Chapter 6: The Accident That Wasn’t
The word stayed in the air.
*Monique.*
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to tell Rebecca she was confused, traumatized, or protecting herself from something else.
Anything would have been easier than accepting what I had just heard.
But deep down, I already knew.
Because suddenly every strange moment from the past few months had found a place to belong.
The questions about money.
The interest in my accounts.
The way she pushed Jamal away.
The way she always became nervous whenever Michael’s name came up.
It wasn’t random.
It was a pattern.
And I had been too blind to see it.
Jamal stood completely still.
His face had lost all emotion.
That scared me more than if he had cried.
“Say that again,” he whispered.
Rebecca looked at him.
“Jamal…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Say it again.””
Rebecca wiped her tears.
“Monique was with Michael the night your mother died.””
The room seemed to shrink.
Jamal looked down.
Then he laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
“That’s impossible.””
Nobody answered.
“My dad married her.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“My dad trusted her.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, you don’t understand.””
He looked at Rebecca.
“She knew my mom?””
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“How?””
I looked at her.
That was the question I needed answered too.
Rebecca took a deep breath.
“Before your mother died, Michael introduced Monique as someone who could help with investments.””
My stomach turned.
“She was involved before Laura died?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Jamal stepped backward.
“So she didn’t just come into our family afterward.””
“No.””
Rebecca’s voice became smaller.
“She was already connected to it.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I thought meeting Monique was fate.
A second chance.
A person who came into my life when I was finally ready to love again.
Now I wondered if she had entered my life because she knew exactly where the cracks were.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked Rebecca.
She looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing you.””
The answer made me angry.
Not because I didn’t understand fear.
Because I understood it too well.
“You let me build a life with someone who might have been involved in my wife’s death.””
Rebecca started crying.
“I didn’t know how deep it went.””
“But you knew something.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
“What did you know?””
Rebecca sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“After Laura died, I found a folder in her apartment.””
“What folder?””
“Documents.””
“About the investment?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Jamal.
He was listening silently.
Rebecca continued.
“Laura had been suspicious of Michael. She thought he was moving money without telling her.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Rebecca looked at the floor.
“Because she wanted proof first.””
I felt my throat tighten.
That sounded exactly like Laura.
Careful.
Patient.
Always trying to avoid unnecessary damage.
“She wrote down everything,” Rebecca said.
“Names. Dates. Transactions.””
“Where is the folder now?””
Rebecca hesitated.
That hesitation answered before her words did.
“Rebecca.””
She looked at me.
“I gave it to Michael.””
My anger exploded.
“You did what?””
“I was young.””
“You were an adult.””
“I was scared!””
Her voice broke.
“I had just lost my sister. I had a child in the family who had lost his mother. Michael told me the documents were dangerous.””
“And you believed him?””
She closed her eyes.
“I wanted to.””
The room went silent.
Because that was the truth behind so many betrayals.
People didn’t always believe lies because they were stupid.
Sometimes they believed them because the truth was too painful.
I turned away.
“Where is Michael now?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
She stood.
“He called me tonight.””
That got my attention.
“When?””
“After you called him.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did he say?””
Rebecca looked terrified.
“He said you found out.””
“And?””
“He said if you came looking for answers, I should give you enough information to make you stop.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Because he said you were getting too close.””
Jamal looked at her.
“Close to what?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
I stepped forward.
“Close to what?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The truth about Laura’s death.””
We left Rebecca’s house twenty minutes later.
The entire drive home, nobody spoke.
Jamal sat in the passenger seat staring out the window.
I knew that look.
He was trying to process something too big for one night.
When we reached the house, the lights were still on.
But something felt different.
Wrong.
I parked.
“Stay in the car.””
Jamal immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Jamal.””
“I’m done waiting outside while everyone decides what happens to me.””
I looked at him.
And I understood.
He wasn’t refusing because he was angry.
He was refusing because he was tired of being treated like a child.
So I nodded.
“Stay close.””
We walked inside together.
The living room was empty.
“Monique?””
No answer.
I checked the kitchen.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
The back door was open.
Cold air moved through the house.
“She left,” Jamal said.
I looked around.
“No.””
Something was missing.
Not a person.
Something else.
I rushed upstairs.
Jamal followed.
My office door was open.
I stopped.
I never left my office door open.
Inside, drawers were pulled out.
Papers scattered everywhere.
The safe behind the painting was open.
My blood ran cold.
I stepped inside.
The documents I kept there were gone.
The property papers.
The financial records.
The old insurance documents.
Everything.
“Dad…”
Jamal stood near the doorway.
“What did she take?””
I looked at the empty safe.
Then at him.
“Evidence.””
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Another message.
I opened it.
A picture.
It showed Monique sitting inside a car.
Next to her was Michael.
They were parked somewhere dark.
The caption underneath said:
*You should have listened when I told you to stop.*
My hands tightened.
Jamal saw the picture.
“Uncle Michael.””
I nodded.
Then another message appeared.
This time, no picture.
Only words.
*Come alone if you want to know what happened to your first wife.*
I stared at the screen.
Jamal grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Dad, don’t.””
“He knows something.””
“And he wants you alone.””
I didn’t answer.
Because he was right.
The person who sent that message didn’t want a conversation.
They wanted control.
Then another notification appeared.
A security alert.
I opened the camera feed.
The hallway outside my office.
The same hallway where this nightmare started.
The camera showed something moving.
Someone was standing there.
Inside my house.
Right now.
I zoomed in.
The person turned toward the camera.
And my heart stopped.
Because it wasn’t Monique.
It wasn’t Michael.
It was someone I never expected.
Someone who had spent the last seventeen years protecting Jamal.
Rebecca.
She was standing in my hallway.
Holding a file folder.
May you like
And underneath the camera feed, a message appeared:
*She knows the part of the story she never told you.*
