Chapter 7: The Last Secret Rebecca Kept

I stared at the security camera feed.

Rebecca stood in my hallway.

Inside my house.

Holding a folder.

For several seconds, my brain refused to accept what I was seeing.

She had just been sitting in her living room crying.

She had just told me she was afraid.

She had just admitted she hid the truth.

And now she was here.

Again.

“Dad?””

Jamal’s voice was low.

I looked at him.

He had seen the screen.

His face was different now.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just tired.

Like another piece of his childhood had disappeared.

“She followed us,” he whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

But one thing was clear.

Nobody in this story was telling the whole truth.

I grabbed my phone and opened the camera speaker.

“Rebecca.””

Her head lifted immediately.

She knew I was watching.

The hallway camera picked up her voice.

“Daniel, please.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You’re in my house.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I need to give you something.””

I looked at the folder in her hand.

“You could have brought it when we were at your house.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward the camera.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“Because I wasn’t sure who was watching me.””

Jamal stepped closer.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“What if she’s lying again?””

That question hurt.

Because it was exactly what I was thinking.

But Rebecca had something.

The folder.

The evidence everyone seemed willing to destroy.

I grabbed my keys.

Jamal immediately stood.

“I’m coming.””

I wanted to tell him no.

I wanted to protect him.

But I stopped myself.

No more decisions about his life without him.

“Stay beside me.””

He nodded.

When we entered the hallway, Rebecca was standing near the stairs.

She looked older than she had an hour ago.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the truth for seventeen years had finally become too heavy.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I didn’t respond.

I looked at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

She held it tighter.

“The original documents.””

My heart skipped.

“The ones Laura had?””

She nodded.

“I found them.””

“When?””

“After you left.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Rebecca looked down.

“When you came to my house tonight, I realized I couldn’t keep protecting the wrong people.””

She handed me the folder.

I didn’t take it immediately.

“Who were you protecting?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That answer bothered me more than anything.

Because it sounded honest.

I took the folder.

Inside were old papers.

Bank records.

Printed emails.

Handwritten notes.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Laura.

My first wife.

Standing outside a restaurant.

With Michael.

And Monique.

Before Laura died.

I stared at it.

Jamal stepped closer.

“That’s Mom.””

I nodded.

The date was printed on the back.

Three weeks before the accident.

My hands shook.

Rebecca spoke quietly.

“That was the last time I saw her alive.””

I looked at her.

“What happened?””

“She called me that night.””

“What did she say?””

Rebecca swallowed.

“She said she finally knew what Michael was doing.””

I looked at the documents.

“What was he doing?””

“Moving money.””

“From where?””

Rebecca looked at Jamal.

Then at me.

“From the account your wife created for him.””

Jamal froze.

“My college fund?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She found out money was disappearing.””

I flipped through the papers.

There were transfers.

Multiple ones.

Small amounts.

Large amounts.

Enough to avoid attention.

“This is impossible.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to one page.

“Look at the dates.””

I did.

The dates.

The transactions.

Then the final transfer.

The day before Laura died.

My stomach dropped.

The account had been almost completely emptied.

Jamal saw it.

“Someone took everything?””

I nodded slowly.

Rebecca’s voice cracked.

“Laura was going to confront Michael the next morning.””

I looked up.

“And she died that night.””

Nobody spoke.

The connection was obvious.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Why would Monique be involved?””

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

She looked at me.

“Because I never understood that part.””

I waited.

“She wasn’t with Michael for money at first.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?””

Rebecca looked at the photograph.

“She was with him because they had a relationship.””

The words landed heavily.

Jamal looked confused.

“Before Dad married her?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

All those years.

All those memories.

Monique hadn’t entered my life by accident.

She had been connected to my family before I even knew her.

“Then why marry me?””

Rebecca looked at the floor.

“Because after Laura died, Michael needed someone close to you.””

The hallway went silent.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“You’re saying she married me as part of a plan?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Jamal stepped away.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No.””

I looked at him.

He was staring at the photograph.

At the woman he once called family.

“How could someone do that?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because I was asking myself the same thing.

Then the front door suddenly slammed.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved past the window.

Someone was outside.

I grabbed my phone.

The security camera feed showed the driveway.

A black SUV was parked there.

The headlights were on.

“Who is that?””

Rebecca’s face changed.

She knew.

“Rebecca?””

She whispered:

“He found me.””

My body tensed.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

The front door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Jamal stepped closer to me.

I moved in front of him.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from the other side.

A voice I recognized.

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Michael.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Michael continued.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The truth?””

The door shook slightly.

“You’ve been lying to me for seventeen years.””

Silence.

Then Michael said:

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

More than a lie would have.

“Yes?””

“I made mistakes.””

Jamal whispered:

“Mistakes?””

Michael’s voice became louder.

“Daniel, listen to me. Everything you think happened is wrong.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She was shaking.

“You were there,” I said.

Michael didn’t answer.

“You were there the night Laura died.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Jamal covered his mouth.

I felt my heart pounding.

“Did you kill her?””

The hallway became completely silent.

Michael’s answer came slowly.

“No.””

A breath escaped me.

Then he added:

“But I know who did.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Like she already knew what he was going to say.

I stared at the door.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The person standing behind you.””

Every muscle in my body tightened.

I turned.

Slowly.

Rebecca was no longer looking at me.

She was looking at Jamal.

And in her hand…

Was a second folder.

One I hadn’t seen before.

Jamal stepped back.

“Rebecca?””

Her face collapsed.

“Jamal…”

I felt the room spin.

Because the woman who raised my son.

The woman who promised to protect him.

Was holding something she had hidden for seventeen years.

And Michael’s voice came through the door again.

“Daniel…”

A pause.

“Ask Rebecca why Laura called her before she died.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Why did Laura call you?””

Rebecca started crying.

And finally whispered:

“Because she knew I was the only person who could save Jamal.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca looked at my son.

And said the words that changed everything:

“Your mother didn’t die because she found out about the money.””

May you like

She looked terrified.

“She died because she found out who was trying to take Jamal away from you.””
