie. Every blackmail. I will do whatever is needed to make sure she never hurts anyone again.”

I stood up. “The first visit will be next week. Short. One hour. Public room. Supervision present.”

“Thank you, Emily.”

I walked to the door. Paused.

“Daniel… if you hurt her… even once… I will end it. Completely. You will never see either of us again.”

“I know,” he said quietly. “And I would not blame you.”

I walked out.

To forgive is a choice. To trust… is a privilege.

I had not forgiven him. Not yet. And I did not trust him. Not fully.

But I was willing to give him the chance to become the man he should have been. For Lily.

And if he failed… I was strong enough to walk away. Again.
