Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wanted My Daughter's Money

The resort was beautiful.
That was the first thing Maya noticed when we arrived.
White sand stretched along the shoreline. Palm trees moved gently in the warm breeze. The ocean looked almost unreal beneath the afternoon sunlight.
The lobby smelled of fresh flowers and expensive perfume.
A young employee approached us with cold towels and fruit drinks.
"Welcome to the Azure Palm Resort, Mr. Bennett. We have your reservation ready.""
I handed over my identification.
"Three guests.""
The receptionist smiled.
"Of course. Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett, and Master Devin Bennett?""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"No. Two children. Maya and Devin.""
The receptionist looked at her screen.
"Oh, I'm sorry. The original booking listed Mrs. Bennett.""
"That's correct. My wife is no longer traveling with us. My daughter is.""
The receptionist quickly adjusted the reservation.
"Of course, sir. We'll make sure everything is updated.""
Maya stood beside me, looking uncomfortable.
I turned toward her.
"Something wrong?""
She shook her head.
"It's just strange.""
"What is?""
"Being included.""
I couldn't speak for a moment.
Then I put my hand on her shoulder.
"Get used to it.""
She smiled faintly.
We had two adjoining rooms overlooking the ocean.
Maya chose the room with the balcony.
Devin immediately claimed the television.
I unpacked my clothes, placed my phone on the bedside table, and finally allowed myself to breathe.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered on the second ring.
"Have you arrived?""
"Yes.""
"Good. I spoke with the trust administrator.""
"What did they say?""
"The attempted transfer was submitted using an authorization form containing your digital signature. The administrator rejected it because the signature verification failed.""
"Who submitted it?""
"Celeste.""
I sat on the edge of the bed.
"How certain are you?""
"Her email address was attached to the submission. The device registration also matches a laptop previously used at your home.""
I closed my eyes.
"What was the money supposed to be used for?""
"According to the request, it was intended for an educational investment account.""
"Whose education?""
There was a pause.
"That's where things get interesting.""
I waited.
"The proposed beneficiary was Devin.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My son.
The boy who had just helped his sister carry her suitcase through the airport.
The boy who had looked terrified when he revealed what his mother had said.
I rubbed my forehead.
"Does Devin know?""
"I don't think so. The request was submitted without his involvement.""
I exhaled.
"Thank God.""
Daniel continued.
"Andre, I need you to understand something. The trust is protected. The money is still there. But the attempted transfer suggests that Celeste may have been planning this for some time.""
"What do you recommend?""
"Freeze any shared financial permissions, change your digital passwords, and arrange an independent review of the documents.""
"Anything else?""
"Don't confront her until we understand the full picture.""
I looked toward the balcony.
Maya was standing outside, watching the ocean.
"I think we're already past that point.""
Daniel sighed.
"Then at least don't make any financial decisions under pressure.""
We ended the call.
I stood by the balcony door.
Maya turned when she noticed me.
"Everything okay?""
I forced a smile.
"Everything's fine.""
She studied my face.
"Dad, you don't have to pretend.""
I walked outside.
The warm breeze moved through her hair.
I leaned against the railing.
"Your mother tried to access your inheritance.""
Maya went still.
"What?""
"Daniel found a request for a transfer.""
"How much?""
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
She stared at me.
"Why?""
"That's what I'm trying to understand.""
She looked down at the ocean.
"Was she going to take it?""
"The request was rejected.""
Maya nodded slowly.
Then she asked the question I had been dreading.
"Was that why she didn't want me to come?""
I didn't answer immediately.
She continued.
"Because if I stayed home, she could do things without me knowing?""
I reached for her hand.
"Maybe. We don't know everything yet.""
She pulled her hand away gently.
"I knew something was wrong.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
"Last month, she asked me to sign something.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she ask you to sign?""
"A school financial form.""
"What kind of form?""
"She said it was for the college savings account.""
I stared at her.
"Did you sign it?""
Maya shook her head.
"No.""
"Why not?""
She hesitated.
"Because it had my name on it, but the amount was different from what Grandma Rachel told me.""
I felt cold.
"What amount?""
"She said there was about two hundred thousand dollars in the trust. The form said I was authorizing a withdrawal of one hundred and eighty thousand.""
I gripped the railing.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Maya's eyes filled.
"Because Celeste said you had already agreed.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same lie.
The same manipulation.
She had been using my name to silence my daughter.
"What did you do with the form?""
"I left it in my bedroom.""
"Do you still have it?""
Maya nodded.
"I think so.""
"Can we look for it when we get home?""
"Okay.""
She turned back toward the water.
Then she spoke quietly.
"Do you think she ever wanted me here?""
I felt something break inside me.
I pulled her into my arms.
