Chapter 8: The Truth Laura Left Behind

Nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Jamal.

Not even Michael standing outside the door.

Rebecca’s words echoed through the hallway.

*“She died because she found out who was trying to take Jamal away from you.””*

I looked at my son.

Seventeen years.

That was how long I had protected him.

How long I had believed the biggest tragedy in our lives was losing Laura.

But now I wondered if losing her was only the beginning.

“Rebecca.””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

“Open that folder.””

She looked down.

Her hands were shaking.

“I should have done this years ago.””

“Yes.””

The answer came out colder than I intended.

“Yes, you should have.””

She flinched.

And I didn’t feel good about it.

But I couldn’t pretend anymore.

Too many people had protected their own secrets while my son carried the consequences.

Rebecca slowly opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

A letter.

And a small digital recorder.

Jamal stared at it.

“What is that?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Something your mother left behind.””

My breathing stopped.

“Laura recorded something?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She knew people would deny everything.””

She looked at me.

“She knew Michael would try to rewrite the story.””

A painful laugh escaped me.

“He always did.””

I remembered.

Michael as a teenager.

Michael blaming teachers when he failed tests.

Michael blaming friends when relationships ended.

Michael always finding a reason why something wasn’t his fault.

But I never imagined he could become this.

Rebecca handed me the recorder.

“I found it after Laura died.””

I stared at her.

“And you hid it?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael convinced me it would destroy the family.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Rebecca, the family was already destroyed.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

Jamal looked between us.

“Can we just listen?””

Everyone went quiet.

Because that was the moment.

The moment seventeen years of questions finally had a chance to become answers.

I pressed play.

Static filled the hallway.

Then a voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

A voice that still felt like home.

“Rebecca, if you’re listening to this, something happened.””

My knees almost gave out.

Laura.

Alive.

Speaking.

My hand gripped the recorder tighter.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

A pause.

Then her voice became quieter.

“Michael is involved in something dangerous.””

Jamal looked at me.

I kept listening.

“He told me the money was safe. He told me he was investing it for Jamal’s future.””

A shaky breath.

“But I found the records.””

My heart pounded.

“He was moving money.””

The recording crackled.

“And he wasn’t alone.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Jamal whispered:

“No…”

Laura continued.

“There is another person.””

A pause.

“Someone I never expected.””

The hallway felt colder.

“She knows Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“She knows Jamal.””

The recording stopped briefly.

Then Laura said:

“Monique.””

Jamal’s face went pale.

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her name from Laura herself made it real in a way nothing else had.

“She has been helping Michael.””

Laura’s voice trembled.

“They think Daniel will never suspect them because he wants to believe people are good.””

The words cut deeply.

Because they were true.

I wanted to believe people were good.

Even when they gave me reasons not to.

Laura continued:

“But they don’t understand something.””

A pause.

“Daniel’s greatest weakness is also his greatest strength.””

I held my breath.

“He loves his son more than anything.””

The recording crackled.

“And if something happens to me, Rebecca…”

Laura’s voice broke.

“Please protect Jamal.””

Jamal covered his mouth.

Tears filled his eyes.

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knew something would happen.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because he was right.

Laura had felt danger coming.

The recording continued.

“Don’t let them convince Daniel that Jamal is the problem.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Don’t let them separate father and son.””

Then a sound.

Like someone knocking.

Laura’s breathing changed.

Someone was there.

“Who is it?””

Her voice became distant.

Then the recording ended.

No goodbye.

No final words.

Just silence.

Nobody moved.

The truth was finally here.

And somehow, it hurt more than not knowing.

Jamal wiped his face.

“She knew.””

I put my arm around him.

“She always knew you.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the recorder.

“She knew she had to protect me.””

I wanted to tell him he was wrong.

But I couldn’t.

Because Laura had known.

She knew something was coming.

And she spent her final moments trying to save him.

A loud knock interrupted us.

Michael.

“Daniel.””

I turned toward the door.

“What?””

“You heard the recording.””

I didn’t answer.

“You know I’m not the only one responsible.””

My anger returned.

“You expect me to believe anything you say?””

“No.””

His voice was quieter.

“I expect you to ask questions.””

Rebecca looked terrified.

I opened the door.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Michael stood outside.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

But not innocent.

“You have a lot of nerve showing up here.””

He looked at Jamal.

Then looked away.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since the beginning.””

My hands tightened.

“The beginning of what?””

He looked at Monique’s empty space in the hallway.

“The plan.””

Jamal stepped forward.

“You planned this?””

Michael looked at him.

“No.””

“Then why were you involved?””

Michael looked down.

“Because I was weak.””

I almost laughed.

“That's your explanation?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It’s the reason.””

He stepped closer.

“I made mistakes. I thought I could fix them. Then every mistake became another secret.””

“What happened the night Laura died?””

Michael’s face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I went to meet her.””

“Why?””

“To give her the money back.””

Nobody spoke.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Michael looked at the ground.

“But it’s true.””

“Then why did she die?””

His eyes became wet.

“Because when I got there…”

He stopped.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“She wasn’t alone.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who was with her?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Monique.””

Jamal stepped back.

“Again with her.””

Michael nodded.

“She knew Laura was going to expose everything.””

“And?””

“She followed me.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“Because she wanted to make sure Laura stayed quiet.””

The words made the entire night feel heavier.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“I arrived too late.””

“What does that mean?””

He swallowed.

“I saw the car.””

My stomach turned.

“The crash?””

He nodded.

“But the car wasn’t the first thing I noticed.””

“What was?””

Michael looked at Jamal.

“Your mother’s phone.””

Silence.

“She had recorded a call before the accident.””

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

“What call?””

Michael looked at me.

“A call with Monique.””

Rebecca stepped back.

“You never told me that.””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I was scared.””

“What did the recording prove?””

Michael stared at me.

Then said:

“That Monique knew Laura was going to die.””

The hallway went silent.

I looked at Jamal.

Then at Michael.

Then at Rebecca.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

But one question remained.

“If you knew all of this…”

My voice shook.

“Why did you let me marry her?””

Michael closed his eyes.

And his answer destroyed whatever remained of my trust.

“Because I thought she would only take your money.””

May you like

A pause.

“But I never thought she would try to take your son.””
