Chapter 9: The Last Move

For a moment, nobody moved.

Michael’s words sat between us like something poisonous.

*“I never thought she would try to take your son.””*

I stared at my brother.

The person who had spent seventeen years carrying a secret.

The person who had allowed me to build a life on top of a lie.

“You knew.””

My voice was quiet.

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than another excuse would have.

Because there was no denial.

No attempt to escape.

Just the truth.

“You knew who she was.””

Michael nodded.

“You knew what she did.””

Another nod.

“And you watched me marry her.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“Fix it?””

I stepped closer.

“You let me bring her into my home.””

“I know.””

“You let her raise Jamal.””

“I know.””

“You let my son sleep under the same roof as someone who wanted to destroy him.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I know.””

My anger finally broke through.

“Then you don’t get to say you were trying to help.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Jamal stood beside me.

Silent.

But I knew him.

I knew that silence.

He was hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because once again, adults had made decisions around him without caring how much it cost him.

I turned toward him.

“Jamal.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“Dad, everyone keeps saying sorry.””

The words stopped me.

He looked around the hallway.

“Mom. Monique. Uncle Michael. Aunt Rebecca.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone knew something.””

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“And nobody told me.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Because he was right.

Everyone had been protecting something.

A reputation.

A relationship.

A secret.

Everyone except him.

I walked over and hugged him.

This time, he didn’t pull away.

“I promise you,” I whispered.

“No more secrets.””

He held onto that sentence.

Like he needed to believe it.

The next morning felt like waking up inside someone else’s life.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Monique was gone.

Her clothes.

Her suitcase.

Her jewelry box.

Everything she could take quickly had disappeared.

But she left one thing behind.

A message.

Written on the kitchen counter.

One sentence.

*You still don’t know the truth about Laura.*

I stared at the handwriting.

Jamal stood beside me.

“She wants you to chase her.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knows you.””

He pointed at the note.

“She knows you won’t stop until you understand everything.””

That was true.

But there was something else.

The note wasn’t a threat.

It was an invitation.

She wanted me to find her.

The question was why.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No response.

Then I heard her breathing.

Monique.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Somewhere safe.””

“You think threatening my son makes you safe?””

Her voice changed.

“You still think this is about Jamal.””

I gripped the phone.

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Your brother told you his version.””

“And?””

“And Michael is a liar.””

I looked at Michael, who was sitting across the room.

He heard her voice through the speaker.

“What did you do?”” he whispered.

Monique continued.

“You think I planned all of this.””

“Didn’t you?””

A quiet laugh.

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice became colder.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then help me.””

“You think Laura was innocent.””

I froze.

Jamal looked at me.

“What?””

Monique continued.

“She wasn’t.””

The words felt impossible.

“Don’t.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“You don’t get to use Laura to justify what you did.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice softened.

“Daniel, Laura was about to leave you.””

The room went silent.

I felt something twist inside me.

“What?””

“She had plans.””

“Lies.””

“Ask Rebecca.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked away.

That small movement made my stomach drop.

“Rebecca?””

Nobody answered.

Monique continued.

“Your perfect memory of Laura is not real.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“You’re lying.””

“Maybe.””

A pause.

“Or maybe everyone has been lying except me.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then I turned to Rebecca.

“Is there something you want to tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know she would say that.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked down.

“Laura was unhappy.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Unhappy?””

Rebecca nodded.

“After Jamal was born, she struggled.””

I frowned.

“She loved him.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Rebecca sighed.

“I’m saying she was overwhelmed.””

I looked at the floor.

Memories came rushing back.

Laura sitting beside Jamal’s crib.

Laura singing to him.

Laura telling me he was the best thing that ever happened to us.

Could that have all been fake?

No.

I refused to believe that.

“She loved our son.””

Rebecca nodded.

“She did.””

“Then what was Monique talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Michael finally spoke.

“Because Monique knows how to use half-truths.””

I looked at him.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning Laura had problems.””

He swallowed.

“But not the kind Monique wants you to believe.””

“What problems?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Laura found out about the money.””

I waited.

“She was planning to expose me.””

“And?””

“She also wanted to leave.””

My heart stopped.

“Leave me?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Jamal.

“She wanted to take Jamal somewhere safe.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she thought someone was dangerous.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“Monique.””

The contradiction made my head spin.

Monique said Laura wanted to leave me.

Michael said Laura wanted to escape Monique.

Someone was lying.

But who?

Then Rebecca suddenly stood.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know what?””

She walked toward the stairs.

“There’s something I never showed you.””

She disappeared upstairs.

A minute later, she returned holding a small box.

“I found this with Laura’s things.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She opened the box.

Inside was a necklace.

And a folded piece of paper.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was Laura’s.

My breath caught.

It was a letter.

But not to me.

To Jamal.

The first line made my heart stop.

*“My sweet boy, if you are reading this, then something happened before I could tell you the truth myself.””*

Jamal stepped closer.

His hands trembled.

I kept reading.

*“Your father is the strongest person I know, but sometimes he trusts people too much.””*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*“I need you to know something. None of this was your fault.””*

I looked at Jamal.

He was crying silently.

I continued.

*“The people who hurt our family are not the people you think.””*

The next sentence made my entire body freeze.

*“The person who caused the accident was not trying to kill me.””*

I stopped.

Everyone looked at me.

“What?””

I read it again.

*“They were trying to kill someone else.””*

The room went cold.

The letter continued.

*“Daniel, if you ever find this, ask yourself one question…”*

My hands shook.

I read the final line.

*“Why did the person who saved you that night never tell you what they saw?””*

I looked up.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the entire story changed.

The accident.

The money.

Monique.

Michael.

Everything.

One question remained.

May you like

Who saved me?

And why had they spent seventeen years hiding it?
