Chapter 9: The Truth Rachel Took to Her Grave

The address Dr. Hale gave me belonged to a small private medical office on the outskirts of town.
Daniel insisted on accompanying me.
Edward also agreed to provide the original documents if we needed them.
Before leaving, I called Maya.
She answered immediately.
"Hi, Dad.""
"How are you doing?""
"Okay.""
"Is Devin with you?""
"He's watching television.""
I paused.
"Sweetheart, I need to ask you something.""
"Okay.""
"Do you remember your mother's doctor? Dr. Richard Hale?""
There was silence.
Then Maya said, "Yes.""
"Do you remember anything unusual about him?""
She hesitated.
"When Mom was in the hospital, he used to talk to me sometimes.""
"What did he say?""
"He always asked if Dad was coming back soon.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"I don't know. But one time he asked me if I knew who would take care of me if you got married again.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you tell him?""
"I said Grandma Rachel would always take care of me.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did he say?""
"He smiled and told me that adults had plans too.""
I stared at the road.
"Did you ever tell your father about that?""
"No. I thought it was a normal question.""
I swallowed.
"Thank you for telling me.""
Before ending the call, Maya asked, "Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Are you going to find out why Mom did this?""
I looked at Daniel.
"Yes, sweetheart. I am.""
When we arrived at the office, Dr. Hale was waiting outside.
He looked older than the photographs.
His hair had thinned.
His face was drawn.
But his eyes were restless.
He led us into a small consultation room and closed the door.
"I want to be clear," he began.
"I never intended for any of this to happen.""
Daniel placed a recorder on the table.
"Then tell us what happened.""
Dr. Hale sat down.
For several seconds, he stared at his hands.
Then he began.
"Celeste approached me during Rachel's final months. She said she was a family friend and wanted to understand Rachel's medical condition.""
I leaned forward.
"Why would she need that information?""
"She said she was concerned about you and Maya.""
I almost laughed.
"Concerned?""
He nodded.
"She asked how long Rachel was expected to live.""
The room went quiet.
I felt my hands tighten.
"Did you tell her?""
"I refused to discuss confidential medical information.""
"Then what?""
"She returned several days later. This time, she said Rachel had given her permission.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Did you verify that?""
"No.""
"Why?""
Dr. Hale looked ashamed.
"Because she brought a signed authorization form.""
I sat back.
"What did it authorize?""
"Access to certain medical records and information regarding estate planning.""
I stared at him.
"Medical records and estate planning?""
He nodded.
"She claimed Rachel wanted her to help prepare for the transition after her death.""
I shook my head.
"Rachel never authorized that.""
"I understand that now.""
Daniel opened his briefcase.
"Do you still have a copy of the form?""
Dr. Hale nodded.
He reached into a drawer and removed a folder.
Inside was a photocopy of the authorization.
I recognized the signature immediately.
It looked like Rachel's.
But the date was wrong.
The same date as the forged trust document.
I looked at Daniel.
He examined the page.
Then he turned toward the doctor.
"Did you witness this signature?""
"No.""
"Who did?""
"Celeste said it had been witnessed by a family employee.""
I looked at him.
"Margaret?""
Dr. Hale shook his head.
"No. The witness name was Vanessa Bennett.""
Daniel and I exchanged glances.
Another document.
Another false authorization.
I looked at the doctor.
"Why are you telling us this now?""
He lowered his eyes.
"Because Celeste contacted me yesterday. She said you had discovered the original recording. She wanted me to confirm that Rachel had been mentally unstable.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"She wanted you to lie?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"She said there would be money involved if I cooperated.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Do you have that conversation in writing?""
Dr. Hale nodded.
He removed his phone.
There were several messages.
The first was from Celeste.
We need to agree on what happened before Andre starts asking questions.
The second:
You told me Rachel was confused. Please don't change your story now.
The third:
If this becomes a legal matter, remember that you were the one who signed the original authorization.
I stared at the screen.
Then I looked at Dr. Hale.
"Did you sign it?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Knowing it wasn't genuine?""
He closed his eyes.
"I suspected.""
I stood.
"Then you helped her.""
He looked up.
"I did. And I'm prepared to testify.""
Daniel calmly placed the documents into his folder.
"We'll need a formal statement and the original records.""
Dr. Hale nodded.
"Of course.""
I looked toward the window.
I felt angry.
But beneath the anger was something worse.
Grief.
Rachel had been dying.
She had been fighting for every additional day with her daughter.
And while I was trying to be a husband and father, another woman had been asking how much time remained before she could gain access to the life Rachel had built.
"Why did Celeste want the information about Rachel's illness?"" I asked.
Dr. Hale hesitated.
"Because she wanted to know when the estate would become accessible.""
I looked back at him.
"Why?""
He took a breath.
"She was working with someone.""
Daniel stopped writing.
"Who?""
Dr. Hale looked directly at me.
"Your older brother.""
I felt the room tilt.
My brother, Marcus.
We had grown up together.
He had been my best man.
He had helped me through Rachel's funeral.
He had held Maya at the hospital when she was seven and couldn't stop crying.
I stared at the doctor.
"That's impossible.""
Dr. Hale shook his head.
"Marcus introduced Celeste to Rachel's charity circle.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Marcus knew Celeste before I did?""
"Yes.""
Daniel slowly closed his notebook.
"Do you have evidence?""
Dr. Hale opened another file.
He handed us a series of printed emails.
The first was dated almost two years before Rachel died.
It was between Marcus and Celeste.
Marcus: Rachel's trust is substantial. But Andre controls the household finances. You need to be patient.
Celeste: I'm not interested in waiting forever.