"I wanted you here. I always wanted you here.""
For a moment, she didn't move.
Then she wrapped her arms around me.
I held my daughter until her breathing settled.
That evening, we had dinner at the resort's outdoor restaurant.
Devin ordered a ridiculous amount of food.
Maya laughed when he tried to pronounce the name of a dessert and failed.
For a little while, they were just two children enjoying a vacation.
Not a family divided by money.
Not two children caught between adults.
Just brother and sister.
Then my phone rang.
Celeste.
I stared at the screen.
Maya noticed.
"You should answer.""
I hesitated.
"Are you sure?""
She nodded.
"I don't want her to say I stopped you from talking to her.""
I answered.
"What?""
Celeste's voice was sharp.
"Where is Devin?""
"Having dinner.""
"Put him on the phone.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to speak to my son.""
I looked toward the table.
Devin was laughing at something Maya had said.
"He's busy.""
"Andre, stop controlling access to my child.""
I almost laughed.
"Your child?""
"Don't start with me.""
"What do you want, Celeste?""
She lowered her voice.
"Vanessa told me you contacted Daniel.""
I glanced at Maya.
"Yes.""
"Why would you involve lawyers in a family matter?""
"Because someone tried to withdraw my daughter's inheritance using my signature.""
"That is not what happened.""
"Then what happened?""
"I was trying to reorganize the money for the children's future.""
"Which children?""
She went silent.
Then she said, "Both of them.""
"Your request listed Devin as the beneficiary.""
"Because Maya already has enough money!""
I stood up.
"Lower your voice.""
"I am not going to whisper while you accuse me of stealing!""
"I haven't accused you of anything. I've asked you a question.""
She began speaking faster.
"Andre, you know how expensive this household is. You know what I contribute. You know how much I have sacrificed for those children.""
I stared at the darkening ocean.
"What exactly have you sacrificed?""
"Everything!""
"Then why did you tell a travel agency to remove my daughter without informing me?""
"Because she ruins every family event!""
The words came out so quickly that I knew she had been holding them for a long time.
I looked through the restaurant window.
Maya was helping Devin cut his dessert.
"Explain that," I said.
Celeste scoffed.
"She makes everything difficult. She constantly reminds everyone that Rachel was her mother. She walks around this house as though she's the only person who has ever suffered.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"She's sixteen, Celeste.""
"And she's not the only child in this family!""
"No. She's just the one you decided to erase.""
Celeste went quiet.
Then her voice changed.
"Andre, you need to come home.""
"Why?""
"Because something has happened.""
I straightened.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa is here.""
I frowned.
"Why is Vanessa at our house?""
"She's helping me sort through some paperwork.""
"What paperwork?""
"Your daughter's trust documents.""
My blood ran cold.
"Don't touch anything belonging to Maya.""
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"You can't control everything, Andre.""
"Don't touch those documents.""
"You're going to regret humiliating me.""
I ended the call.
A moment later, my phone rang again.
This time, it was Daniel.
"Andre, I need you to listen carefully.""
"What happened?""
"The trust administrator received another request.""
I stood completely still.
"What kind of request?""
"A request to change the mailing address and designate a new authorized contact.""
"Who submitted it?""
"Vanessa.""
I looked toward the restaurant.
Maya was now watching me.
"Was it approved?""
"No. But there's something else.""
"What?""
"The administrator found a second document attached to the request. It's a copy of an old authorization form supposedly signed by Rachel before she died.""
I frowned.
"Rachel never signed anything like that.""
"That's what I thought.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Andre, the document gives Celeste permission to manage Maya's inheritance until she turns twenty-one.""
I stared at the ocean.
"That document is fake.""
"Possibly. But there's a bigger problem.""
"What?""
"The signature appears to have been witnessed by someone who was working at your house when Rachel died.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said a name.
"Your former housekeeper. Margaret Ellis.""
I closed my eyes.
Margaret had worked for us for almost eleven years.
She had been there when Rachel became ill.
She had helped care for Maya after the funeral.
And she had left our employment two years after Celeste moved in.
I had always believed she left because she wanted to retire.
"Where is she now?"" I asked.
"That's what I'm trying to establish.""
My phone vibrated again.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Mr. Bennett, my name is Margaret Ellis. I need to speak with you urgently about Rachel's final days. I know what Celeste did, and I have the original document.
I read the message twice.
Then another message appeared.
Please don't tell your wife I contacted you.
I looked toward Maya.
She was watching me from across the restaurant.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something stronger than anger.
Fear.
Because if Margaret was telling the truth, Celeste hadn't simply manipulated a vacation booking or attempted to steal money.
May you like
She might have forged a dying woman's signature.
And the woman who could prove it had just contacted me after two years of silence.