Marcus: Then get closer to him. He trusts people who show concern for his daughter.
I read the exchange again.
My hands went numb.
The next email was even worse.
Celeste: Rachel suspects something. She asked me why I keep asking about Maya's inheritance.
Marcus: Don't worry. Once she's gone, Andre will need someone. Make yourself indispensable.
I put the papers down.
For a moment, I couldn't see clearly.
My brother had helped introduce the woman who eventually became my wife.
He had watched me grieve.
He had watched me marry her.
And he had apparently known what she wanted all along.
Daniel touched my arm.
"Andre, breathe.""
I stepped away.
I needed air.
I walked outside and stood beside the car.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I stared at the screen.
Then I answered.
"Hello?""
"Andre! Finally. I've been trying to reach you.""
His voice sounded cheerful.
Too cheerful.
"What's going on?""
"Your wife called me. She says things have gotten out of control.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"Listen, brother. I think you need to calm down. You're letting grief and family drama cloud your judgment.""
I looked at the medical office.
"Did you know Celeste before I met her?""
There was a pause.
Then Marcus laughed.
"Of course. We moved in the same circles.""
"Did you introduce her to Rachel?""
Another pause.
"Yes. Why?""
"Did you know she was asking about Rachel's inheritance?""
His voice changed.
"Andre, where is this coming from?""
"Answer me.""
He sighed.
"Look, I was trying to help.""
"Help whom?""
"You.""
I almost laughed.
"By arranging my marriage?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Did you discuss Rachel's trust with Celeste?""
He was silent.
Then he said, "There were things you didn't understand about Rachel's finances.""
I felt something inside me turn cold.
"What things?""
"She was keeping money away from the family.""
"She was protecting her daughter.""
"Exactly! And that was the problem.""
I stared at the pavement.
Marcus continued.
"Rachel was obsessed with making sure Maya got everything. She didn't care about you. She didn't care about what would happen if you married again.""
I gripped the phone.
"She cared about her daughter.""
"And what about the rest of us?""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The resentment.
The greed.
The belief that Rachel's money should have been available to everyone.
"Did you receive money from Celeste?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Marcus?""
Finally, he said, "I received compensation for helping her understand the estate.""
My blood ran cold.
"How much?""
"That's none of your business.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're right. It's not my business. But Rachel's estate is.""
He lowered his voice.
"Andre, don't make this bigger than it needs to be.""
"How much did you receive?""
"Forty thousand.""
I stared at the phone.
Forty thousand dollars.
My brother had sold my trust for forty thousand dollars.
"Did you know about the forged documents?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you?""
His voice became defensive.
"I didn't forge anything!""
"Then what did you do?""
"I provided information.""
"What information?""
"About Rachel's accounts. Her property. The trust structure.""
I felt sick.
"You helped them.""
"I helped Celeste.""
I ended the call.
When I returned to the office, Daniel was waiting.
He had heard enough to understand.
"We need to preserve that call," he said.
I nodded.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph.
Marcus was standing beside Celeste.
They were outside a restaurant.
The date printed beneath the photograph was two weeks before my wedding.
There was a second photograph.
Marcus handing Celeste a small envelope.
And a third.
Celeste holding a document.
The message beneath the photographs read:
You deserve to know who introduced your wife to your family.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
There is a reason Marcus received forty thousand dollars.
I typed back.
Who is this?
The response came immediately.
Someone who worked at Rachel's hospital.
Then another message appeared.
Marcus wasn't the only person paid to keep Rachel's final wishes from being discovered.
I looked at Daniel.
He was reading the same message.
"Who else?"" I whispered.
A final photograph arrived.
It showed a bank transfer.
The recipient's name was Vanessa Bennett.
The amount was $75,000.
The transfer date was six months before Rachel died.
And in the reference field were three words.
*PROJECT MAYA GUARDIANSHIP.*
I stared at the screen.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it was Maya.
I answered immediately.
"Dad?""
"What's wrong, sweetheart?""
Her voice was trembling.
"Mom came into my room.""
I stood up.
"Are you okay?""
"She was looking for something.""
"What?""
"The envelope Grandma Rachel gave me.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she find it?""
Maya began crying.
"No.""
"Where is it?""
"I remembered something. I hid it somewhere else.""
"Where?""
She whispered.
"Inside the lining of my old teddy bear.""
I closed my eyes.
"Good. Don't touch it.""
Then Maya said something that made me go completely still.
"Dad, there's something else.""
"What?""
"Mom said she knows what Grandma Rachel wrote in the letter.""
I gripped the phone.
"How?""
"She said Grandma Rachel told her the truth before she died.""
I looked at Daniel.
Maya continued.
"She said Grandma Rachel wasn't planning to leave me the house.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Sweetheart, listen to me. Don't believe anything she says until we verify it.""
Maya's voice became smaller.
"She also said Grandma Rachel wasn't my biological grandmother.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
"What?""
Maya began sobbing.
"She said my real mother was someone else.""
I stared at the phone.
The room seemed to disappear.
Rachel had raised Maya.
Rachel had loved Maya.
Rachel had protected Maya.
And now Celeste was claiming that the woman who had given everything for my daughter wasn't even her biological mother.
Daniel looked at me.
He had heard every word.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Then I looked at the letter Rachel had left behind.
There was something I hadn't noticed before.
A final line, written at the bottom of the page.
Andre, there is one truth about Maya's birth that I never had the courage to tell you. But please remember this: biological connections do not determine who a mother is.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Daniel.
He whispered, "Andre, I think we need to find Maya's original birth records.""
And suddenly, I understood.
The final secret wasn't about the house.
May you like
It wasn't about the money.
It was about Maya herself.
